Intestinal co-infection by Cyclospora sp. and Cryptosporidium parvum: first report in an AIDS patient.

Cyclospora is recently described new human pathogenic coccidian causing intermittent diarrhoeal enteritis which may persist for weeks or months in immunocompetent subjects, particularly travellers visiting some tropical areas and countries, such as Nepal, the Caribbean, Peru and Mexico. More rarely this enteric pathogen affects immunocompromised humans, namely HIV-infected people or AIDS patients, with some clinical pictures recognized in normal hosts. We describe the first case of Cyclospora sp. and Cryptosporidium parvum associated diarrhoeal enteritis in an adult AIDS patient.

Continuous intra arterial vasopressin infusion for control of typhoid hemorrhage.

A 35 year old man presented with massive lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to typhoid enteritis. After confirming the site of bleeding on a selective superior mesenteric angiogram, a vasopressin infusion was given at the rate of 0.2-0.4 units/min initially, followed by tapering doses over 36 hours. Cessation of bleeding was achieved immediately. The patients did not have any complications due to the procedure. Continuous vasopressin infusion is an effective method for the treatment of uncontrolled bleeding from typhoid enteritis.

Acute intestinal obstruction.

Nine hundred and four children with intestinal obstruction were studied. Necrotising enteritis was the commonest cause of intestinal obstruction in children. Acute intussusception was the second commonest cause in the whole group and the commonest cause in children under 1 year of age. Less common causes included band obstruction, sub acute intestinal obstruction and remnants of vitello-intestinal duct. A steady and significant improvement in the results of treatment was noted in children suffering from necrotising enteritis in the study period.

[Acute cardiorespiratory insufficiency due to electric injury: invasive hemodynamic study].

Case report on right branch block, acute pulmonary oedema and enteritis caused by electric shock in a boy. The invasive hemodynamic study showed primary pulmonary hypertension, cardiogenic shock, and acute respiratory failure. The outcome was good, with total and progressive recovery of all lesions. The literature review revealed the rarity of pulmonary oedema and enteritis after an electric shock. The invasive haemodynamic data suggest physiopathological explanations for findings in the case and indicate therapeutic measures for similar situations.

Systemic necrotizing polyarteritis in three weaned lambs from one flock.

Systemic necrotizing polyarteritis was diagnosed in three 7-11-mo-old lambs from the same flock. Aneurysmal dilation and rupture of the gastroduodenal artery in 1 lamb resulted in fatal hemorrhage. All lambs had severe necrotizing vasculitis involving the small intestine, abomasum, mesentery, kidney, and heart with concurrent lymphocytic enteritis. Immunohistochemistry for T- and B-lymphocytes and macrophages found a T-cell- and macrophage-dominant transmural vascular infiltrate and T-cell-associated enteritis. PCR analysis for pestivirus failed to identify infection in 1 lamb, and more extens

Relationship of Campylobacter toxigenicity in vitro to the development of postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome.

Campylobacter enteritis is associated with a significant risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome, but the mechanism is unknown. This study ascertained bowel symptoms in 93 patients 3 months after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis infection. The infecting organisms were cultured, and the effects of culture supernatants on toxin-sensitive epithelial cell monolayers (HEp-2, Green monkey kidney epithelial [Vero], and CHO-K1) were investigated. In all, 50, 43, and 41 of the isolates showed toxigenic effects on HEp-2, CHO-K1, and Vero cells, respectively. Persistently changed bowel habit was report

Cryptosporidium infections in children in Durban. Seasonal variation, age distribution and disease status.

One hundred and eleven of 1,229 children (9%) aged less than 10 years admitted to King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, with gastro-enteritis over a period of 1 year were found to harbour Cryptosporidium. Of these, 96 (89.7%) were less than 2 years of age. Cryptosporidium was the only potential pathogen identified in 80 of these patients (6.5%). The prevalence in paediatric patients without gastro-enteritis was 2.4% (3/124). During the study period Cryptosporidium infections were significantly more prevalent during the high rainfall season (P = 0.03).

[Mixed coli-rotavirus and Cryptosporidium infection in newborn piglets].

Complex morphologic, parasitologic, virologic, and bacteriologic studies on pigs and fecal samples from pigs were carried out on a farm where an enteritis infection in newborn pigs was recorded. A mixed coli-rotavirus and cryptosporidium infection was established in 10--20-day-old pigs of the Camborough hybrid with a clinically manifested enteritis syndrome. Morphologically, the cryptosporidium component of the infection substantiated atrophic and dystrophic changes in the intestinal epithelium. Developmental forms of the parasite were also found in the border wall of the enterocytes.

Rabbit dysentery: 3. Diagnostic differentiation.

The diagnostic differentiation of rabbit mucoid enteritis from rabbit dysentery by age and post mortem findings is described. The condition termed as "rabbit dysentery" affects three- to 10-week-old growing rabbits and is essentially an acute coccidiosis, while "mucoid enteritis" develops in older rabbits as a sequel to constipation for six to eight days. The main differentiating feature of the two conditions, which have often been confused with one another owing to similarity of symptoms, is the characteristics dissimilarity of gross changes in the caecum.

