Urban ecology of hosts and vectors of Rickettsia in a rickettsiosis-endemic city of the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.

Rickettsioses are vector-borne zoonotic diseases that occur in urban environments. Currently, they are associated with the presence of domestic and synanthropic animals, the ectoparasites that they harbor, and their local habitat. The implementation of prevention actions relies on the understanding of the local ecology of interactions between hosts, vector species, and the etiologic agents. In this context, this study aimed to explore and describe the occurrence of infected mammals and their ectoparasites in human urban dwellings, and those characteristics of urban dwellings associated to the

High seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and probability of detecting tissue cysts in backyard laying hens compared with hens from large free-range farms.

Serological assays are commonly used to determine the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in livestock, but the predictive value of seropositivity with respect to the presence of infective tissue cysts is less clear. The present study aimed at the identification of seropositive and seronegative free-range laying hens from organic and backyard farms, and the relationship with the presence of viable tissue cysts. In addition, potential risk and protective factors on the selected farms were investigated. An in-house T. gondii surface antigen (TgSAG1, p30, SRS29B) ELISA was validated with se

Frequent blood feeding enables insecticide-treated nets to reduce transmission by mosquitoes that bite predominately outdoors.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of vector control on malaria transmission by long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) depends on the vectors entering houses to blood feed and rest when people are inside houses. In the Solomon Islands, significant reductions in malaria have been achieved in the past 20 years with insecticide-treated bed nets, IRS, improved diagnosis and treatment with artemisinin combination therapies; despite the preference of the primary vector, Anopheles farauti, to feed outdoors and early in the evening and thereby avoid potential exposure to

Late-life effects of chronic methamphetamine exposure during puberty on behaviour and corticostriatal mono-amines in social isolation-reared rats.

Chronic methamphetamine (MA) abuse results in an acute psychosis indistinguishable from paranoid schizophrenia. However, less is known of the interaction between MA use and environmental insults, and how this contributes to late-onset psychopathology. Using social isolation rearing (SIR), a neurodevelopmental animal model of schizophrenia, we investigated the association between changes in corticostriatal mono-amines and putative behaviours related to MA-induced psychosis in isolation and group-housed rats following chronic MA or saline exposure. Weaned male offspring of MA-naive female Wistar

Surgical management of Bell's palsy.

OBJECTIVES: Incomplete return of facial motor function and synkinesis continue to be long-term sequelae in some patients with Bell's palsy. The aim of this report is to describe a prospective study in which a well-defined surgical decompression of the facial nerve was performed in a population of patients with Bell's palsy who exhibit the electrophysiologic features associated with poor outcomes. In addition, management issues related to Bell's palsy including herpes simplex virus typel etiology, the natural history, electrodiagnostic testing, and efficacy of surgical strategies are reviewed.

Shelter Facilities And Their Role In Controlling Free-Roaming Dog Population In Abruzzo Region: A Pilot Study.

The aim of this pilot study is to identify standardised indicators useful for evaluating shelter performance in the Abruzzo region, central Italy. Data on animals admitted in 2023 and 2024 were extracted from the National Information System for Companion Animals (SINAC). A total of 2,252 dogs were analysed (1,077 in 2023 and 1,175 in 2024), and 18 active facilities were identified, with a mean capacity of 218 dogs per shelter. Most facilities had a medium (between 100 and 200 animals) or large (>200 places) capacity, while five were small (<100 places). Eight facilities (44%) were privately ma

Global lifetime prevalence of schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Currently, studies on the lifetime prevalence of schizophrenia in the general population have not been updated or limited to a single country or region. The lifetime prevalence of schizophrenia may differ in other populations with certain relevant influencing factors or conditions. Globally, there is a lack of meta-analyses focusing on the lifetime prevalence of schizophrenia in specific populations. This study aims to determine the lifetime prevalence of schizophrenia in the general population, homeless populations, offenders, populations with comorbid mental disorders, population

Exploring strategies and approaches to improve end-of-life care services for people experiencing homelessness: a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: As a socially disadvantaged group, people experiencing homelessness face numerous difficulties and challenges in accessing end-of-life (EOL) care. Existing strategies often fail to meet their needs, with evident deficiencies in workforce allocation, financial support, and service coverage, as well as a lack of consideration for their unique circumstances. OBJECTIVE: This study synthesizes published qualitative research to explore the expectations and needs of people experiencing homelessness in EOL care, as well as the perspectives of service providers. Its aim is to identify effec

Effects of stocking density on growth, physiological, and puberty responses of replacement beef heifers reared in drylots.

