The effect of successful treatment on the emotional and physiological response to carbon dioxide inhalation in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have shown that patients with panic disorder are more likely to have panic attacks during carbon dioxide inhalation than are normal comparison subjects. Some studies have shown that antipanic medications can reduce the anxiogenic response to carbon dioxide, but none have shown if this is the case for cognitive behavioral therapy or if successful treatment reduces the respiratory physiologic response to carbon dioxide. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with panic disorder and 13 normal comparison subjects underwent baseline testing with 5% and 7% carbon dioxide inha

God's curse and hysteria: women's narratives of AIDS in Manokwari, West Papua.

This article describes the ways in which women in the coastal Papuan (Indonesian) town of Manokwari understand and represent HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Having employed focus group interviewing and other qualitative research methods during long-term fieldwork conducted in Manokwari, I argue that my subjects frame ideas about disease aetiology less in biomedical terms and more through a Christian worldview. AIDS is understood to be a fatal 'disease' (not disease syndrome) that is sent ultimately from God but that was recently brought to Pap

Social engagement and attachment: a phylogenetic perspective.

This article focuses on the importance of social engagement and the behavioral and neurophysiological mechanisms that allow individuals to reduce psychological and physical distance. A model of social engagement derived from the Polyvagal Theory is presented. The model emphasizes phylogeny as an organizing principle and includes the following points: (1) there are well-defined neural circuits to support social engagement behaviors and the defensive strategies of fight, flight, and freeze; (2) these neural circuits form a phylogenetically organized hierarchy; (3) without being dependent on cons

Investigating the pathogenesis of posttraumatic stress disorder with neuroimaging.

Rapidly evolving brain neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) are proving fruitful in exploring the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Structural abnormalities in PTSD found with MRI include nonspecific white matter lesions and decreased hippocampal volume. These abnormalities may reflect pretrauma vulnerability to develop PTSD, or they may be a consequence of traumatic exposure, PTSD, and/or PTSD sequelae. Functional neuroimaging symptom provocation and cognitive activation paradigms using

Neurohypophysial responses to emotional stress after deafferentation of sino-aortic baroreceptors in rats.

In an attempt to test the possibility that sino-aortic baroreceptors may mediate the previously reported stress response in hypothalamic magnocellular neurosecretory cell activity in rats, effects of deafferentation of sino-aortic baroreceptors on plasma levels of vasopressin and oxytocin after fear-related emotional stress were studied in male rats 28-33 days after the surgery. An alpha 1-adrenergic receptor agonist, phenylephrine (1 mg/kg) injected i.p. under anesthesia increased arterial blood pressure in the rats that had received surgical operation of sino-aortic denervation (SAD) and in

Exploring the Male Perspectives Regarding the Need for Postpartum Contraception in Their Female Partners: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Husbands in India.

Background Postpartum contraception is vital for maternal and neonatal health. In India, male partners play a decisive role in reproductive choices, yet their perspectives on postpartum contraception remain underexplored. Understanding men's knowledge, beliefs, fears, attitudes, and practices is crucial for improving contraceptive uptake and promoting shared decision-making in family planning. We aimed to design a study to explore Indian men's perspectives regarding postpartum contraception. Materials and methods A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted over one year at a ter

Associations between peripheral inflammatory markers and amygdala activity and connectivity in response to emotional faces in adolescents.

Research in adults suggests that higher peripheral inflammation is associated with increased threat-related amygdala activity and reduced cortico-amygdala connectivity. However, there is limited research in adolescents, which is striking given the major developmental changes that occur in cortico-amygdala circuitry during adolescence. In this study, we examine the association between peripheral inflammation and amygdala activity and connectivity to emotional faces in a community sample of adolescents. Participants included 88 adolescents 12 to 15 years old who provided a blood sample and under

Perioperative Propranolol Against Dental Anxiety: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Promising results from a trauma reactivation study on post-traumatic stress disorder suggest that propranolol is capable of attenuating symptoms of traumatically induced mental disorders by blocking memory reconsolidation. METHODS: A randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled, quadruple-blind trial was designed to determine the effectiveness of perioperative propranolol during exposure to dental extractions in reducing dental anxiety in patients with dental anxiety or dental phobia. Between November 2014 and December 2018, 52 patients with high levels of fear in anticipation of dent

