Diethylstilbestrol-treated adult rats with altered epididymal sperm numbers and sperm motility parameters, but without alterations in sperm production and sperm morphology.

In this study, we characterized estrogenic effects of diethylstilbestrol (DES) on reproductive parameters in male rats to identify a minimal dose level that alters epididymal and sperm functions but has little or no effect on sperm production and/or spermatogenesis. Adult rats (five animals/group) received s.c. injections of 0.2 ml of corn oil containing DES at a rate of 1.0 mg, 200 microg, 40 microg, 8 microg, 1.6 microg, or 320 ng x rat(-1) x day(-1) for 12 days. The control group received corn oil only. DES effects were similar in the 8-microg group and higher dose groups and included signi

[Is laparoscopic treatment of adhesions a valid approach for postoperative abdominal pain?].

The role of post-operative adhesions in chronic abdominal pain remains controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the value of laparoscopic treatment of adhesions for chronic post-operative abdominal pain in 32 patients. Over a period of 8 years, 32 patients (25 women and 7 men) with a mean age of 41.5 years (18-69) were hospitalized for chronic abdominal pain of more than 6 months duration, without an obvious underlying neoplasm or psychiatric disorder. They had all undergone at least one previous abdominal operation (mean, 1.9; range, 1-5), with a mean follow-up of 28 months (6-82).

Vegan proteins may reduce risk of cancer, obesity, and cardiovascular disease by promoting increased glucagon activity.

Amino acids modulate the secretion of both insulin and glucagon; the composition of dietary protein therefore has the potential to influence the balance of glucagon and insulin activity. Soy protein, as well as many other vegan proteins, are higher in non-essential amino acids than most animal-derived food proteins, and as a result should preferentially favor glucagon production. Acting on hepatocytes, glucagon promotes (and insulin inhibits) cAMP-dependent mechanisms that down-regulate lipogenic enzymes and cholesterol synthesis, while up-regulating hepatic LDL receptors and production of the

Supportive treatment improves survival in multivisceral cholesterol crystal embolism.

Disseminated cholesterol crystal embolism (CCE) is a devastating complication of atherosclerosis that is often considered beyond therapeutic resources. We designed and implemented a treatment protocol based on an analysis of the main causes of death in disseminated CCE with renal involvement. From 1985 to 1996, we applied this protocol in 67 consecutive atherosclerotic patients admitted to our renal intensive care unit for acute renal failure (serum creatinine level, 6 +/- 2.5 mg/dL) accompanied by signs and symptoms of CCE. The other principal clinical features in these patients were cardiac

Disease-associated loss of erythrocyte complement receptors (CR1, C3b receptors) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and other diseases involving autoantibodies and/or complement activation.

Although surface membrane density of complement receptor type one (CR1) on erythrocytes (E) is probably an inherited trait among normal individuals, recent evidence from our laboratories suggests that the reduced number of CR1 per E observed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) results from acquired as well as genetic factors. In the present investigation, the number of CR1 per E was quantitated with 125I-monoclonal anti-CR1 and was found to vary inversely with disease activity in patients with SLE who were followed serially for as long as 14 mo. Although evidence for E surface-

Causal effects of antihypertensive drugs on thyroid diseases: A trans-ancestry drug-target Mendelian randomization study.

Thyroid disorders frequently coexist with cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, but whether long-term modulation of antihypertensive drug targets influences thyroid disease risk remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the associations of 7 antihypertensive drug-target classes with thyroid diseases in European and East Asian populations using a trans-ancestry drug-target Mendelian randomization (MR) framework. We performed a two-sample, trans-ancestry drug-target MR analysis of 7 antihypertensive target classes. Target-proximal single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with systolic

Neural Dynamics of Self-Control: Pre-Choice EEG Signals Predict Yielding to Temptation.