This experiment evaluated growth, physiological responses, and puberty attainment in heifers reared in drylots with different stocking densities. A total of 240 heifers (75% Angus × 25% Brahman) were used. Heifers were ranked by age (270 ± 1 d), body weight (BW on day -3; 232 ± 2 kg) and temperament score on day 0, and assigned to drylot pens with: 1) 14 m2/heifer (HDENS), 2) 28 m2/heifer (MDENS), 3) 42 m2/heifer (LDENS), or to pastures with 1380 m2/heifer (CON). Each pen or pasture (n = 6/treatment) housed 10 heifers. Negligible forage was available for CON, and all treatments received the sa

Youth Homelessness in Denver, Colorado: 2017-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is a public health crisis in the United States, yet homelessness prevalence, especially among children and youth, is not well understood. In this study, we use an indirect estimation method known as multiple systems estimation to further evaluate prevalence of youth experiencing homelessness in Denver, Colorado. METHODS: We performed a multiple systems estimation ("capture-recapture") analysis to estimate annual homelessness among youth aged 14 to 17 years in the city and county of Denver, Colorado from 2017 to 2021. We used 3 citywide datasets linked at the individua

Digital exclusion and people experiencing homelessness: implications for opioid use disorder care.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are at increased risk of adverse consequences from opioid use disorder and other health conditions yet face multiple structural and personal barriers to accessing care. The expansion of digitized health and social care services may have improved access and efficiency of services to many in the general population but at the cost of further marginalizing PEH. Current digital exclusion mitigation strategies may not be sufficiently nuanced to address the deeply complex and challenging circumstances of PEH lives. RECENT FINDINGS: Providing

"Making a homeless person even more homeless … it's a necessary evil": The health and safety complexities of service restrictions as perceived by emergency shelter staff.

Service restrictions involve people experiencing homelessness being banned from an emergency shelter in response to a violation of program policies. Their use can be a pathway into unsheltered homelessness and reliance on other institutional services. However, the prevalence of service restriction use and the perspectives of shelter staff toward the practice are unknown. Accordingly, this mixed methods study used a one-phase QUAL(quan) embedded design to examine the reasons for implementing service restrictions, as recorded by shelter staff in administrative data and their perceptions of the p

Programmes for people who are homeless and have severe mental illness in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

Homelessness and severe mental illness are inter-related issues, the co-occurrence of which leads to poor outcomes for affected individuals. Evidence for effective interventions in high-income countries is accruing, but little is known about how to intervene in the diverse sociocultural contexts of low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). The aim of this systematic review was to synthesise peer-reviewed and grey literature on programmes for people experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness in LMICs. We synthesised effects, programme components, and implementation strategies. We

The intersections of palliative care and homelessness in social policy: A content analysis of Canadian policy documents.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care for people experiencing homelessness (PEH) is a social issue of increasing importance. Policymakers are best positioned to lead societal responses by naming the issue in policy documents, allocating resources to address palliative care for PEH, and creating frameworks or guiding principles to inform action. This study aims to examine how, if at all, policymakers in Canada are identifying and addressing the issue of palliative care for diverse PEH in policies and frameworks governing the palliative care and/or homelessness sectors. METHODS: We conducted a content an

Incorporating the Enclosure MonitoR Use (EMU) App to ZooMonitor Observations Technical Report.

Welfare audits that contain behavior and enclosure use assessments are commonly used in zoos and aquaria. However, the two components are often used separately from one another, and many enclosure use studies are limited by analytical problems, despite the fact that enclosure use indices such as Entropy, modified Spread of Participation Index, and Electivity Index are available. The dawning of behavior monitoring apps has facilitated zoo behavioral research, but some of the original challenges experienced when analyzing enclosure use remain. There is a need, therefore, to make enclosure use in

Experimental hut resting and entrance behaviour of Anopheles darlingi from Zungarococha, a malaria endemic community in Loreto, Northern Peruvian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles darlingi is a primary malaria vector in the Peruvian Amazon, yet characterization of behavioural traits contributing to human-vector contact is limited. Additionally, studies comparing key behaviours of wild-type to colonized An. darlingi populations are minimal. This study compared resting and entry behaviour between these two types of populations. Specific objectives were to use experimental huts to (1) evaluate and compare indoor resting behaviours of wild-type and colonized An. darlingi populations; (2) quantify An. darlingi house entry rates into interception traps i

In this paper, we explore the reasons behind the limited presence of psychologists in addressing homelessness in France, despite the well-documented mental health needs. We examine how the social sciences have contributed to advancements in supporting people experiencing homelessness, contrasting with the historical lack of research from psychology on this issue. We also discuss the compartmentalization between the medical and social sectors, creating barriers to mental health care accessibility and limiting psychological interventions. This article concludes by highlighting recent strides in
