Factors Associated with Medication Adherence to Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics: Results from the STAR Network Depot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are prescribed to people with severe psychiatric disorders who show poor adherence to oral medication. The present paper examined factors potentially associated with medication adherence to LAI treatment. METHODS: The STAR (Servizi Territoriali Associati per la Ricerca) Network Depot Study was a multicenter, observational, prospective study that enrolled 461 subjects initiating a LAI from 32 Italian centers. After 6 and 12 months of treatment, we evaluated differences between participants with high (≥5 points) and low (<5 points) medic

The processing of angry faces in schizophrenia patients with a history of suicide: An fMRI study examining brain activity and connectivity.

BACKGROUND: The high rate of suicidal behaviours (SBs) in psychiatric populations remain an important preoccupation to address. The literature reveals emotional instability as an important risk factor for SBs. However, the neural mechanisms underpinning this risk factor have never been investigated in schizophrenia patients with SBs. The following study implemented a task-based emotional processing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm to evaluate the activation and connectivity differences exhibited by schizophrenia patients with a history of suicide attempt (SA). METHOD: A s

Positive and negative uses of social media among adolescents hospitalized for suicidal behavior.

INTRODUCTION: There is public concern about potential associations between adolescent social media/smartphone use and risk for suicide. However, no prior studies leverage qualitative methods to explore the experiences of adolescents currently at-risk for suicide. METHODS: This study examined social technology use from the perspectives of adolescents (n = 30; Mage = 16.1 years) currently hospitalized for a recent suicide attempt or severe ideation. We conducted in-depth interviews and coded transcripts using thematic analysis. We had three research questions: What (1) negative and (2) positive

Vexing visits: Variables correlating with physician perceptions of patients as "difficult" and overall enjoyment of their delivery of primary ambulatory care.

All physicians experience some patients described as "difficult." Their prevalence negatively impacts work satisfaction. Prior research identified factors present when physicians perceive patients as difficult. Numerous variables are unrelated to vexing patient visits. Three additive patient characteristics predict difficult encounters: 1) depressive or anxiety comorbidity, 2) polysymptomatic patients, and 3) high symptom severity. The sole physician variable was their score on the Physician Belief Scale (PBS) which quantifies negative attitudes towards psychosocial problems. When all three pa

An intersectional burden: Gender and sexual stigma against toms in Thailand.

Sexual stigma has deleterious effects on the health and wellbeing of sexual minority women. In low- and middle-income countries, theories and research on stigma against sexual minority women largely focus on sexuality-related stigma processes, such as internalized homophobia or perceived or enacted stigma due to sexual identity, attraction or practice. Yet, there is considerable gender diversity among sexual minority women. Further, sexuality and gender identity may intersect with broader gender inequalities to influence the experience of stigma among some groups. In this study, we conducted 2

Interactions between Genetic, Prenatal, Cortisol, and Parenting Influences on Adolescent Substance Use and Frequency: A TRAILS Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic relations between genetic, hormone, and pre- and postnatal environments are theorized as critically important for adolescent substance use but are rarely tested in multifactorial models. This study assessed the impact of interactions of genetic risk and cortisol reactivity with prenatal and parenting influences on both any and frequency of adolescent substance use. METHODS: Data are from the TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS), a prospective longitudinal, multi-rater study of 2,230 Dutch adolescents. Genetic risk was assessed via 3 substance-specific p

Mental health and behavioural factors involved in road traffic crashes by young adults: analysis of the Raine Study.

BACKGROUND: Road traffic crashes (RTC) are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in young people. Severe mental health and behavioural conditions increase the likelihood of RTC, as do a range of driving-risk activities. METHOD: We used data from the Raine Study, a prebirth cohort from Perth, Australia, to assess the relationship between measures of common mental health or behavioural conditions (Child Behavior Checklist Internalising and Externalising scores) at age 17 and subsequent RTC by 27 years, controlling for substance use and driving-risk activities. RESULTS: By 27 years of age,

Frontal lobes dysfunction across clinical clusters of acute schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a clinical construct comprising manifold phenotypes underlying heterogeneous biological underpinnings. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) represents the standard tool in the clinical characterization of patients affected by schizophrenia, allowing to detect different clinical profiles within the disorder. Frontal lobes are a key area of brain dysfunction in schizophrenia. We investigated whether different clinical profiles in acute schizophrenia show differences in frontal lobes dysfunction or not. METHODS: We defined PANSS-derived principal compon

Effectiveness of Zhong-Yong thinking based dialectical behavior therapy group skills training versus supportive group therapy for lowering suicidal risks in Chinese young adults: A randomized controlled trial with a 6-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a first-line treatment for the prevention of suicide. Zhong-Yong thinking could be viewed as a Chinese way of dialectical thinking, has long been a culturally dictating thinking style in China. To enhance cultural adaptability, we integrated Zhong-Yong thinking into DBT group skills training and examined its efficacy in suicidal prevention compared with a supportive group therapy and a wait-list group in high-risk suicidal Chinese college students. METHODS: A total of 97 suicidal participants were randomized to either Zhong-Yong thinking based

Schizophrenia phenomenology revisited: positive and negative symptoms are strongly related reflective manifestations of an underlying single trait indicating overall severity of schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: To examine whether negative symptoms, psychosis, hostility, excitation, and mannerism (PHEM symptoms), formal thought disorders (FTD) and psychomotor retardation (PMR) are interrelated phenomena in major neurocognitive psychosis (MNP) or deficit schizophrenia and whether those domains belong to an underlying latent vector reflecting general psychopathology. METHODS: In this study, we recruited 120 patients with MNP or deficit schizophrenia and 54 healthy subjects and measured the above-mentioned symptom domains. RESULTS: In MNP, there were significant associations between negativ

Psychological distress of suicide attempters predicts one-year suicidal deaths during 2007-2016: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Of the risk factors for suicide, prior attempt is regarded as one of the strongest for subsequent attempts or completed suicide. This large-scale cohort study aims to examine whether the distress level of individual mental symptoms and general psychopathology measured at the index attempt can predict subsequent suicide death within one year. METHODS: The participants were 104,441 suicide attempters first reported to the Taiwan National Suicide Surveillance System during 2007-2016, who completed the five-item Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5) at the index attempt.
