Biliary anastomosis using T-tube versus no T-tube for liver transplantation in adults.

RATIONALE: In liver transplantation, biliary reconstruction by performing bile duct anastomosis is a critical step of the operation. Biliary complications, especially fistula (leaks) and stenosis, remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. During the operation, surgeons can insert a T-tube into the bile duct following the bile duct reconstruction. This drain decompresses the biliary tract, and it is thought to reduce biliary tract-related complications. There is, however, no consensus on the use of a T-tube as a drainage technique during biliary reconstruction. OBJECTIVES: To asses

COVID-19 health data prediction: a critical evaluation of CNN-based approaches.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly accelerated the demand for accurate and efficient prediction models to support effective disease management, containment strategies, and informed decision-making. Predictive models capable of analyzing complex health data are essential for monitoring disease trends, evaluating risk factors, and optimizing resource allocation during the pandemic. Among various machine learning approaches, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as powerful tools due to their ability to process large volumes of high-dimensional health data, such as medical images

A comprehensive data level analysis for cancer diagnosis on imbalanced data.

The early diagnosis of cancer, as one of the major causes of death, is vital for cancerous patients. Diagnosing diseases in general and cancer in particular is a considerable application of data analysis for medical science. However, imbalanced data distribution and imbalanced quality of the majority and minority classes, which lead to misclassification, is a great challenge in this field. Though the samples of the majority class and their proper classification are more important to classifier, cancer is diagnosed by relying on the minority class samples (cancer data class). While the conseque

Mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on frontline healthcare workers in Ethiopia: a scoping review of associated mental health risk and protective factors.

OBJECTIVES: The mental health impacts of COVID-19 on frontline healthcare workers have been reported globally; however, there is limited evidence from low-income countries such as Ethiopia. We reviewed the literature to understand how COVID-19 impacted the mental health of frontline healthcare workers, including the associated risk and protective factors. DESIGN: A scoping review of peer-reviewed research was conducted between 2020-2025 to explore the mental health and well-being of frontline healthcare workers in Ethiopia during COVID-19. The process adhered to the guidelines for data extrac

Postnatal outcome of fetal cortical malformations: systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Parental counseling for fetal malformations of cortical development (MCD) is based on data from studies in children and adults undergoing imaging investigation for abnormal neurodevelopment. However, such postnatal findings may not be applicable to prenatally diagnosed cases. The aim of this study was to review the existing data on postnatal neurodevelopmental outcome for fetuses diagnosed with MCD. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science and EMBASE for articles published between 2013 and 2023, using standardized keywords to describe fetal cortical malf

Tools developed and disseminated by guideline producers to promote the uptake of their guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The uptake of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) is inconsistent, despite their potential to improve the quality of health care and patient outcomes. Some guideline producers have addressed this problem by developing tools to encourage faster adoption of new guidelines. This review focuses on the effectiveness of tools developed and disseminated by guideline producers to improve the uptake of their CPGs. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of implementation tools developed and disseminated by guideline producers, which accompany or follow the publication of a CPG, to promot

Gender differences in attitudes toward academic effort and boys' underachievement: A large-scale international study.

In most developed countries, boys underperform academically compared with girls. One possible explanation lies in boys' more negative attitudes toward school and learning. Using data from 750,000 15-year olds across 61 countries, we investigate gender gaps in attitudes toward academic effort, including students' beliefs about the importance of trying hard in school. Boys consistently report less positive attitudes than girls, regardless of socioeconomic status, family structure, or grade repetition. These gender gaps are observed in nearly all countries and are larger in more developed societi

The impact of genetic polymorphisms in xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes and the risk of oral cancer: a critical review.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) affect many individuals, where exposure to xenobiotics such as tobacco, alcohol, and betel quid is highly prevalent. Inter-individual variability plays a key role regarding genetic polymorphisms in xenobiotic‑metabolizing enzymes. In this study, we searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science (up to April 2026) for observational studies and meta‑analyses evaluating CYP1A1, CYP1B1, CYP2E1, GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1 and GSTM3 polymorphisms in OSCC and OPMDs. Twenty-one studies met the inclusion criteria. Data on exposur

Natural Remedies for Gut Health: The Role of Plant Extracts in Combating Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Colon Cancer.

Digestive disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer are among the most significant global health challenges, largely driven by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Over centuries, traditional medical systems have relied on medicinal plants to alleviate gastrointestinal conditions, and current pharmacological research is beginning to validate these ancestral practices. Many plants contain a rich diversity of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenes, and alkaloids, that exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects, maki

Seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus among refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced populations within Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV), an often overlooked public health concern, is highly prevalent among marginalized groups. Refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people (RASIDP) constitute an underserved population in healthcare. Given that displacement rates are increasing and that HCV is endemic to many African countries, we aimed to determine the prevalence of HCV among RASIDP communities in Africa. Studies investigating HCV prevalence within RASIDP communities across Africa were identified via the following database searches: Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, APA PsycINFO, and the
