Does beta(3)-adrenoreceptor blockade attenuate acute exercise-induced reductions in leptin mRNA?

We investigated the effect of a single bout of exercise on leptin mRNA levels in rat white adipose tissue. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to an exercise or control group. Acute exercise was performed on a rodent treadmill and was carried out to exhaustion, lasting an average of 85.5 +/- 1.5 min. At the end of exercise, soleus muscle and liver glycogen were reduced by 88% (P < 0.001). Acutely exercised animals had lower (P < 0.05) leptin mRNA levels in retroperitoneal but not epididymal fat, and this was independent of fat pad weight. To test the hypothesis that beta(3)-adrener

Oral branched-chain amino acids do not improve exercise capacity in McArdle disease.

To determine whether oral branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) improve exercise capacity, six fasting patients with McArdle's disease were given a solution of BCAA (77 mg/kg) or a control noncaloric beverage 30 minutes before exercise. The BCAA meal tripled plasma BCAA levels, increased BCAA catabolism as indicated by greater exercise increases in plasma glutamine and alanine, but lowered mean peak free fatty acid levels and reduced exercise capacity in five of six patients. Lower work capacity may be attributed to a net reduction in muscle fuel availability after BCAA administration.

Lung diffusing capacity and exercise in subjects with previous high altitude pulmonary oedema.

Subjects with a history of high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) have increased pulmonary artery pressure and more ventilation-perfusion (V'A/Q') inhomogeneity with hypoxia and exercise. We used noninvasive methods to determine whether there are differences in the pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL,CO) and cardiac output (Q') during exercise, indicative of a more restricted pulmonary vascular bed in subjects with a history of HAPE. Eight subjects with radiographically documented HAPE and five controls with good altitude tolerance had standard pulmonary function testing and we

Increased workload enhances force output during pedaling exercise in persons with poststroke hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A principle of poststroke rehabilitation is that effort should be avoided since it leads to increased spasticity and produces widespread associated abnormal reactions. Although weakness also contributes to movement dysfunction after a stroke, it has been feared that heightened activity levels during strength training will further exacerbate the abnormal tone imbalance present in spastic hemiplegia. The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis by quantifying the effects of increased workload on motor performance during different speeds of pedaling exercise in pe

Physical training improves exercise capacity in patients with mitral stenosis after balloon valvuloplasty.

BACKGROUND: Haemodynamic measurements taken at rest and during exercise showed that percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy results in both acute and long-term improvement. However, the time lag before there is an increase in exercise and in peak oxygen uptake appears to be delayed and irregular. PATIENTS AND METHODS: To assess the potential of physical training to restore better physical capacity after percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy, 26 patients with mitral stenosis were studied after the procedure. The group was split into two. Thirteen underwent a 3-month rehabilitat

Inspiratory muscle mechanics of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease during incremental exercise.

Inspiratory muscles are weak and contribute to exercise limitation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Differential inspiratory pressure contributions from the diaphragm and inspiratory rib cage muscles (RCMs) during exercise in patients with COPD patients are insufficiently described. We measured, in 16 patients with COPD, the global inspiratory muscle pressure (delta Pmus) and transdiaphragmatic pressure (delta Pdi) during an incremental bicycle exercise to exhaustion. The pressures needed to overcome the elastic load were further partitioned into portions for overcoming the PEE

Short-term effects of bracing on exercise performance in mild idiopathic thoracic scoliosis.

In adolescent idiopathic thoracic scoliosis (ITS) working capacity may be reduced during exercise. Despite concern about its usefulness, bracing is still being used in ITS. Thus the effects of bracing on exercise performance need to be examined. We studied six females, ages 12-15 years who had mild ITS (Cobb angle range 20-35 degrees). Pulmonary volumes, maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV), breathing pattern, the lowest (most negative in sign) pleural pressure during sniff maneuver (Pplsn), and pleural pressure swings (Pplsw) were measured first. Then, Pplsw, O2 uptake (VO2), CO2 output (VCO2)

Regulation of ram scrotal temperature during heat exposure, cold exposure, fever and exercise.

1. We measured body core and scrotal temperatures (Tbody and Tscrotum, respectively) of rams during 5 h of hot (40 degrees C) and cold (6 degrees C) exposure, for 6 h following intravenous injections of saline (0.9% NaCl) or 0.4 micrograms kg-1 of the purified lipopolysaccharide endotoxin of Salmonella typhosa (LPS), during 40 min of treadmill exercise, and for several days in their pens. 2. At 20-23 degrees C ambient temperature there were significant, but out of phase, circadian variations in Tbody and Tscrotum. Tscrotum was 3.30 +/- 0.03 degrees C lower than Tbody on average. 3. Dynamics of respiratory gas exchange during exercise after correction of congenital heart disease.

In pediatric exercise testing, conventional measures of aerobic exercise function such as maximal O2 uptake or the ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) use only one value for the assessment of exercise capacity. We studied a more comprehensive approach to evaluate aerobic exercise function by analyzing the steepness of the slope of CO2 production (VCO2) vs. VO2 above the VAT (S3). This was calculated in 32 patients operated on for congenital heart disease [16 for transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and 16 for tetralogy of Fallot (TF)] and was compared with 16 age-matched controls (nl).

Forehead skin temperature and thermal sensation during exercise in cool and thermoneutral environments.

