Association between Levels of Alcohol Use, Perceived HIV Risk, and Untreated HIV Among Persons at Alcohol-Serving Venues in Kenya and Uganda.

Alcohol-serving venues in East Africa are high-risk environments for HIV transmission but few studies in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have examined perceived HIV risk and sexual risk behaviors by alcohol use levels on a broader population of persons at alcohol-serving venues in the era of biomedical HIV prevention. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of adults (≥ 18 years) at alcohol-serving venues in eight communities (~ 10,000 residents/community) in rural western Kenya and southwestern Uganda. We distributed recruitment cards to patrons and workers and invited them for free HIV screening at

The Burden of Intersecting Internalized Homophobia and Internalized HIV Stigma Can Exacerbate Depression Symptoms Among Gay Men Living with HIV in Türkiye.

Gay men with HIV face stigma associated with both their sexual orientation and their HIV status. The intersectional stigma framework suggests that the co-occurrence and internalization of multiple stigmas may harm mental health. In the context of Türkiye, limited public discussion about HIV and sexual diversity may contribute to intersectional stigma experiences. In total, 255 Turkish gay men with HIV completed validated measures of internalized HIV stigma, internalized homophobia, and depression symptoms. Two analytic techniques recommended for intersectional effects were conducted: multiple

Advanced HIV disease among newly diagnosed clients identified through community- and facility-based HIV testing services in Eswatini: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the Kingdom of Eswatini surpassing the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, the persistence of Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) remains a clinical concern. Advanced HIV Disease increases morbidity and mortality. This study evaluated the rate of AHD among newly diagnosed clients aged ≥15 identified through the community-based testing in comparison to the facility-based testing. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two groups (community and facility) of individuals newly diagnosed with HIV using secondary program data (October 2022-September 2025) to identify clients with WHO cli

Activation of CXCR3+ Tfh cells and B cells in lymph nodes during acute HIV-1 infection correlates with HIV-specific antibody development.

UNLABELLED: Lymph node T follicular helper (Tfh) cells and germinal center (GC) B cells are critical to generate potent antibodies but are rarely possible to study in humans. To understand how Tfh/GC B-cell interactions during acute HIV-1 infection (AHI) impact the generation of HIV-specific antibodies, we performed a unique cross-sectional analysis of inguinal lymph node biopsies taken prior to antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation in AHI. Although total Tfh and GC B cell frequencies did not change during AHI, increased frequencies of proliferating Th1-like CXCR3+ Tfh, CXCR3+ non-GC B cells

Injectable Contraceptives Differentially Affect Select CD4+ HIV-1 Target Cells in the Genital Tract but Not Systemically: Implications for HIV-1 Acquisition.

PROBLEM: Observational data suggest lower HIV susceptibility in women using the injectable contraceptive norethisterone enanthate (NET-EN) versus intramuscular depo medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-IM). Clinical data investigating the effects of injectables on HIV target cells are inconsistent or limited. No data on HIV target cells are available from head-to-head randomized trials comparing DMPA-IM and NET-EN, nor at peak progestin concentrations. METHOD OF STUDY: The women's health, injectable contraception, and HIV (WHICH) trial randomized women to DMPA-IM or NET-EN at two South African s

Exploring the relationship between established HIV risk factors and depressive symptoms amongst young women without HIV in two sites in South Africa.

PURPOSE: Adolescent girls are at high risk for depression and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition. Poor mental health can increase vulnerability to risky sexual behaviours. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of depressive symptomology and explore the convergence of HIV risk factors with depressive symptoms amongst cis-gender adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in rural KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and peri-urban Western Cape (WC) communities in South Africa. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data from two sites in South Africa was used - the rural Vulindlela community

HIV Testing Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Among Persons who Inject Drugs - National HIV Behavioral Surveillance, 19 Cities, 2018 and 2022.

