Time from Admission to the Onset of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia in a Single Acute Care Hospital in Japan.

The spread of antimicrobial resistant organisms (AROs) poses a major threat to animal and human health. In Japan, the estimated disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) due to ARO infections is 137.9 per 100,000 persons, with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) being the main contributor. Factors that can contribute to DALYs in Japan include younger age and a higher number of deaths in patients with MRSA bacteremia. Moreover, longer hospital stays may contribute to the higher rates of MRSA bacteremia in Japan than in western countries. We reviewed the diagnostic procedure combinat

COVID-19 and its aftermath, new drivers of infertility?

Law 40/2004, the Italian piece of legislation governing access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART), is relatively young, compared to the number of years that have passed since the first attempts at ART in the world. Still, such a law has undergone several revisions in recent years, mostly by court rulings, and such changes are indeed necessary in light of the constant evolution in ART innovations. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic struck on a global scale, disrupting virtually all aspects of social and economic life. COVID-19's impact on fertility has to do, although it is not limited to, th

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in water buffaloes and cats in Guangxi, China.

Toxoplasma gondii is a pathogen that poses a serious threat to human health and causes significant economic losses to the global livestock industry. The prevalence of toxoplasmosis infection has been reported to be high in humans and animals around the world, but the occurrence of the disease has not yet been reported in water buffaloes in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China. To understand the overall seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in Guangxi, a total of 1041 water buffalo and 114 cat serum samples were examined using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA).

Prescription opioids and economic hardship in France.

This paper studies how opioid analgesic sales are empirically related to socioeconomic disparities in France, with a focus on poverty. This analysis is made possible using the OpenHealth database, which provides retail sales data for opioid analgesics available on the French market. We exploit firm-level data for each of the 94 departments in Metropolitan France between 2008 and 2017. We show that increases in the poverty rate are associated with increases in sales: a one percentage point increase in poverty is associated with approximately a 5% increase in mild opioid sales. Our analysis furt

Environmental Pollution and the Risk of Developing Metabolic Disorders: Obesity and Diabetes.

To meet the increased need for food and energy because of the economic shift brought about by the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, there has been an increase in persistent organic pollutants (POPs), atmospheric emissions and metals in the environment. Several studies have reported a relationship between these pollutants and obesity, and diabetes (type 1, type 2 and gestational). All of the major pollutants are considered to be endocrine disruptors because of their interactions with various transcription factors, receptors and tissues that result in alterations of metabolic function.

Mapping the Landscape of Equitable Access to Advanced Neurotechnologies in Canada.

Geographic, social, political, and economic factors shape access to advanced neurotechnologies, yet little previous research has explored the barriers, enablers, and areas of opportunity for equitable and meaningful access for diverse patient communities across Canada. We applied a mixed-mode approach involving semi-structured interviews and rating scale questions to consult with 24 medical experts who are involved in the care of patients who undergo functional neurosurgery targeting the brain. Seven major themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: Health care system, Neurotechnology featur

Coexistence and clinical implications of anemia and depression in the elderly population.

Anemia and depression are common in the elderly and they are important medical, social and economic problems for the world. Both disorders are associated with a lower quality of life, multimorbidity and a higher risk of death. The connections between anemia and depression have been reported, but the mechanism and clinical consequences of their co-existence are not fully understood. Several links can be found between anemia and depression in the elderly: common etiological factors, low socioeconomic status of patients, poor education and less physical activity. Both conditions are associated wi

Sero-epidemiological study of zoonotic bacterial abortifacient agents in small ruminants.

Abortion is one of the leading causes of economic losses in the livestock industry worldwide. Chlamydia abortus, Coxiella burnetii, and Brucella spp. are the leading cause of late fetal loss in small ruminants. This study determined the seroprevalence of these agents in small ruminants in district Jhang. A total of 385 serum samples were taken from the sheep and goats from different flocks with a history of abortion and subjected to i-ELISA. Further, samples were analysed for liver enzymes and total serum protein using a semi-automated chemistry analyzer. The result of indirect commercial ELIS

Do vaginal microbicides reduce the risk of HIV acquisition in women?

