Impact of family and caregiver factors on development and behaviours in maltreated young children.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of developmental and emotional/ behavioural concerns in maltreated children and to examine the impact of adverse family/caregiver risk factors on these outcomes. METHOD: We analysed family demographic and baseline data of 132 maltreated children and their caregivers from a family support programme in Singapore. We examined the associations of 3 main risk factors (i.e., caregiver mental health, educational attainment, and family socio-economic status [SES]) with developmental/behavioural outcomes using multivariable logistic regression,

Communication interaction in ICU--Patient and staff experiences and perceptions.

Patients on intensive care units (ICU) have difficulty with communication [Menzel LK. Factors related to the emotional responses of intubated patients to being unable to speak. Heart Lung 1998; 27(4):245-52]. Feelings of anger and low mood have been reported, which can lead to reduced participation in rehabilitation. For members of the multidisciplinary team breakdown in communication with patients may be frustrating and related to a limited knowledge of strategies and resources to facilitate communication. The NHS Modernisation Agency Critical Care Programme (2002) identified speech and langu

Holding collaboration together: a community response using a violence threat and suicide prevention protocol.

Coordinated, multi-sectoral community responses to youth mental health represent a promising yet undertheorized approach to addressing the service fragmentation that characterizes collaborative work across education, health, policing, and community services. This article presents qualitative findings from a larger sequential mixed-methods study of Strathcona County's Violence, Trauma, and Suicide Prevention (VTSP) Protocol. The VTSP Protocol is a coordinated community framework designed to address youth mental health, community safety, and wellbeing in Alberta, Canada. The larger study combine

Strategies for addressing COVID-19 vaccine equity with intermediaries, prevention research centers, and the vaccine confidence network.

In April 2021, the CDC provided supplemental funding to all 26 Prevention Research Centers (PRCs) to create the PRC Vaccine Confidence Network (VCN) to increase COVID-19 vaccine confidence and uptake in communities disparately impacted by COVID-19 and/or in vaccine hesitant populations. A key strategy to building vaccine confidence was engaging with intermediaries (i.e., mutually trusted community and practice-based organizations conducting community outreach and intervention activities) to address barriers for our shared communities of focus. These intermediaries were key in building communit

Training a medical workforce to meet the needs of diverse minority communities.

BACKGROUND: The growing demand for a competent health workforce to meet the needs of increasingly diverse societies has been widely acknowledged. One medical school in New Zealand explored the integration of the commonly used patient-centred model approach, with an intersectional framework in the development of a cultural competency training programme. In the Pacific Immersion Programme, medical students in their fourth year of training are given the opportunity to learn about different factors that influence the health and health care of a minority community through immersion in that communit

Barriers to maternal health services during the Ebola outbreak in three West African countries: a literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa, affecting Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone from 2014 to 2016, was a substantial public health crisis with health impacts extending past EVD itself. Access to maternal health services (MHS) was disrupted during the epidemic, with reductions in antenatal care, facility-based deliveries and postnatal care. We aimed to identify and describe barriers related to the uptake and provision of MHS during the 2014-2016 EVD outbreak in West Africa. METHODS: In June 2020, we conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed publications and gr

Inequality in America: the contribution of health centers in reducing and eliminating disparities in access to care.

Reducing and eliminating health status disparities by providing access to appropriate health care is a goal of the nation's health care delivery system. This article reviews the literature that demonstrates a relationship between access to appropriate health care and reductions in health status disparities. Using comprehensive site-level data, patient surveys, and medical record reviews, the authors present an evaluation of the ability of health centers to provide such access. Access to a regular and usual source of care alone can mitigate health status disparities. The safety net health cente
