PURPOSE: Common surgical procedures in the treatment of periprosthetic distal femur fractures (PPFF) include osteosynthesis with fixed angle locking plates (LP) and retrograde intramedullary nails (RIN). This study aimed to compare LPs to RINs with oblique fixed angle screws in terms of complications, radiographic results and functional outcome.
METHODS: 63 PPFF in 59 patients who underwent treatment in between 2009 and 2020 were included and retrospectively reviewed. The anatomic lateral and posterior distal femoral angle (aLDFA and aPDFA) were measured on post-surgery radiographs. The Fract

OBJECTIVES: Intramedullary nailing is preferred for treating elderly proximal humeral fractures, but secondary reductions are common, particularly in elderly and osteoporotic patients. This occurs due to the intramedullary nail fixation's insufficient anti-varus and anti-rotational capacities and high stress at the bone-implant interface. We aim to enhance the anti-varus and anti-rotational stability of the fixation structure while reducing the stresses on the bone and internal fixation through structural design.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a novel endosteal anatomical support nail (E

BACKGROUND: Surgery and non-operative treatment produce similar 1-year functional outcomes in patients older than 65 years. Data are lacking for patients older than 75 years. The main objective of this study was to compare surgical vs. non-operative treatment regarding short-term outcomes in patients older than 75 years. In addition to an overall analysis, sub-group analyses were done in patients with displacement and severe displacement (>20 ° posterior tilt).
HYPOTHESIS: Surgery provides better clinical and radiological outcomes than does non-operative treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Pati

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe knee osteoarthritis combined with patellar fracture are rare, and it is unclear whether single-stage surgery affects the enhanced recovery after surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes two patients of Han nationality. A 69-year-old male patient was previously diagnosed with severe knee osteoarthritis of the left knee joint and was treated conservatively with long-term oral nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and intraarticular injection of sodium hyaluronate. He was hospitalized for acute left knee injury owing to a fall from a height. He was di

BACKGROUND: Reverse oblique fractures (AO/OTA 31-A3) account for 5-23% of all intertrochanteric fractures and are challenging to manage. The Gamma 3-Proximal Femoral Nail (GPFN) and the Trochanteric Fixation Nail Advanced (TFNA) are two common cephalomedullary systems used to treat this fracture. No study has reported on outcomes with the TFN-A for reverse oblique fractures. This study aimed to compare outcomes and complication rates in patients with reverse oblique fractures, treated with either TFNA or GPFN.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 203 patients with reverse oblique fractures (137 i

The development of post-traumatic osteoarthrosis after tibial plateau fracture (TPF) is multifactorial and can only be partially influenced by surgical treatment. There is no standardized method for assessing pre- and postoperative knee joint laxity. Data on the incidence of postoperative laxity after TPF are limited. The purpose of this study was to quantify postoperative laxity of the knee joint after TPF. Fifty-four patients (mean age 51 ± 11.9 years) were included in this study. There was a significant increase in anterior-posterior translation in 78.0% and internal rotation in 78.9% in th

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on thoracolumbar fractures with neurological symptoms have focused on how to achieve satisfactory fracture reduction, adequate nerve decompression, and stable spinal alignment. With the development of the minimally invasive spine surgery technique, achieving satisfactory treatment results and reducing iatrogenic trauma at the same time has become a new goal of spinal surgery. This research used percutaneous transpedicular screw distraction to partially reduce the fractured vertebrae, followed by completing nerve decompression and reducing residual displacement bone

BACKGROUND: Despite increased legalization, little is known about the influence of cannabis use disorder (CUD) following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for distal radius fractures (DRFs). The aims were to determine whether CUD patients undergoing ORIF for DRF have increased: (1) medical complications; and (2) health care utilization (emergency department [ED] visits and readmission rates).
METHODS: Patients were identified from an insurance database from 2010 to 2020 using Current Procedural Terminology codes: 25607, 25608, and 25609. Patients with a history of CUD were 1:5 ratio

BACKGROUND: Combined nail/plate technique is a relatively novel method for surgically managing distal femur fractures. It was supposed to allow for early weight bearing and achieve adequate fixation that allow for good bone healing. This study aims to describe our single institution experience of treating distal femur fractures using the combined nail/plate technique.
METHODOLOGY: This is a retrospective study of 14 cases who had AO/OTA fractures 33A_C that were managed with this technique. Patients mean age was 67.6 years and all of them had either obvious osteopenia/osteoporosis or comminut

BACKGROUND: There is limited literature regarding the re-fracture of a previously augmented vertebral compression fracture (VCF). These re-fractures may present as an asymptomatic remodeling of the vertebral body around the cement cast while in other cases they involve the middle column, at the transition zone between the cement-augmented and non-augmented vertebral body. In the latter, a posterior wall retropulsion is possible and, if left untreated, might progress to vertebral body splitting, central canal stenosis, and kyphotic deformity. There is no consensus regarding the best treatment f

BACKGROUND: Despite standard use of chemoprophylaxis, 30-day incidence of venous thromboembolism after geriatric, those older than 60 years, femur fracture surgery is reported to be up to 10%. Missing one dose of enoxaparin has been proven to increase the risk of developing venous thromboembolism. It is commonplace to hold preoperative chemoprophylaxis the morning of surgery because of concern for intraoperative bleeding or wound drainage. We sought to determine whether administration of prophylactic enoxaparin the morning of surgery resulted in an increased rate of blood transfusion or wound

INTRODUCTION: Fixed-angle plate fixation can be an effective treatment for distal radius fractures (DRFs). However, patients with existing ulnar positive variance might be at risk of developing symptoms of ulnar-sided wrist pain (USWP). Ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) is one of the main treatment options for USWP. We hypothesized that a limited radial distraction at the fracture site at the time of surgery for DRF would be functionally equivalent to an indirect USO and that if this were done in a patient with an ulnar plus morphology it could potentially decrease the risk of USWP.
METHODS: T
