Comorbidity of hospital-treated psychiatric and physical disorders with special reference to schizophrenia: a 28 year follow-up of the 1966 northern Finland general population birth cohort.

We studied the comorbidity of psychiatric and physical disorders in a sample (n = 11,017) from the unselected, general population, Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort. During the period 1982-1994, hospital-treated psychiatric patients were more likely than people without psychiatric diagnoses to have been treated for physical disease in hospital wards, 298 out of 387 (77%) vs 6687 out of 10,630 (62.9%) (OR = 2.0, 95% CI = 1.6-2.5). Injuries, poisonings and indefinite symptoms were a more common reason for hospital treatment in people with schizophrenia or other psychiatric disorder as compared

[Fracture of macroporous hydroxyapatite prosthesis].

Different prosthesis implants are offered to perform a cranioplasty after a decompressive craniectomy when autologous bone graft cannot be used. The authors report the case of a 25-year-old man who benefited a unilateral decompressive craniectomy after a severe head trauma. Seven months later, a cranioplasty using custom macroporous hydroxyapatite prosthesis was performed. The postoperative course was marked by a generalized seizure leading to a traumatic head injury. The CT-scan showed a comminutive fracture of the prosthesis and an extradural hematoma. The patient underwent a removal of the

Electroencephalographic, neuroradiologic, and neurodevelopmental studies in infants with subclavian steal during ECMO.

Color Doppler imaging revealed a subclavian steal--retrograde flow in the right vertebral artery which shunted blood from the brain's posterior circulation to the right arm via the subclavian artery--in 17 of 54 infants (31%) during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO); right vertebral artery flow returned to antegrade after ECMO and removal of the right common carotid arterial cannula. When subjects with and without a subclavian steal were compared, there were no statistically significant differences in mortality; in the results of neonatal electroencephalograms, cranial ultrasound stud

Pyridoxine-dependent seizures: magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings.

Pyridoxine-dependent seizures are an extremely rare genetic disorder. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for the prevention of permanent brain damage. Elevated levels of glutamate and decreased levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the frontal and parietal cortices are among the characteristic features of this disorder. These metabolic abnormalities eventually lead to seizures and neuronal loss. In this case report, we present magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings of a 9-year-old girl with pyridoxine-dependent seizures with mental retardation. The N-acetylaspartate-to-creatin

Antiseizure medications consumption in 73 countries and regions from 2012 to 2022: a longitudinal trend study.

BACKGROUND: International trends in antiseizure medication use across countries from different geographical regions and income levels remain underexplored. Valproic acid (valproate) use has raised concerns due to its teratogenic risks, with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines recommending lamotrigine or levetiracetam as first-line therapy for epilepsy in women and girls of childbearing potential, advising against valproate use in this population. This study aimed to assess multinational trends in antiseizure medication (ASM) consumption from 2012 to 2022 in the context of evolving polic

A comparative study of impairment of quality of life in children with skin disease and children with other chronic childhood diseases.

BACKGROUND: Chronic disease can have physical and psychological effects which affect social functioning. These effects can be better understood from the perspective of parent and child by the use of health-related quality of life (HRQL) measures. Various HRQL measures are now available, of which generic health measures have been the most widely used. These permit comparison between different diseases and also the normal population. OBJECTIVES: To cross-validate a new generic HRQL proxy measure for children, the Children's Life Quality Index (CLQI), with an established speciality-specific derm

Decoding voltage-gated sodium channels structure: Molecular mechanisms linking architecture, function, and disease.

Voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels are critical transmembrane proteins responsible for the initiation and propagation of electrical signals in excitable tissues. They consist of a large α subunit and auxiliary β subunits. Together, the voltage sensing, ion selectivity, and rapid gating transitions regulate neuronal, muscular, and cardiac excitability. Recent cryo-electron microscopy breakthroughs have transformed the understanding of NaV structure-function relationships, revealing the asymmetric organization of voltage-sensing domains (VSD), the architecture of the DEKA selectivity filter, th

From Bio-Interface Materials to Neural Integration: The Next-Generation Brain-Machine Interfaces Powered by Hydrogels.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs), which serve as revolutionary tools for neural recording, modulation, and rehabilitation, are highly dependent on the biocompatibility and mechanical suitability of their electrode materials. Although traditional metal electrodes possess excellent conductivity, their inherent rigidity causes a substantial mechanical mismatch with soft neural tissue, leading to chronic inflammatory responses and poor long-term stability. The emergence of hydrogel electrodes has provided a breakthrough solution to this fundamental limitation. Hydrogels, characterized by their soft

MLC1 alteration in human iPSCs give rise to disease-like cellular vacuolation phenotype in the astrocyte lineage.

