Concentration-effect relationships with FM 24: a new long acting beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist.

1 FM 24, 1-(2-exo-bicyclo[2,2,1] hept-2-tl phenoxy-3[(1-methyl/ethyl) amino]-2-propanol is a new β-adrenoceptor antagonist. The drug-receptor complex dissociates very slowly in vitro, probably because of the rigidity of the norbornyl ring (Le Fur et al., 1978). 2 Five healthy male volunteers were given single oral doses of placebo, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 mg of FM 24. Two hours later a sub-maximal exercise test was carried out with measurement of heart rate and blood pressure and a blood sample was taken for measurement of the plasma concentration of FM 24. Progressive inhibition of exercise t

Metformin Blunts Vascular Insulin Sensitivity After Exercise Training in Adults at Risk for Metabolic Syndrome.

CONTEXT: Metformin is the first-line pharmacotherapy for treating hyperglycemia, and it lowers cardiovascular disease risk. Prior work suggests that metformin can, however, interfere with metabolic adaptations to exercise. To date, no work has tested if metformin (Met) alters exercise training mediated vascular insulin sensitivity, and whether this is exercise intensity dependent. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to test the hypothesis that Met blunts vascular insulin sensitivity in an intensity-based manner among adults at risk for metabolic syndrome. METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-controlle

Effects of Adding Whole-Body Vibration to Routine Exercise Therapy on Pain, Disability, Muscle Strength, and Endurance in Individuals With Chronic Nonspecific Neck Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic nonspecific neck pain (CNNP) is highly prevalent, and exercise therapy is regarded as an effective intervention. Whole-body vibration (WBV) may enhance neuromuscular activation and potentially improve muscle strength and endurance; however, evidence on its application in individuals with neck pain remains limited. This study aimed to compare the additive effects of WBV combined with exercise therapy versus exercise therapy alone on pain, disability, cervical muscle strength, and endurance in individuals with CNNP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this single-blinded

Acute effects of passive heat exposure on vascular function and exercise capacity in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Vascular dysfunction and exercise intolerance contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related cardiovascular disease. Passive heat exposure provides a physiological stimulus for beneficial vascular adaptations and improvements in exercise capacity but has not yet been investigated in CKD. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the physiological response to an acute bout of passive heat exposure in patients with CKD. In this randomized, crossover trial, 10 participants with Stage G2-G4 CKD were enrolled (means ± SE; age, 41 ± 4 yr; 6 females; estimated glomerular filtration rate, 55

Impact of personlized exercise prescription on muscle mass, physical function, and quality of life in postoperative pancreatic cancer patients undergoing da Vinci robotic surgery: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is characterized by a 5-year survival rate of less than 12%, primarily because of challenges in early diagnosis, which has resulted in a generally poor prognosis for patients. With ongoing advancements in diagnostic and surgical technologies, there is an increasing focus on enhancing the postoperative quality of life for individuals with pancreatic cancer. Although existing research suggests that exercise interventions are safe for this patient population, definitive evidence regarding their efficacy remains insufficient. Consequently, this study aims to conduct a

Acute whole-body vibration as a recovery strategy did not alter the content of gluteus medius monocarboxylate-transporters, lactatemia, and acidosis induced by intense exercise in horses.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have explored alternatives to enhance the performance, health, and safety of sports horses. One promising method involves the use of vibrating platforms (VP), which offer passive exercise stimulation via mechanical oscillations distributed throughout the body. This type of exercise is referred to as whole-body vibration (WBV) and is an emerging strategy for accelerating muscle recovery. This study examined the dynamics of proteins responsible for transporting monocarboxylates (MCT1 and MCT4), and their relationship with lactatemia and acid-base balance in connecti

Risk of eating disorders among university students and its association with dieting, weight control behavior and non-substance addictions.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) most often develop during adolescence and young adulthood. Therefore, university is deemed a period of risk due to increased academic demands and uncertainty about the future. Despite the high prevalence of ED among young adults, there is limited evidence regarding their association with non-substance behavioral addictions-such as mobile phone use and exercise addiction-in Mediterranean university populations. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of risk for ED and its association with risk factors among university undergraduate students. The associati

Exercise stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging is feasible in adolescents and young adults with anomalous coronary arteries.

AIMS: Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) can result in sudden cardiac death in the young and risk stratification is challenging. Though dobutamine stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance (DS-CMR) is feasible in pediatric patients, exercise stress CMR (ES-CMR) may have lower rates of adverse events, higher diagnostic accuracy, and the ability to better reflect the physiologic changes occurring with exercise. We aimed to describe our institution's experience with ES-CMR using supine bicycle ergometry in pediatric and young adult patients with AAOCA. METHODS AND RESULTS: We re

Enhancing metabolic and inflammatory status in insulin-resistant rats: Acute intervention with cocoa flavanols and submaximal aerobic exercise activates intracellular signaling pathways for glucose metabolism.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes, characterized by hyperglycemia, is closely linked to obesity and low-grade inflammation. Acute cocoa flavanols (CF) intake has demonstrated benefits in vasoreactivity, cognitive functions, and antioxidant enzyme activity. However, the physiological mechanisms of CF concerning glucose uptake, inflammatory mediators, and their interplay with aerobic exercise remain unclear in populations with metabolic diseases. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the acute effects of CF, alone or combined with acute aerobic exercise on mechanisms involved in glucose uptake

A Comparative Evaluation of the Effects of N95 and Surgical Facemasks on Pregnant Women Performing Moderate-Intensity Exercise: A Prospective Randomized Study.