HIV testing decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic among persons who inject drugs (PWID), though it is unclear how these changes in HIV testing affected different sub-groups of PWID. We estimated the change in past-year HIV testing between 2018 and 2022 overall and by sociodemographic and health care characteristics among PWID. Past-year HIV testing significantly decreased between 2018 and 2022 overall and across most sub-groups of PWID, including PWID accessing and not accessing medical and harm reduction services. Integrating HIV testing across medical and harm reduction services accessed by

HIV-phyloTSI: subtype-independent estimation of time since HIV-1 infection for cross-sectional measures of population incidence using deep sequence data.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the time since HIV infection (TSI) at population level is essential for tracking changes in the global HIV epidemic. Most methods for determining TSI give a binary classification of infections as recent or non-recent within a window of several months, and cannot assess the cumulative impact of an intervention. RESULTS: We developed a Random Forest Regression model, HIV-phyloTSI, which combines measures of within-host diversity and divergence to generate continuous TSI estimates directly from viral deep-sequencing data, with no need for additional variables. HIV-phyloTSI

HIV care indicators during the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to pre-pandemic care patterns among people with HIV in North Carolina.

The COVID-19 pandemic abruptly altered the way HIV care was accessed and delivered. We sought to assess HIV care indicators during the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to pre-pandemic HIV care patterns in North Carolina. Using statewide HIV surveillance data and group-based trajectory models, we identified pre-pandemic HIV care trajectories in two partially overlapping populations: (1) newly HIV-diagnosed from March 2014 through February 2018, followed from diagnosis to pandemic start (March 1, 2020); and (2) previously HIV-diagnosed before March 2016, followed from March 2016 to pandemic start.

Enhanced cervical cancer and HIV interventions reduce the disproportionate burden of cervical cancer cases among women living with HIV: A modeling analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Women living with HIV experience heightened risk of cervical cancer, and over 50% of cases in Southern Africa are attributed to HIV co-infection. Cervical cancer interventions tailored by HIV status delivered with HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) for treatment can decrease cancer incidence, but impact on HIV-related disparities remains understudied. METHODS: Using a dynamic model calibrated to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, we projected HIV prevalence, cervical cancer incidence, and proportion of cancer cases among women living with HIV between 2021-2071. Bridging internalized HIV stigma and depressive symptoms among people living with HIV in China during the COVID-19 pandemic: a network analysis.

Previous research has documented that HIV-related stigma may be a significant trigger of mental health problems among people living with HIV (PLWH). However, less is known about how internalized HIV stigma is linked to depressive symptoms among PLWH during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current study sought to explore the network structure of internalized HIV stigma and depressive symptoms, along with bridge nodes, to elucidate how they co-exist. Participants were 1,197 Chinese PLWH (64.3% male, Mage = 41.52, SD = 9.20) who completed the measurements of internalized HIV stigma and depressive sympt

Measuring Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Unfolded Protein Response in HIV-1 Infected T-Cells and Analyzing its Role in HIV-1 Replication.

Viral infections can cause Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress due to abnormal protein accumulation, leading to Unfolded Protein Response (UPR). Viruses have developed strategies to manipulate the host UPR, but there is a lack of detailed understanding of UPR modulation and its functional significance during HIV-1 infection in the literature. In this context, the current article describes the protocols used in our laboratory to measure ER stress levels and UPR during HIV-1 infection in T-cells and the effect of UPR on viral replication and infectivity. Thioflavin T (ThT) staining is a relatively

Perspectives of healthcare providers around providing family planning services to women living with HIV attending six HIV treatment clinics in Lusaka, Zambia.

ABSTRACTWhile international guidelines recommend integration of family planning (FP) and HIV services, limited research has been done to explore how healthcare providers perceive the feasibility and utility of integrated services. To address this gap, we administered a standardized questionnaire to 85 providers from 6 HIV clinics in Lusaka, Zambia, before (April-May 2018) and after (May-June 2019) implementing an enhanced model of FP/HIV service integration. We tested for differences in FP knowledge, attitudes and practices between the two time periods with tests appropriate for paired observa

How do new crises impact HIV risk behaviour - exploring HIV risk behaviour according to COVID-19-related orphanhood status in South Africa?

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in high death rates globally, and over 10.5 million children lost a parent or primary caregiver. Because HIV-related orphanhood has been associated with elevated HIV risk, we sought to examine HIV risk in children affected by COVID-19 orphanhood. Four hundred and twenty-one children and adolescents were interviewed, measuring seven HIV risk behaviours: condom use, age-disparate sex, transactional sex, multiple partners, sex associated with drugs/alcohol, mental health and social risks. Approximately 50% (211/421) experienced orphanhood due to COVID-19, 4.8% (20/4
