Symptoms of balance disorders including 'unsteadiness', 'dizziness and vertigo' are common in the elderly and commonly found in general practice in medicine. There are many causes of balance disorders and vary from one person to another. Disorder of the internal ear or vestibular end-organ type is one cause. Unsteadiness of somato-sensory or proprioception is common in the elderly so is degenerative disorder of central control in brain. The elderly are prone to many chronic illnesses or disorders which are causes of balance disorder or give rise to more rapid degeneration of the central nervou

IMPORTANCE: Ototoxicity is an irreversible direct and late effect of certain childhood cancer treatments. Audiologic surveillance during therapy as part of the supportive care pathway enables early detection of hearing loss, decision-making about ongoing cancer treatment, and, when applicable, the timely use of audiologic interventions. Pediatric oncologic clinical practice and treatment trials have tended to be driven by tumor type and tumor-specific working groups. Internationally accepted standardized recommendations for monitoring hearing during treatment have not previously been agreed on

As long as gunpowder and explosives are used to solve disagreements between nations, ethnic groups, and individuals, victims of blast injury continue to arrive occasionally at trauma centers around the world. Bombs planted in crowded urban locations or suicide bombings continue to stress civilian EMS and urban medical systems. Although the clinical presentation depends on whether the blast occurs in open or confined quarters, open air, or water, the pattern of injury inflicted on the body is relatively consistent. The proximity to the detonating device is probably much more important than the

In recent years in the literature on stapes surgery several changes have been proposed concerning the adoption either of new technologies (Laser) or of surgical techniques preserving middle ear functional structures (stapedoplasty). The Authors carried out a personal case-report on 30 patients suffering from otospongiotic disease, in order to clarify the real advantages and possible applications of the latest developments in small fenestra stapedectomy. Twenty subjects underwent platinotomy with preservation of the stapedial tendon (stapedoplasty), while a simple stapedotomy was performed in t

BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a benign, usually slow-growing tumor. The drawback of radical microsurgical VS resection is the increased likelihood of neurologic injury, forcing surgeons to leave a tumor remnant in some cases. We evaluated the prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement patterns to determine the risk of tumor regrowth.
METHODS: This clinical study included 30 patients (20 women and 10 men) with VS who underwent surgery via a retrosigmoid transmeatal approach. The extent of resection was assessed by MRI 6 months after surgery. Two subtypes of in

AIM: We investigated if loop characteristics correlate with audio-vestibular symptoms or hemifacial spasm in patients with a vascular loop in the root entry zone (VII and VIII) and in the internal auditory canal.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter study analyzed 2622 consecutive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the cerebellopontine angle of patients with asymmetric audio-vestibular symptom or hemifacial spasm; patients' symptoms were confirmed by clinical tests. MRIs displaying vascular loops visible in the axial view were analyzed using multiplanar reconstruction. W

We report a case of a 57-year-old man with bilateral masses in the internal auditory canal. The peculiar findings at magnetic resonance imaging with tridimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence combined with clinical data provided new insights into understanding the pathophysiology of the hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of otic capsule-sparing (OCS) length for the prediction of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in patients with OCS temporal bone fracture.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with OCS temporal bone fracture were enrolled, and their temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT), audiogram, and medical records were reviewed. The TBCT measured the shortest length between the otic capsule and fracture line. This length was referred to as the OCS length and was used to predict SNHL. Ossicular dislocation and fracture were also evaluated. Pa

Meniere's Disease is commonly diagnosed using Electrocochleography (ECOG). EVestG is a variant of ECOG utilizing one or more patient tilts as stimuli in place of the ECOG's repeated tonal clicks. The dynamic measures averaged 'background-onAA' (onAA=acceleration phase of tilt) and background-onBB (onBB=deceleration phase of tilt) of excitatory (ipsilateral tilt) vestibular responses are compared for a small group of age matched Controls (n=18) and Meniere's Disease patients (n=11). Preliminary data provides for an apparent clearer demarcation between Controls and Meniere's patients. Meniere's