Background and objective A facemask is often indicated for the control of the spread of airborne pathogens. At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was mass enforcement of mask use across the globe. Pregnant women were not excluded. While several studies have been conducted to evaluate and compare the efficacy of various mask types, data on their effects on pregnant women during exercise are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of N95 and surgical facemasks on the cardiopulmonary functions of pregnant women during moderate-intensity exercise. Methods

High-intensity non-invasive ventilation during exercise-training versus without in people with very severe COPD and chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using nocturnal non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure (CHRF) experience reduced exercise capacity and severe dyspnoea during exercise training (ET). The use of NIV during ET can personalise training during pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) but whether high-intensity NIV (HI-NIV) during exercise is accepted and improves outcomes in these extremely physically limited patients is unknown. The aim of this trial was to determine if ET with HI-NIV during PR was more effective than withou

Structural and functional impairments of skeletal muscle in patients with postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Following acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a substantial proportion of patients showed symptoms and sequelae for several months, namely the postacute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) syndrome. Major phenomena are exercise intolerance, muscle weakness, and fatigue. We aimed to investigate the physiopathology of exercise intolerance in patients with PASC syndrome by structural and functional analyses of skeletal muscle. At least 3 mo after infection, nonhospitalized patients with PASC (n = 11, age: 54 ± 11 yr; PASC) and patients without long-term symptoms (n = 12, age: 49 ± 9 yr; CTRL) visi

Accelerometer-based prediction of ground reaction force in head-out water exercise with different exercise intensity countermovement jump.

BACKGROUND: Water jumping exercise is an alternative method to achieve maintenance of bone health and reduce exercise injuries. Clarifying the ground reaction force (GRF) of moderate and high cardiopulmonary exercise intensities for jumping movements can help quantify the impact force during different exercise intensities. Accelerometers have been explored for measuring skeletal mechanical loading by estimating the GRFs. Predictive regression equations for GRF using ACC on land have already been developed and performed outside laboratory settings, whereas a predictive regression equation for G

The development of a theory and evidence-based intervention to aid implementation of exercise into the prostate cancer care pathway with a focus on healthcare professional behaviour, the STAMINA trial.

BACKGROUND: Twice-weekly supervised aerobic and resistance exercise for 12 weeks reduces fatigue and improves quality of life in men on Androgen Deprivation Therapy for prostate cancer. Despite the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) proposing this as standard of care, it does not routinely take place in practice. Healthcare professionals are in a prime position to deliver and integrate these recommendations. A change in the behaviour of clinical teams is therefore required. In this paper, we describe the development of a training package for healthcare professionals using

Assessment of Exercise Stroke Volume and Its Prediction From Oxygen Pulse in Paralympic Athletes With Locomotor Impairments: Cardiac Long-Term Adaptations Are Possible.

The determinants of cardiac output (CO) during exercise, i.e., stroke volume (SV) and heart rate (HR), could differ in Paralympic athletes (PAthl) with spinal cord injury (SCI) with respect to PAthl with locomotor impairments caused by different health conditions (HCs). The purposes of the present study were the comparisons of two groups of PAthl, one with SCI and the other with either amputation (AMP) or post poliomyelitis syndrome (PM), assessing the (1) peak cardiorespiratory responses and determinants (SV and HR) of CO during maximal and submaximal arm cranking exercise (ACE), respectively

Effect of acute dietary nitrate supplementation on sympathetic vasoconstriction at rest and during exercise.

Dietary nitrate ( NO3- ) supplementation has been shown to reduce resting blood pressure. However, the mechanism responsible for the reduction in blood pressure has not been identified. Dietary NO3- supplementation may increase nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, and NO has been shown to inhibit sympathetic vasoconstriction in resting and contracting skeletal muscle. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that acute dietary NO3- supplementation would attenuate sympathetic vasoconstrictor responsiveness at rest and during exercise. In a double-blind randomized cro

Limb Perfusion During Exercise Assessed by Contrast Ultrasound Varies According to Symptom Severity in Patients with Peripheral Artery Disease.

BACKGROUND: In patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), the severity of symptoms correlates poorly with ankle-brachial index (ABI). The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that limb perfusion assessed using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEU) during contractile exercise varies according to functional class in patients with PAD, particularly those with ABIs in the 0.4 to 0.6 range whose symptoms vary widely. METHODS: Bilateral quantitative CEU perfusion imaging of the calf was performed in normal control subjects (n = 10) and patients with PAD who had at least one limb with a mod

MAP Training My Brain™: Meditation Plus Aerobic Exercise Lessens Trauma of Sexual Violence More Than Either Activity Alone.

Sexual violence against women often leads to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental illness characterized by intrusive thoughts and memories about the traumatic event (Shors and Millon, 2016). These mental processes are obviously generated by the brain but often felt in the body. MAP Training My Brain™ is a novel clinical intervention that combines mental training of the brain with physical training of the body (Curlik and Shors, 2013; Shors et al., 2014). Each training session begins with 20-min of sitting meditation, followed by 10-min of slow-walking meditation, and ending with 30-

Test-Retest Reliability of a Neuromuscular-Cognitive Assessment Battery, Without and With a Rucksack.

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel operate in chaotic and time-dependent environments; however, they are not assessed for readiness or return to duty under those constraints. Physical performance declines when integrated with cognitive challenges. Assessing this integrated performance (i.e., neuromuscular-cognitive) is vital to understanding how an individual may respond to uncertainty. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of 3 neuromuscular-cognitive assessments, both with and without a rucksack. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study employed a test-ret