BACKGROUND: The influence of forehead and mean skin temperature on thermal sensation during exercise in hot, cool, and thermoneutral environments is unclear. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that forehead temperature, in contrast to other skin sites, would contribute significantly to thermal sensation during exercise in hot, cool, and thermoneutral environments. METHOD: Volunteer males (N = 14) performed 30 min of constant load exercise on a cycle ergometer during which thermal sensation, skin and rectal temperatures, and heart rate were collected. Each subject participated in a control (24 degre

Pressure support reduces inspiratory effort and dyspnea during exercise in chronic airflow obstruction.

Exercise training has been of limited success in patients with severe chronic airflow obstruction (CAO), in part because of the reduced ventilatory capacity and excessive dyspnea experienced. Pressure support (PS) is a new form of mechanical ventilation which can effectively assist ventilation when applied noninvasively to patients in acute respiratory failure. It was hypothesized that PS might also be used to improve exercise performance, and ultimately physical conditioning, in ambulatory patients with CAO undergoing exercise training. To begin to address this concept, the objectives of the

Exhaustive treadmill exercise does not reduce twitch transdiaphragmatic pressure in patients with COPD.

Reduced diaphragm contractility has been described in normal subjects after whole body endurance exercise, and it indicates low frequency fatigue (LFF); it is unknown whether LFF is of clinical importance. We therefore studied the effect of treadmill exercise to exhaustion on diaphragm contractility in six patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (mean FEV1, 0.71, 27% predicted). The subjects first performed a short (control), treadmill walk and then, after resting, a second walk to a state of severe dyspnea. Cervical magnetic stimulation of the phrenic nerve roots was

Intermittent pneumatic compression effect on eccentric exercise-induced swelling, stiffness, and strength loss.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to determine if intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) affects muscle swelling, stiffness, and strength loss resulting from eccentric exercise-induced injury of the elbow flexors. We hypothesized that the compression would decrease swelling and stiffness. DESIGN: Repeated measures design with a before-after trial comparison within each day. SETTING: Conducted at a university Somatic Dysfunction Laboratory. SUBJECTS: Twenty-two college women students were studied. They had not been lifting weights or otherwise participating in regular arm exercise for the 6 month

Frusemide attenuates the exercise-induced rise in pulmonary capillary blood pressure in horses.

Catheter mounted micro-tip-manometers (the signals from which were matched with fluid-filled pressure signals from same cardiovascular sites and zeroed at the point of the shoulder), were used to study pulmonary haemodynamics in 8 healthy sound horses at rest and during exercise performed at 8, 10, 12 and 14 m/s on a treadmill. Measurements were made without frusemide (control) and 4 h after iv administration of 250 mg frusemide. Post-frusemide data were also obtained on a separate day, and these observations were not significantly different from those made on the same day as controls. Pre-fru

Very long-chain acyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency presenting with exercise-induced myoglobinuria.

A young man presented with recurrent episodes of muscle pain and myoglobinuria after prolonged exercise or fasting. Studies on isolated muscle mitochondria showed slow flux through beta-oxidation and the presence of only saturated long-chain acyl coenzyme A (acyl-CoA) esters. These results strongly suggested a defect in the dehydrogenation of long-chain acyl-CoA esters that we confirmed by measurement of enzyme activity in muscle and platelet mitochondrial fractions and fibroblast homogenates. In all tissues studied from the patient, the enzyme activity was approximately 10% of control values

Effect of acute sodium bicarbonate ingestion on excess CO2 output during incremental exercise.

The effect of bicarbonate ingestion on total excess volume of CO2 output (CO2 excess), due to bicarbonate buffering of lactic acid in exercise, was studied in eight healthy male volunteers during incremental exercise on a cycle ergometer performed after ingestion (0.3 g.kg-1 body mass) of CaCO3 (control) and NaHCO3 (alkalosis). The resting arterialized venous blood pH (P < 0.05) and bicarbonate concentration ([HCO3-]b; P < 0.01) were significantly higher in acute metabolic alkalosis [AMA; pH, 7.44 (SD 0.03); [HCO3-]b, 29.4 (SD 1.5) mmol.l-1] than in the control [pH, 7.39 (SD 0.03); [HCO3-]b, 2

Prognostic value of exercise radionuclide angiography in low risk acute myocardial infarction survivors.

Patients with an uneventful course during hospital stay, which represent from 30 to 50% of all myocardial infarction survivors, still have an incidence of new coronary events up to 7% during the first year of follow-up. To assess the value of radionuclide angiography in predicting new coronary events in this low risk population, 93 patients without evidence of left ventricular failure or recurrent postinfarction angina underwent rest and exercise radionuclide angiography and treadmill exercise testing before hospital discharge. During follow-up (16 +/- 5 months, range 12 to 32) 14 patients dev

Intrinsic risk factors for exercise-related injuries among male and female army trainees.

Physical training-related injuries are common among army recruits and other vigorously active populations, but little is known about their causation. To identify intrinsic risk factors, we prospectively measured 391 army trainees. For 8 weeks of basic training, 124 men and 186 women (79.3%) were studied. They answered questionnaires on past activities and sports participation, and were measured for height, weight, and body fat percentage; 71% of the subjects took an initial army physical training test. Women had a significantly higher incidence of time-loss injuries than men, 44.6% compared wi
