It is now generally believed that elderly may have slightly higher dietary protein requirements than those of the young-middle-aged adults. We have previously conducted related studies by the indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) technique, but more research data are needed to revise the protein requirements of the elderly. The main objective was to reevaluate the dietary protein requirements of healthy Chinese adults (65-80 years) without sarcopenia by using the IAAO technique. Nine healthy adult men and seven healthy adult women participated in the study, with protein intakes ranging from 0·

Chronic Otitis Media (COM) with complications is a common clinical entity in Otorhinolaryngology, but advances in antibiotics and surgical techniques have reduced complication rates and mortality. Management warrants surgical disease clearance, the choice of surgical approach of which may vary. Endaural approach is a less commonly performed approach in view of its complexity and surgical expertise. This case report presents a 13-year-old female with COM-squamous active type with cerebellar abscess, managed with Lempert's endaural mastoidectomy. The patient presented with long-standing left sid

PURPOSE: Middle ear disease is increasingly being managed via transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES). A limitation of TEES is that it restricts the surgeon to single-handed dissection. One solution to this would be an endoscope holder to facilitate two-handed dissection. Current endoscope holders are stationary, and can cause potential damage from endoscope contact with the ossicles or ear canal if unintended head motion occurs from inadequate anesthetic. A dynamic device that could detect and react to patient motion would mitigate these concerns, but currently there is little formal charact

OBJECTIVES: Recently, the endoscope has been increasingly introduced for middle-ear surgery. To evaluate the postoperative outcomes of endoscopic ear surgery (EES) in pediatric patients, we did a qualitative analysis with a systematic review and quantitative analysis with meta-analysis of available literature.
METHODS: Studies reporting the comparative surgical outcomes of EES in pediatric patients were systematically reviewed by searching the MEDLINE, PubMed, and Embase databases from database inception through 2017. The selected articles included clinical studies conducted with at least 30

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection has attracted increasing attention in recent years; however, NTM otomastoiditis is extremely rare. Surgery combined with antibiotic therapy is the current mainstay of treatment; however, the reported duration of medication still varies. In this study, we aimed to analyze patients with NTM otomastoiditis and establish a more efficient treatment strategy.
METHODS: Medical records and temporal bone images of patients with NTM otomastoiditis were retrospectively analyzed. In addition, a comprehensive review of cases with NTM otomastoiditis i

AIM: This study aims to describe the microbiology of middle ear fluid (MEF) in a cohort of children vaccinated with Streptococcus pneumoniae conjugate vaccine (PCV7) having ventilation tube insertion. Nasopharyngeal (NP) carriage of otopathogens in these children is compared with children without history of otitis media.
METHODS: Between May and November 2011, MEF and NP samples from 325 children aged <3 years were collected in three major centres in New Zealand at the time of ventilation tube insertion. An age-matched non-otitis-prone comparison group of 137 children had NP samples taken. A

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous otitis media (TOM) is an exceptionally rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that was usually diagnosed only after long-standing ear discharge or profound hearing loss. This case reported a young man in whom deafness was the sentinel event leading to the discovery of pulmonary tuberculosis and molecular confirmation of concurrent TOM.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male presented with bilateral, progressive hearing loss that had been labeled "chronic suppurative otitis media" by local clinics. Persistent constitutional symptoms prompted chest imaging that revealed

A 72-year-old Caucasian woman from the Southwestern United States presented with chronic right ear pain, hearing loss, and progressive hoarseness. Prior treatments, including balloon sinuplasty and tympanostomy tube placement, failed to resolve her symptoms. Imaging revealed right mastoid opacification, while flexible laryngoscopy demonstrated erythematous and polypoid changes of the right larynx. Pathology from biopsies of both the middle ear and larynx revealed spherules consistent with Coccidioides infection. She was treated with systemic fluconazole and underwent tympanomastoidectomy with

BACKGROUND: Alternobaric facial palsy (AFP) is a rare peripheral facial nerve palsy resulting from transient neurapraxia when sudden ambient-pressure changes disrupt middle-ear equilibrium. Common precipitants include scuba diving, air travel, and altitude. AFP triggered by routine activities is exceedingly uncommon.
CASE REPORT: A healthy 27 year old man developed acute right facial paresis after a prolonged yawn, while in the car. He reported ear fullness, cheek and tongue numbness, and inability to close the right eye, without other neurological sympthoms. Examination revealed a right peri

