Three-site screening for STIs in men who have sex with men using online self-testing in an English sexual health service.

OBJECTIVES: Among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the UK,Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoea (NG) infections commonly occur asymptomatically at extragenital sites. Therefore, MSM seeking sexual health services are offered three-site (oropharyngeal, rectal and urogenital) STI screening. To increase access to screening, some UK sexual health services enable asymptomatic service users to order free STI screening kits online for self-sampling at home. We sought to assess prevalence of overall and extragenital CT/NG infection among asymptomatic MSM who used online self-testing in

Europe-wide expansion and eradication of multidrug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae lineages: a genomic surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Genomic surveillance using quality-assured whole-genome sequencing (WGS) together with epidemiological and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data is essential to characterise the circulating Neisseria gonorrhoeae lineages and their association to patient groups (defined by demographic and epidemiological factors). In 2013, the European gonococcal population was characterised genomically for the first time. We describe the European gonococcal population in 2018 and identify emerging or vanishing lineages associated with AMR and epidemiological characteristics of patients, to elucidate

Negotiating Use of a Blood-Based, Dual HIV and Syphilis Test with Potential Sexual Partners Among a Sample of Cisgender Men and Transgender Women Who Have Sex with Men in New York City.

Cisgender men who have sex with men (cMSM) and transgender women (TGW) are disproportionally burdened by HIV. Among these populations, HIV partner-testing is a highly acceptable harm reduction tool. Particularly, cMSM and TGW report a stronger preference for blood-based tests that include assays for multiple STIs. However, no existing research has explored how these populations negotiate blood-based testing with sexual partners. In the SMARTtest study, 48 sexually active cMSM and TGW took home dual, blood-based HIV/Syphilis kits for self- and partner-testing. After 3 months, they completed a f

Characteristics of HIV/sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men and women in Bangkok, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a key HIV target population in Thailand. An important subgroup is men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) as they can sexually transmit infections between individuals with different gender identities. This study compared the sexually transmitted infection risk behavior of different types of men in Thailand. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 839 consecutive male patients who visited an STI clinic in Bangkok, Thailand, between 2014 and 2020. RESULTS: Men who have sex with women only (MSWO) predominated (58.0%), follow

Comprehensive Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening and Testing Interventions in a Predominantly Heterosexual Population with HIV at a Health Center.

In the United States, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have remained elevated for the fifth consecutive year from 2015 to 2019. There is a need to implement standardization of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention STI screening and testing recommendations. Higher STI incidence populations such as people with HIV, men who have sex with men, and adolescents and young adults, are frequently not screened and tested for bacterial STIs as recommended. Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) have the potential to deliver STI services for at-risk individuals as a routine component

A baseline epidemiological study of the co-infection of enteric protozoans with human immunodeficiency virus among men who have sex with men from Northeast China.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and enteric parasite co-infection not only aggravates the clinical symptoms of parasites but also accelerates acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) progression. However, co-infection research on men who have sex with men (MSM), the predominant high-risk population of HIV/AIDS in China, is still limited. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology of enteric parasites, risk factors, and associations with clinical significance in an MSM HIV/AIDS population in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. METHODS: We recruited 308 MSMs HIV/AIDS pa

Ecological and Syndemic Predictors of Drug Use During Sex and Transactional Sex among U.S. Black Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Secondary Data Analysis from the HPTN 061 Study.

Threats to sexual health among U.S. Black men who have sex with men (MSM) may manifest in a context of social adverse experiences. Situational sex is one such context, which we characterize as sexual behaviors driven either by a desire to cultivate a specific sexual experience or attributable to social vulnerability. Two characterizations of situational sex explored in this study were drug use during sex and transactional sex. Guided by ecological and syndemic frameworks, we conducted a secondary data analysis of social conditions and sexual behaviors among a prospective cohort of Black MSM fr

Partner number and use of COVID-19 risk reduction strategies during initial phases of the pandemic in British Columbia, Canada: a survey of sexual health service clients.

OBJECTIVES: Initial public health guidance related to sex and COVID-19 infection focused on reducing partner number. We characterized individuals having a higher partner number during the initial phases of the pandemic. METHODS: In British Columbia, the initial wave of COVID-19 cases was from March 14 to May 19, 2020, followed by gradual lifting of public health restrictions. We conducted an e-mail survey of existing sexual health service clients during the period of July 23 to August 4, 2020. Decrease in prevalence but increase in frequency of non-marijuana drug use following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in a large cohort of young men who have sex with men and young transgender women.

