The effects of Ménière's disorder on the patient's significant others.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of their partners' MD on the significant others of the patients. DESIGN: Open-ended questionnaire. STUDY SAMPLE: Significant others of members of the Finnish Ménière's Federation. RESULTS: The predominant responses concerned effects on their lives and lifestyle--participation restrictions (effects on personal and community life)--and on personal contextual factors (uncertainty of life). In contrast they fail to list such effects of the patients, focussing rather on the patients' symptoms. Five percent of the responses given entailed positive experiences.

How US Youth Use AI Chatbots: Conversation Patterns From Naturalistic Keystroke Observations.

BACKGROUND: Youth are increasingly engaging with generative AI (GenAI) chatbots; yet, little is known about the nature of their interactions. OBJECTIVE: This study used naturalistic behavioral observations of keystrokes typed into GenAI mobile apps to characterize the topics youth discuss with chatbots, describing themes by age and app, word count by theme (a proxy for quantity of engagement), and co-occurring themes. METHODS: Participants were 3363 US youth aged 1-17 years using the Aura parental monitoring app, a commercially available service that guardians install on children's mobile de

Real-Time Associations Between Subjective Cognitive Concerns and Daily Activity Participation in Persons Aging With Stroke: Smartphone-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of global disability in the aging population, with cognitive impairments playing a significant role. Prior research has shown that subjective cognitive concerns (SCCs) can predict later dementia and serve as an essential indicator for poststroke functional rehabilitation. The use of smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in real-world environments may help us understand how SCCs relate to daily functioning in individuals aging with stroke, thereby guiding cognitive rehabilitation and prevention efforts. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to use EM

Knowledge and Attitude of the General Population Toward E-cigarette Use in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has risen markedly worldwide in recent years, raising public health concerns. E-cigarettes contain many addictive and dangerous substances, including nicotine, different flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and others, making them more appealing but, at the same time, have various harmful effects on health. The available literature on e-cigarette and vape use and their adverse effects is insufficient and limited, even in developed countries, let alone in developing nations like Pakistan. This study investigates the knowledge and

"For Fear that They Would Turn Away from me": From Transgressing Boundaries to Sexual Abuse in Spanish Autistic Women and Non-Binary People.

BACKGROUND: Autistic women and non-binary people experience higher rates of abuse, including sexual abuse, with different negative repercussions for their mental health. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors that lead autistic women and non-binary people to become victims of sexual abuse. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven women and two non-binary people, all of them Spanish and with a late diagnosis of autism. We analyzed the data using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: We generated four main themes as follows: (1) crossing their own boundaries to belong

Toward Sustaining Web-Based Senior Center Programming Accessibility With and for Older Adult Immigrants: Community-Based Participatory Research Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many community-based organizations serving Asian Americans pivoted to provide web-based care and social services. Asian American community leaders in the United States Pacific Northwest, including Asian Health & Service Center expressed that there are older immigrant adults who experienced backlash from discrimination, fear, and anxiety owing in part to anti-Asian hate and isolation, including from infection precautions. Pivoting supported staying safe from COVID-19 transmission and anti-Asian hate crimes. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the rea

Determinants and Disparities of Neurosurgery Patients Refusing Inpatient Palliative Care After Provider Recommendation.

Background Disparities have been found in the utilization of palliative care (PC). However, a limitation of existing research is that it co-mingles factors affecting whether a patient is offered PC with factors affecting whether a patient accepts/refuses PC. Our objective is to identify the determinants and disparities of neurosurgery patients accepting/refusing inpatient PC after a provider recommends an inpatient PC consult. Methodology In this single-center retrospective cohort study, the last 750 consecutive neurosurgery patient medical records were screened. Inclusion criteria were as fol

The role of household size and living with children in antibiotic use and antibiotic-related behaviours and beliefs: results from a general population survey in Poland.

BACKGROUND: The threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is driven by both infection transmission and the overuse of antibiotics. These factors may interact with sociodemographic contexts, as larger households or those with children could increase opportunities for pathogen transmission and informal antibiotic sharing. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine if antibiotic use, or related beliefs and behaviours, were associated with household status (with/without children) or size (single, two persons, 3-4 persons, more than four persons). METHODS: This was a pre-registered, cross-sectional survey

Inducing Interpersonal Closeness: Effects on Inter-Brain Synchrony and Collaborative Performance.

Feeling close to another person is widely assumed to facilitate collaboration. However, causal evidence that interpersonal closeness improves collaborative behavior remains limited, and it is unclear whether any such influence is accompanied by increased synchrony at the neural level. Previous studies comparing inter-brain synchrony (IBS) and collaborative performance across relationship types (e.g., friends vs. strangers) have reported better collaboration and higher IBS in closer relationships, but these effects are confounded by familiarity and shared interaction history. To address these l

Perceived discrimination, coping, and psychosocial adjustment: A mixed methods study of Chinese internal migrant youth.

Studies of identity-based discrimination among Chinese youth attending vocational schools and working in urban areas are scarce. To contribute to the global understanding, we adopted an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design with 204 Chinese internal migrant youth (Aged 16-24, 68.1% male, Mage = 20.17 years, SD = 1.57) to examine the associations between perceived discrimination and psychological adjustment, and the moderating roles of coping and perceived social support. In the first phase, participants completed self-report measures, and in the second phase, we interviewed a subsample o

Improving Care through Improv: pilot test results of an innovative training program for care partners of people living with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Identifying effective evidence-based ways to prepare the growing number of family members and friends who are or will be providing care to someone living with dementia is a critical public health issue. Training care partners in skills associated with improvisational (improv) theatre holds promise for improved communication yet requires formal investigation. DESIGN AND METHODS: We pilot tested the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the training program, "Improving Care through Improv," among care partners of people living with moderate dementia. Injuries and well-being among adolescents in Finland from 2013 to 2021.

Injuries lead to heath loss, disability, and significant costs. The aim of this study was to evaluate self-reported home and leisure injuries outside school by the 8th and 9th graders in Finnish secondary schools, and potential explanatory factors associated with their injuries. Data were gathered on 383 550 pupils in cross-sectional surveys (every second school year) done between years 2013 and 2021. Associations between injuries and the explanatory variables were assessed using logistic regression analysis. Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model and the KINDL-R health-related quality of life m

Lean on me: Social factors and diabetes outcomes among young adults with type 1 diabetes prior to transitioning to adult care.

AIMS: Little is known about how different aspects of social relationships relate to diabetes self-management and glycaemic outcomes in young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). We examined relationships of general and diabetes-specific social variables with diabetes self-management and HbA1c. We hypothesized diabetes-specific factors would more strongly associate with self-management and HbA1c than general social factors. METHODS: We analysed baseline data from 100 young adults with T1D (Mage = 19.9 ± 1.3 years) enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of a paediatric to adult care transition

Attitudes toward AI in health- and non-health-related contexts: Context matters, not mood or perceived social support.

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems increasingly permeate healthcare and daily life, understanding the factors that shape attitudes toward their use is crucial. This study examined how individuals' general attitudes toward AI and their willingness to use AI-based tools in specific situations vary, and how these relate to mood, pain-related affective traits, and perceived social support. A total of 302 participants completed self-report measures assessing willingness to use AI in three contexts (health without pain, health with pain, and non-health; measured by scales in a Situational Judgm