Currently, no single HIV prevention method meets the needs of all people at risk of infection and a range of options are needed for individuals to protect themselves and to curb the HIV epidemic. Many people living with HIV or at risk for HIV infection in low and middle-income countries do not have access to prevention, treatment and care, and there is still no cure. Despite large preventive efforts, HIV acquisition rates remain unacceptably high and transmission mainly occurs through heterosexual intercourse, where women are significantly more vulnerable to infection than men. Widespread viol

The Association Between Alzheimer's Disease and Epilepsy: A Narrative Review.

Several studies have established the two-way relationship between the sporadic and familial forms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and epilepsy. However, a more robust connection exists between epilepsy and early onset familial AD (EOFAD). Still, the mechanisms underlying the same are not yet fully understood. Aging is also known to be associated with both AD and seizures. Seizures of any type can occur at any stage of AD and are six to 10 times more likely in patients with AD than in controls of a similar age group. Seizures can quicken cognitive decline and increase mortality, amplifying the medi

Evolution of manual small-incision cataract surgery from 8 mm to 2 mm - A comprehensive review.

Cataract is the most common cause of reversible blindness worldwide, accounting for approximately 50% of blindness worldwide. Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed in routine ophthalmic practice. It has undergone tremendous evolution, and the incision size has progressively reduced from 10-12 mm in extracapsular cataract surgery (ECCE) to 6-8 mm for manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS) and 2.2-2.8 mm in phacoemulsification. In a developing country like India, with a massive backlog of cataract, everyone cannot afford private surgery like phacoemulsification

Why They Stayed and Why They Left-A Case Study from Ellicott City, MD after Flash Flooding.

Ellicott City, MD was devasted by flash flooding in 2016 and 2018. A lack of qualitative research has been conducted on topics related to sense of place and flash flooding, especially in the United States. In this study, we reveal reasons why some who experienced flash flooding continued to stay the flood zone and why some leave. We utilized a phenomenological approach to answer these research questions. Data were generated through in-depth interviews with 19 participants from the Historic District and adjacent neighborhoods in Ellicott City. The most common reasons participants stayed were: (

Prevention of Anthracycline-Induced Cardiotoxicity: The Good and Bad of Current and Alternative Therapies.

Doxorubicin (Dox)-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC) remains a serious health burden, especially in developing countries. Unfortunately, the high cost of current preventative strategies has marginalized numerous cancer patients because of socio-economic factors. In addition, the efficacy of these strategies, without reducing the chemotherapeutic properties of Dox, is frequently questioned. These limitations have widened the gap and necessity for alternative medicines, like flavonoids, to be investigated. However, new therapeutics may also present their own shortcomings, ruling out the idea of "natur

Identification of biomarkers for bull fertility using functional genomics.

Prediction of bull fertility is critical for the sustainability of both dairy and beef cattle production. Even though bulls produce ample amounts of sperm with normal parameters, some bulls may still suffer from subpar fertility. This causes major economic losses in the cattle industry because using artificial insemination, semen from one single bull can be used to inseminate hundreds of thousands of cows. Although there are several traditional methods to estimate bull fertility, such methods are not sufficient to explain and accurately predict the subfertility of individual bulls. Since ferti

Green synthesis, characterization and applications of iron and zinc nanoparticles by probiotics.

The synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) by microorganisms is one of the most promising areas of research in modern nanotechnology since microorganisms can easily act as real nanofactories of industrially relevant compounds. Recent studies suggest that probiotic bacteria have an intrinsic potential to synthesize metal NPs when grown in the presence of metal ions. In such conditions, they can reduce metal ions through different biochemical mechanisms occurring both intra and extracellularly, and leading to the production of NPs. Different approaches have proposed the synthesis of silver, gold, tita