BACKGROUND: Substantial concern exists regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on substance use behaviors. This is especially true for subpopulations like young men who have sex with men and young transgender women (YMSM-YTW) who report higher rates of substance use. This study examines changes in prevalence and frequency of marijuana and non-marijuana drug use among YMSM-YTW following the onset of the pandemic. METHOD: Data for this analysis (n = 458 participants, 1356 observations) come from an ongoing longitudinal cohort study of YMSM-YTW. A series of Bayesian multilevel models were

Recurrence of Disseminated Mycobacterium avium intracellulare Presenting as Spondylodiscitis and Epidural Abscess in a Patient with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

BACKGROUND Mycobacterium avium intracellulare complex (MAI) is a member of the non-tuberculous mycobacteria family, which can cause both pulmonary and non-pulmonary disease. In patients with advanced HIV, it is known to cause disseminated disease. We present a case of a 65-year-old man who has sex with men (MSM) with AIDS, found to have spondylodiscitis and an epidural abscess, who had recently completed treatment for disseminated MAI. CASE REPORT The patient was a 65-year-old with AIDS secondary to HIV and a prior history of disseminated MAI, who presented with severe back pain. Upon presenta

Association between sexual orientation acceptance and suicidal ideation, substance use, and internalised homophobia amongst the pink carpet Y cohort study of young gay, bisexual, and queer men in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual and queer (GBQ) men are frequently subjected to minority stressors that have negative impacts on their health. Milestones that include the acceptance and disclosure of sexual identity amongst GBQ men are hence key instruments in understanding the prevalence of internalised homophobia and predicting health outcomes. As such, this work takes a novel approach to deduce the correlates of delayed acceptance of sexual orientation in young GBQ men as a measure of internalised homophobia through retrospective self-reporting and age-based analysis. METHODS: Participants were

Microelimination or Not? The Changing Epidemiology of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Hepatitis C Virus Coinfection in France 2012-2018.

BACKGROUND: The arrival of highly effective, well-tolerated, direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) led to a dramatic decrease in hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-HCV-coinfected patients are deemed a priority population for HCV elimination, while a rise in recently acquired HCV infections in men who have sex with men (MSM) has been described. We describe the variations in HIV-HCV epidemiology in the French Dat'AIDS cohort. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort of persons living with HIV (PLWH) from 2012 to 2018. We determined HC

Characterization of HIV-1 recombinant and subtype B near full-length genome among men who have sex with men in South Korea.

In Korea, subtype B is the predominant variant of HIV-1, but full genome sequencing and analysis of its viral variants are lacking. We performed near full-length genome (NFLG) sequencing and phylogenetic and recombination analyses of fifty plasma samples from HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) from a Korea HIV/AIDS cohort study. Viral genomes were amplified and the near-full-length sequences were determined using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and Sanger sequencing. We focused on the HIV-1 subtype classification and identification of HIV recombinants. Twelve HIV-1 NFLGs were determ

A narrative systematic review of sexualised drug use and sexual health outcomes among LGBT people.

INTRODUCTION: Chemsex is a specific form of sexualised drug use (SDU) that is an emerging public health issue among men who have sex with men (MSM). Although the recent focus on chemsex is a reflection of the associated harms it is important to understand SDU more broadly and its associations with risk behaviours. Additionally, some of the reasons suggested for MSM engagement in SDU are also likely to apply to women who have sex with women (WSW) and trans people. The aim of this review was to investigate SDU, including chemsex, among lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people international

Prevalence of oral human papillomavirus infection among Indian HIV-positive men who have sex with men: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been causally linked to a subset of oropharyngeal cancers in Western populations, and both oropharyngeal cancer and oral HPV infection are increased among HIV-positive individuals. India has high incidences of oral and oropharyngeal cancers, and Indian HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) may be at increased risk of developing oropharyngeal cancers. However, there is little information available on the prevalence of oral HPV in this population. METHODS: We tested 302 HIV-positive Indian MSM for oral HPV infection using L1 HPV D

Adherence to Daily Oral TDF/FTC for PrEP in Community Health Center Populations: The Sustainable Health Center Implementation PrEP Pilot (SHIPP) Study.

The prevention effectiveness of oral preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly dependent on medication adherence but no validated longer term PrEP adherence measures are readily available for use by primary care clinicians caring for diverse populations. We compared two self-report measures (number of doses missed in past 7 days and day-by-day past week pill taking) to results of tenofovir concentrations in dried blood spot (DBS) samples at quarterly visits over the first 12 months of PrEP use. 1420 men and women in five US community health centers enrolled in a medication adherence substudy.