Abdominal tuberculosis may masquerade many diseases.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intestinal tuberculosis needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis when patients with intestinal pathology are encountered. Tuberculosis can mimic other disease entities like, ischemic enteritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, malignancies, intussusception etc., clinically as well as morphologically in resected intestinal specimens. We aimed to study the various clinical presentations leading to intestinal resection, with identification of different etiological factors by histopathological examination; and to illustrate, discuss and describe the various histopathologica

Virulence for chickens of Clostridium perfringens isolated from poultry and other sources.

Clostridium perfringens type A is the most common cause of poultry necrotic enteritis (NE). Of the four "major" toxins, type A strains produce only alpha toxin (CPA), which has long been considered a major factor in pathogenesis of NE. We investigated the virulence for poultry of type A strains from a variety of enteric sources. Newly-hatched CornishxRock chicks were fed a low protein diet for one week, a high protein diet for a second week, and then challenged with log-phase cultures of C. perfringens, mixed 3:4 (v/v) with high protein feed. A case of HCC successfully treated with infliximab-steroid sequential therapy for small bowel perforation due to atezolizumab/bevacizumab combination therapy.

BACKGROUND: Although reports of gastrointestinal perforation after immune-related adverse events (irAE) enteritis are rare, the anti- vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) effect of bevacizumab may be involved in gastrointestinal perforation. We report a rare case of gastrointestinal perforation in a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma treated with atezolizumab/bevacizumab combination therapy and infliximab before steroid use. Gastric acid secretion in Basenji dogs with immunoproliferative enteropathy.

Gastric acid secretion was studied in 13 Basenji dogs with immunoproliferative enteropathy. Considerable variation in the severity of gastritis and enteritis existed among dogs. Basenji dogs were categorized into two groups on the basis of postmortem gastric and intestinal histology (group I, gastritis and enteritis; group II, only enteritis). Pentagastrin-induced gastric acid secretory capacity was increased (P less than 0.002) in group II dogs as compared to healthy Beagle controls. Gastric acid secretory capacity of Basenji dogs with gastritis and enteritis (group I) was not different from

A rare cause of multiple small bowel ulcers and strictures in a 10-year-old child.

Enteritis and small bowel ulcers can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, drug-induced enteritis, cytomegalovirus, tuberculosis, or intestinal lymphoma. Cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis (CMUSE) is an uncommon idiopathic cause of ulceration and stricture of the small bowel. CMUSE can occur in adults, but only few pediatric cases have been reported. Inflammatory bowel disease and other causes should be carefully sought first before the diagnosis of CMUSE can be made. Previous reports demonstrated that surgical intervention may be necessary for both diagnostic and therapeut

Incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome among patients with Campylobacter infection: a general practice research database study.

The association between Campylobacter infection and subsequent Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been well documented. To date, however, there exists no direct estimate of the incidence of GBS among patients with Campylobacter infection. Using the General Practice Research Database, we estimate the incidence of GBS in a cohort of patients presenting with Campylobacter enteritis to be 1.17/1000 person-years, a rate 77 times greater than that in the general population. The probability that an individual who develops Campylobacter enteritis will also develop GBS during the subsequent 2-month peri

Peritonitis in patients over the age of 50 years: 98 cases managed surgically.

Generalized peritonitis in patients over the age of 50 years is a common surgical emergency. This is a retrospective analysis of 98 cases managed surgically. Duodenal ulcer perforations, necrotizing enteritis, acute cholecystitis with perforation and small bowel perforations were the common causes. Most of them presented late, and many had associated conditions. Re-look laparotomies had a definite role to play. While there is significant decrease in the number of typhoid and tubercular peritonitis, there appears to be an increase in the incidence of necrotizing enteritis and acute cholecystiti

Follow-up studies in 50 totally colectomised children.

We report on 50 totally colectomised children, most of whom suffered from Hirschsprung's disease. Of the 50, one child died postoperatively of enteritis. On an average, the children were re-examined 5 1/2 years after the colectomy. The findings were as follows: With the exception of four, the size and weight of the patients were within the norm; 20 passed frequent stools of pulpy consistency; 16 suffered from disturbances of continence; 14 developed severe, partially recurrent enteritis. We did not find any advantage of a single method of operation, e.g. Martin's operation.

The VirS/VirR two-component system regulates the anaerobic cytotoxicity, intestinal pathogenicity, and enterotoxemic lethality of Clostridium perfringens type C isolate CN3685.

Clostridium perfringens vegetative cells cause both histotoxic infections (e.g., gas gangrene) and diseases originating in the intestines (e.g., hemorrhagic necrotizing enteritis or lethal enterotoxemia). Despite their medical and veterinary importance, the molecular pathogenicity of C. perfringens vegetative cells causing diseases of intestinal origin remains poorly understood. However, C. perfringens beta toxin (CPB) was recently shown to be important when vegetative cells of C. perfringens type C strain CN3685 induce hemorrhagic necrotizing enteritis and lethal enterotoxemia. Additionally,