UNLABELLED: Self-control is the capacity to resist self-defeating behavior in favor of long-term goals. Such behavioral control is fundamental to adaptive human behavior, yet its neural mechanism remains unclear. A key limitation of prior research is that tasks often conflate self-control with cost-benefit evaluation, making it difficult to isolate self-control encoding. We introduced a novel dynamometer-based task where participants chose between high-effort, larger-later (L) and low-effort, smaller-sooner (S) rewards. In some trials, referred to as temptation trials, participants could maint

The Gatekeeper's Dilemma: Why Sustainable Functional/Dissociative Seizure Care Begins With Referral.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Functional neurologic disorders (FNDs) are highly prevalent across neurologic service lines, with functional/dissociative seizures (FDSs) being the most common FND symptom. Despite clear diagnostic criteria and evidence-based treatments, people with FDSs are frequently misdiagnosed, stigmatized, or routed through ineffective care. A key driver of these gaps is the referral process. This study evaluates referral patterns into an established ambulatory, multidisciplinary FDS program, identifies reasons for referral ineligibility, and proposes targeted interventions to

Inhibition of Jaw Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell Cuproptosis Attenuates Bone Loss in Apical Periodontitis via Suppressing the FoxO Signalling Pathway.

AIM: Apical periodontitis (AP) is an infectious disorder characterized by periapical inflammation and alveolar bone destruction. Recent evidence suggests that cuproptosis, a distinctive form of copper-regulated cell death, has been implicated in the regulation of bone loss. This study aimed to investigate the involvement of cuproptosis and its mechanism in modulating bone loss in AP. METHODOLOGY: Periapical specimens from healthy subjects or AP patients were collected to evaluate copper content and the expression level of cuproptosis-associated proteins. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq)

Comparative Evaluation of Salivary Inflammatory Cytokines and microRNA Biomarkers Across the Spectrum of Oral Carcinogenesis.

Background Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) represent precursor conditions that carry an elevated probability of progressing to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Despite ongoing research efforts, identifying dependable, non-invasive markers that can detect early molecular changes linked to malignant conversion continues to present a significant clinical obstacle. Objective To evaluate the diagnostic utility of salivary inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and IL-17) and microRNAs (miR-21, miR-138, and miR-184) in healthy individuals, patients with OPMDs, and patients with OSCC, and to

IRAK-M attenuates pain hypersensitivity and anxiety-like behaviors in a nitroglycerin-induced chronic migraine mouse model with concomitant reductions in microglial activation and neuroinflammation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic migraine (CM) is a disabling neurological disorder in which neuroinflammatory mechanisms and central sensitization are thought to contribute to disease pathophysiology. Interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase M (IRAK-M), which is predominantly expressed in microglia in the central nervous system (CNS), is an endogenous negative regulator of innate immune signaling. Previous studies have linked IRAK-M to the restraint of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling and NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome-related responses. However, the role of IRAK-M in CM-re

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Patients With Pathologically Confirmed Comorbid Alzheimer Disease and Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the clinical presentation in patients with comorbid Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) neuropathology, despite frequent comorbidity of neurodegenerative diseases on autopsy. In other neurodegenerative conditions, multiple pathologies alter the presentation of neuropsychiatric symptoms, complicating clinical care. We examined whether neuropsychiatric symptoms differ in patients with comorbid ADNC/FTLD compared with patients with each pathology alone. METHODS: This was a retrospective exam

Optimal dose window, formulation efficacy, and molecular mechanisms of curcumin in MASLD animal models: A systematic review and three-level meta-analysis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Approximately 25% of the global adult population is affected by metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), yet no universally approved first-line pharmacotherapy exists. Curcumin is the major bioactive constituent of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), a plant with a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for treating digestive, inflammatory, and liver disorders. Despite promising multi-targeted activity, the clinical application of curcumin is hindered by poor bioavailability and inconsistent efficacy due to variable dosing and form

Hierarchical-circular model of biological memory: a multilevel hypothesis for pathogenesis and allostatic integrity in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias remain largely resistant to disease-modifying therapies, despite decades of research focused on linear neuropathological pathways such as beta-amyloid and tau. Persistent paradoxes-including the dissociation between pathology burden and clinical expression, the impact of early-life stress, and the role of systemic factors-indicate the need for integrative theoretical frameworks. This article proposes a multilevel hypothesis conceptualizing dementias as disorders of biological memory and allostatic integrity rather than isolated brain path