Disparate access to breast cancer screening and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Barriers to breast cancer screening remain despite Medicaid expansion for preventive screening tests and implementation of patient navigation programs under the Affordable Care Act. Women from underserved communities experience disproportionately low rates of screening mammography. This study compares barriers to breast cancer screening among women at an inner-city safety-net center (City) and those at a suburban county medical center (County). Inner city and suburban county medical centers' initiatives were studied to compare outcomes of breast cancer screening and factors that in

Psychological Violence Against Arab Women in the Context of Social Media: Web-Based Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media provides women with varying platforms to express themselves, show their talents, communicate and expand their social relationships, and break the shackles imposed by their societies. Theoretically, social media can play a significant role in developing women's freedom and decreasing social pressures; nonetheless, women continue to face violence during the social media era mainly in the form of psychological violence. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct an empirical in-depth analysis of how the digital space, particularly social media, provides men with new opportuni

An Internet-based treatment for Flying Phobia using 360° images: Study protocol for a feasibility pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Flying Phobia (FP) is a prevalent disorder that can cause serious interference in a person's life. ICBT interventions have already shown their efficacy in several studies, but studies in the field of specific phobias are still scarce. Moreover, few studies have investigated the feasibility of using different types of images in exposure scenarios in ICBTs and no studies have been carried out on the role of sense of presence and reality judgement. The aim of the present study is to explore the feasibility of an ICBT for FP (NO-FEAR Airlines) using two types of images with different l

Fentanyl behind bars: The implications of synthetic opiates for prisoners and correctional officers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fentanyl and derivatives are lethal components of North America's opioid crisis. Prisons often house a disproportionate number of illicit opiate users. To date, no on-the-ground empirical research exists on how opioids are altering the health and risk profile of prisons. The objectives of this study were to examine (1) how fentanyl and its analogues have shaped the prison experience for prisoners; and (2) how these opioids have altered the occupation of correctional officers (CO's). METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 587 adult prisoners and 131 COs acro

Effect of Threat on Right dlPFC Activity during Behavioral Pattern Separation.

It has long been established that individuals with anxiety disorders tend to overgeneralize attributes of fearful stimuli to nonfearful stimuli, but there is little mechanistic understanding of the neural system that supports overgeneralization. To address this gap in our knowledge, this study examined effect of experimentally induced anxiety in humans on generalization using the behavioral pattern separation (BPS) paradigm. Healthy subjects of both sexes encoded and retrieved novel objects during periods of safety and threat of unpredictable shocks while we recorded brain activity with fMRI.

Gender effects in alcohol dependence: an fMRI pilot study examining affective processing.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol dependence (AD) has global effects on brain structure and function, including frontolimbic regions regulating affective processing. Preliminary evidence suggests alcohol blunts limbic response to negative affective stimuli and increases activation to positive affective stimuli. Subtle gender differences are also evident during affective processing. METHODS: Fourteen abstinent AD individuals (8 F, 6 M) and 14 healthy controls (9 F, 5 M), ages 23 to 60, were included in this facial affective processing functional magnetic resonance imaging pilot study. Local perceptions of cholera and anticipated vaccine acceptance in Katanga province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: In regions where access to clean water and the provision of a sanitary infrastructure has not been sustainable, cholera continues to pose an important public health burden. Although oral cholera vaccines (OCV) are effective means to complement classical cholera control efforts, still relatively little is known about their acceptability in targeted communities. Clarification of vaccine acceptability prior to the introduction of a new vaccine provides important information for future policy and planning. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study in Katanga province, Democratic Republic of

"Subutex is safe": perceptions of risk in using illicit drugs during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The dominant biomedical discourse stresses the physiological risks to the foetus or newborn posed by the prenatal use of illicit drugs. There is also a strong moral incentive for pregnant women to abstain from drugs. Yet few researchers have explored how pregnant, drug-using women themselves perceive the risks involved. The present paper investigates the reasoning by women about risks involved in prenatal drug use. Theoretically, a socio-cultural approach to risk is taken. METHODS: The paper is based on fourteen ethnographic interviews with women who had used illicit drugs during

[Why do not all smokers stop smoking?].

In spite of knowing the dangers of smoking, most smokers do not stop smoking timely before the development of smoking-related disease. The reasons why they do not consider stopping are multiple. The expectations and fears of the smokers must be known to the family doctor so that he or she can offer an individualized counseling.
