Holter Monitor Rhythm Parameters in Healthy Infants, Children, and Adolescents: Defining Reference Limits With Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ambulatory electrocardiography has been in clinical use for 5 decades. However, reference limits for rhythm parameters in healthy infants, children, and adolescents have not been adequately defined. We sought to determine these reference ranges using meta-analysis of existing published studies of 24-hour Holter monitoring in healthy pediatric populations. METHODS: Multiple literature databases were searched from 1969 to May 2024 for relevant studies. Data extraction and analysis were completed according to the Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. The

Transient hypogammaglobulinemia of infancy and unclassified syndromic immunodeficiencies are highly common in oesophageal atresia patients.

Due to the high rate of post-operative sepsis and other infectious complications, a routine immunological screening protocol has been initiated since 2015 in our paediatric surgery clinic for all patients admitted with oesophageal atresia (EA) and warrant a delayed definitive treatment. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the immunodeficiencies in EA patients, by comparing them to healthy age-matched controls. As a prospective cohort study, EA patients admitted between 2015 and 2022, who had their definitive operation after the newborn period (>28 days of age) were included. On admission, serum

High urinary flow in women with stress incontinence: corrected flow-age nomogram evaluation after a transobturator tape procedure.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We noninvasively compared urinary flow in both pre- and post-transobturator tape (TOT) procedures in stress urinary incontinence (SUI) patients using previously reported corrected flow-age nomograms in healthy women. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent a successful TOT procedure to treat SUI. Non-instrumented uroflowmetry was performed before and 3 months after surgery. Corrected maximum flow rate (cQmax) and average flow rate (cQave) were calculated using Qmax/√voided volume (VV) and Qave/√VV respectively. The ratio of correct

Cerebral oxygenation is depressed during sleep in healthy term infants when they sleep prone.

OBJECTIVE: Prone sleeping is a major risk factor for the sudden infant death syndrome and is associated with lower blood pressure and impaired arousability from sleep, both of which may be signs of cerebral hypoxia. However, the impact of sleep position on cerebral oxygenation during infancy remains unknown. We assessed the effects of sleeping position, sleep state, and postnatal age on cerebral oxygenation by measuring tissue oxygenation index (TOI) during the first 6 months of infancy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Seventeen healthy term infants (8 girls and 9 boys) were recruited as study particip

Age-independent anti-angiogenic therapy for choroidal neovascularization by targeting secretogranin III.

Recent studies reported that anti-angiogenic drugs targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) alleviate choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in young but not aged animals. We recently developed a disease-targeted anti-angiogenic therapy against secretogranin III (Scg3), which selectively binds to diseased but not healthy vessels in young mice. Herein, using a unique in vivo ligand binding assay, we predicted and confirmed that Scg3 selectively binds CNV vessels in both young and aged mice. In contrast, VEGF with minimal increased binding to CNV vessels exhibited an age-dependent decline

Diminished submandibular salivary flow in dementia of the Alzheimer type.

Dementia of the Alzheimer Type (DAT) is the most common type of dementia among the elderly. Alzheimer's disease is a major public health problem, yet little is known about the potential oral consequences of the disease. Because saliva is believed to be essential for the preservation of oral health and function, salivary gland fluid output was evaluated in a population of essentially healthy patients with early-stage DAT. Unstimulated and stimulated parotid and submandibular salivary gland secretions were collected from 28 nonmedicated and otherwise healthy DAT patients, and 35 age-matched heal

(Interfering) Cortical mechanisms of standing balance and cognition in old-age depression: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study.

Major depressive disorder in old age can cause changes in the cerebral cortex that might lead to postural imbalance and thus increase fall risk. We aim to examine cortical activation during standing balance in depressed older patients compared to healthy controls and to determine how an additional cognitive task affects this activation. Eleven older patients (age ≥65 years) diagnosed with major depressive disorder and sixteen age-matched healthy controls participated in the study. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to assess cortical activation of the prefrontal (PFC) and m

[Long-term outcome of cryptorchism after orchiopexy].

The long-term outcome of cryptorchism (undescended testis) was studied in 43 patients who underwent orchidopexy at pre-puberty ages and who were over 15 years of age at the time of this study. The follow-up period after operation was 11 approximately 23 years. Cryptorchism was unilateral in 39 patients and bilateral in 4 patients. The sperm concentration and motility were examined, using a cut-off level of 20 x 10(6)/ml for sperm concentration and 50% for sperm motility. In the unilateral cryptorchism group, 16 patients (61.5%) had normal semen quality, 8 patients (30.8%) oligozoospermia, 1 (3

Effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on natural killer cell activity in patients with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Alteration of innate and acquired immunity can play a role in the mechanism involved in the development of dementia. Epidemiologic studies indicate that the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can delay the onset or slow progression of Alzheimer disease. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the use of NSAIDs is associated with natural killer activity alteration in AD and multi-infarct vascular dementia patients, as compared with non-demented elderly and healthy young people. METHODS: In this prospective open study four groups of subjects (AD, VD, non-demented elderly, and he

Association of plasma soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor concentrations and migraine with aura: a REFORM study.

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) has garnered attention as a potential blood-based biomarker for low-grade chronic inflammation. However, its specific association with migraine, including its subtypes, remains to be elucidated. We sought to examine the association of plasma suPAR levels with migraine and its subtypes. In this single-centre, cross-sectional study, plasma was collected at a single time point in adults with migraine and sex-matched healthy controls from October 2020 to June 2022. The quantification of plasma suPAR levels was performed in a blinded fashion