BACKGROUND: Megalencephalic Leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC), a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disorder involving the white matter, is not adequately recapitulated by current disease models. Somatic cell reprogramming, along with advancements in genome engineering, will allow the establishment of in-vitro human models of MLC for disease modeling and drug screening. In this study, we utilized cellular reprogramming and gene-editing techniques to develop induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) models of MLC to recapitulate the cellular context of the classical MLC-impacted n

Activin A in the central nervous system: Mechanistic and therapeutic insights unveiled by emerging technologies.

Activin A exhibits both protective and pathological roles in the central nervous system, reflecting a functional duality that complicates its therapeutic development. To decipher the underlying mechanisms responsible for these contradictions, we leverage emerging technologies that establish comprehensive cellular and spatiotemporal contexts for its signaling pathway. These approaches elucidate the mechanisms underlying central nervous system diseases and their potential therapeutic applications. In this review, we demonstrate how these advanced technologies enhance our understanding of the mec

Neuromotor maturation and cognitive performance in children with self-limited focal epilepsies of childhood: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Self-limited focal epilepsies of childhood (SeLFE) are traditionally considered to have a favorable prognosis. However, emerging evidence suggests that some patients may exhibit cognitive and developmental differences, particularly during the active phase of the disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate cognitive performance and neuromotor maturation in children with SeLFE and to explore potential associations between these domains. METHODS: Thirty children aged 6-12 years diagnosed with SeLFE and 30 healthy controls with comparable age distribution were included. Cognitiv

Diagnostic value of stand-alone videos after inconclusive inpatient EEG-video monitoring.

Inpatient electroencephalographic (EEG)-video monitoring occasionally fails to capture the events in question, leaving patients without a definitive diagnosis. Management after an inconclusive admission is generally limited to repeating monitoring or empirical adjustment of antiseizure medications. Although stand-alone videos are increasingly used in clinical practice, their diagnostic value in this setting has not been well established. We aimed to assess the diagnostic contribution, submission rate, and interrater reliability of stand-alone videos obtained after inconclusive inpatient EEG-vi

Soft sonocapacitor with topologically integrated piezodielectric nanospheres enables wireless epidural closed-loop neuromodulation.

Capacitively coupled electrical stimulation modulates neuronal activity through reversible charging and without charge transfer reactions. This represents a promising and safe neuromodulation scheme but achieving wireless and high capacitive charge density injection remains challenging. Here, we developed a topological fibrous-architecture sonocapacitor (SonoCap) that assembled from piezoelectric-dielectric composite nanosphere (UCapT) and two-dimensional cellulose. UCapT features a unique piezoelectric core-hollow cavity-dielectric cage structure that can efficiently couples ultrasound excita

Pseudo-healthy image synthesis via location-guided diffusion models for focal cortical dysplasia lesion localization.

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a developmental disorder frequently linked to drug-resistant focal epilepsy, where surgical intervention is often the most promising treatment. Unfortunately, conventional neuroradiological methods often struggle to detect subtle FCD cases, which may result in missed surgical opportunities for patients. To address this challenge, we have developed an innovative approach to FCD lesions detection using conditional diffusion models guided by complementary location-based modal factors. Our method involves employing a classifier to identify epileptic sites while di

Selected Molecular Targets for Counteracting Epileptogenesis: What Do We Know About Its Effective Inhibition?

Epilptogenesis is a long-term process that involves the transformation of a healthy brain into a seizure-producing brain. Since approximately 30% of epilepsy patients suffer from drug-resistant seizures, the concept of inhibiting the epileptogenesis process and thus preventing seizures has emerged. The search for effective methods of inhibiting epileptogenesis is possible thanks to animal models, which include kindled seizures; models based on the induction of status epilepticus resulting in subsequent spontaneous recurrent seizures, or brain trauma; and genetic models. Blood-brain barrier dys

One world, one goal: Advocacy and policy for a unified Parkinson's response.

Parkinson's disease is one of the fastest growing neurological disorders with regards to disability and death. Though this burden is felt globally, inequities in research, advocacy, prioritization and funding mean that the needs of people with Parkinson's disease in low- and middle-income countries, and from marginalized communities in high-income countries, remain poorly recognized. Parkinson's disease is increasingly being acknowledged as a global public health issue requiring a public health response. Global advocacy efforts, awareness-raising initiatives, research collaborations, partnersh
