Feasibility and safety of Stanford A aortic dissection complete endovascular repair system in a porcine model.

BACKGROUND: Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a catastrophic disease with high morbidity and mortality. Although open surgery is still the gold standard for the treatment of ATAAD, some patients, with advanced age and multiple comorbidities, can only receive medical management alone. Nowadays, thoracic aortic endovascular repair (TEVAR) provides a potential treatment option for the patient with ATAAD, but traditional stent grafts (SGs), which are not designed for the ATAAD, are inapplicable to the unique anatomy of the aortic arch. Therefore, we innovatively created the BRIDGE system (

Feasibility of a Modified Otago Exercise Program for Older Adults With Cognitive Vulnerability.

Cognitive vulnerability, that is, clinically significant symptoms of dementia, depression, or delirium, puts older adults at high risk for physical inactivity and falls. Programs addressing activity and falls are needed. The purpose was to determine feasibility of an in-home, modified, Otago Exercise Program (OEP) for those with cognitive vulnerability, based on acceptability (retention and adherence), safety (pain intensity and falls), and potential positive effects (change in short physical performance battery (SPPB)). This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial included 80 part

Feasibility of Microwave Scissors-Based Off-Clamp Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy in a Porcine Model.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of off-clamp laparoscopic partial nephrectomy using microwave scissors. METHODS: We performed transperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, without hilar clamping or renorrhaphy, using only microwave scissors for renal resection in a porcine model. For each kidney, 2 types of procedures were performed: a middle pole resection excising an area of 2-cm diameter and approximately 1-cm depth and a lower pole resection at the level of the lower polar line. The renal calyces exposed during renal resection were sealed and transected using microwave scissors.

Feasibility randomised controlled trial of the Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions psychological intervention with young adolescents in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Globally, there is a vast mental health treatment gap, whereby the majority of adolescents living in low- and middle-income countries requiring mental health services, do not have access to adequate care. To improve access, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed a range of interventions, designed to be low-cost and delivered by non-specialists. We conducted a two-arm, individually randomised group treatment feasibility trial of a new WHO group intervention for young adolescents with emotional distress ('Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions'; EASE) in Lebanon. METHOD: The ai

Feasibility of telehealth counselling pilot for people experiencing homelessness and/or complex needs: During COVID-19 and beyond.

ISSUES ADDRESSED: People experiencing homelessness and/or complex needs often require targeted health services to address unique vulnerabilities. COVID-19 restrictions acted as a barrier for this group accessing health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services. The Haymarket Foundation, an accommodation and health facility in Australia, transitioned from in-person AOD-counselling services to online consultations. Clients accessing these services were tracked, from March 2019 to November 2020, to assess the impact of the switch to telehealth on client retention. METHODS: Qualitative

Feasibility of parathyroid gland autofluorescence imaging after indocyanine green fluorescence angiography.

BACKGROUND: In thyroid surgery, autofluorescence allows the parathyroid glands (PTGs) to be located very early to protect them. Moreover, indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography (ICG-FA) allows for assessing the viability of the PTGs and identifying blood vessels to preserve them. The main limitation of using ICG-FA is that once ICG has been injected, it is no longer possible to observe PTG autofluorescence using existing devices. This study aimed to describe an approach that allows for visualization of the PTGs by autofluorescence, even after ICG injection. METHODS: We redesigned th

Feasibility evaluation of transtympanic laser stimulation of the cochlea from the outer ear.

Infrared laser stimulation has been studied as an alternative approach to auditory prostheses. This study evaluated the feasibility of infrared laser stimulation of the cochlea from the outer ear, bypassing the middle ear function. An optic fiber was inserted into the ear canal, and a laser was used to irradiate the cochlea through the tympanic membrane in Mongolian gerbils. A pulsed infrared laser (6.9 mJ/cm2) and clicking sound (70 peak-to-peak equivalent sound pressure level) were presented to the animals. The amplitude of the laser-evoked cochlear response was systematically decreased foll

A comparison of the safety, feasibility, and tolerability of ECT and ketamine for treatment-resistant depression.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a problematic and prevalent public health and societal concern. Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the gold standard TRD intervention, the treatment evokes apprehension due to public perceptions, feasibility, and tolerability. Despite significant medical advancements, few medications have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for TRD. In 2019, intranasal esketamine, the S-isomer of racemic ketamine, was approved for TRD, garnering significant excitement about the potential for the drug to act as an alternative treatment to ECT.