INTRODUCTION: Brain tissue can herniate through skull base defects, resulting in a condition known as Meningoencephalocele; it is always a surgical disease with many approaches (transmastoid, middle cranial fossa, and combined approach).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old male presented with right ear otorrhea, hearing loss, tinnitus, and headache. His medical history included a cranioplasty with a titanium mesh for repairing a skull fracture after head trauma and two episodes of meningitis with hospitalization. Physical examination revealed ear deformity and a pulsatile mass. Imaging studies c

BACKGROUND: The aim of this article is to report on the integration of endoscopic ear surgery (EES) into daily clinical practice.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a monocentric prospective study, the endoscopy unit was set up during even weeks over a period of 10 months and the procedure was primarily started endoscopically via a transmeatal approach. In odd weeks, the endoscopy was omitted. A total of 60 procedures in 59 patients were evaluated. Points of comparison were intraoperative vision, incision-suture time, postoperative hearing outcome, and postoperative otoscopic findings.
RESULTS: With t

Eustachian tube dilation (ETD) is an established, minimally invasive therapeutic approach for chronic eustachian tube dysfunction. The complications associated with performing a ETD are rare. A 22-year-old female patient presented with chronic otitis media on the right side and chronic obstructive tube dilation disorder on both sides. A type I tympanoplasty was performed on the right side because of a tympanic membrane perforation after a ETD on both sides without apparent complications. On the 5th postoperative day, she presented with headache, dizziness and hearing loss on the right side. Th

Auditory ossicles in the middle ear and bony labyrinth of the inner ear are highly mineralized in adult mammals. Cellular mechanisms underlying formation of dense bone during development are unknown. Here, we found that osteoblast-like cells synthesizing highly mineralized hearing-related bones produce both type I and type II collagens as the bone matrix, while conventional osteoblasts and chondrocytes primarily produce type I and type II collagens, respectively. Furthermore, these osteoblast-like cells were not labeled in a "conventional osteoblast"-specific green fluorescent protein (GFP) mo

Blunt trauma of the head can result in temporal bone fracture. Different classifications exist, but from a functional perspective, to distinguish otic capsule sparing and otic capsule disrupting fractures is superior to the classic nomenclature. Disruption of the otic capsule is often associated with sensorineural hearing loss, vestibular dysfunction, cerebrospinal leakage, or even intracranial consequences. Pneumolabyrinth describes the condition when air is enclosed within the inner ear. It is a result of a pathological communication between the labyrinth and the middle ear spaces that often

Based on high-resolution computed tomography, we describe in detail the petrosal and inner ear anatomy of one of the few known African stem paenungulates (Paenungulatomorpha), Ocepeia daouiensis from the Selandian of the Ouled Abdoun phosphate basin (Morocco). The petrosal of Ocepeia displays some remarkable, probably derived features (among eutherians) such as relatively small pars cochlearis, pars canalicularis labyrinth (including small semicircular canals), a large wing-like pars mastoidea, a large and inflated tegmen tympani, and the dorsoventral orientation of the large canal for the ram

BACKGROUND: Aberrant internal carotid artery (aICA) is an anatomic anomaly whereby the internal carotid artery courses through the tympanic cavity without separation by bone. Because aICA is rare, there are no definite treatment strategies for aICA and its complications.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of aICA accompanied by pseudoaneurysm formation and massive bleeding. The patient was a 31-year-old woman with a 2-year history of hearing loss, ear fullness, and pulsatile tinnitus in her left ear. After a diagnosis of otitis media with effusion, she underwent a myringotomy and massive arte

Otology & neurotology : official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society [and] European Academy of Otology and Neurotology2013eng
OBJECTIVE: Implanting active middle ear implants (AMEI) at the round window has become a standard procedure to restore hearing for patients with moderate inner ear or mixed hearing loss. The round window (RW)-Coupler was developed as an alternative coupling aid to fit smaller RW diameters and require less drilling in the RW niche. The question arises whether using the RW-Coupler is useful and a safe procedure compared with the nonuse of the RW-Coupler
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine German-speaking patients were implanted with either a RW-Coupler attached to an AMEI floating mass transducer
