Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening in India: Insights from National Family Health Survey-5 Data.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer, one of the commonest malignancies, can be prevented and cured through early diagnosis. Screening plays an important role in its control strategy, and India has dedicated strategies to its implementation. However, screening uptake is low in India. We examined how sociocultural and financial factors affect Indian women's cervical cancer-screening uptake behaviour. METHODS: Cervical cancer screening-uptake and relevant social, cultural, and financial data obtained from round-5 of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) were used for analysis. We examined 399,039 eli

Exploring the acceptability, feasibility and utility of a digital tool for self-reporting perinatal anxiety and depression in urban obstetric and paediatric clinics in India.

BACKGROUND: Common mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, affect 13% to 55% of women during the perinatal period in India. However, high-volume obstetric clinics often lack resources for routine mental health assessment. Digital tools could address this gap by facilitating maternal mental health screening. AIM: This study evaluates the feasibility, acceptability and utilization of digital self-reporting for perinatal anxiety and depression in two urban obstetric and paediatric clinics. METHOD: A multilingual digital application was developed for self-assessment using the Patient H

Perceived and internalized smoking stigma among pregnant women: association with smoking reduction, reactance to smoking health warnings, and intention to discuss smoking with health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco is an addictive substance associated with numerous serious health effects during pregnancy. Pregnant women who smoke face considerable social disapproval, which could be a barrier to seeking healthcare and ultimately to smoking cessation. This study explored how perceived stigma (i.e., smokers' beliefs about negative judgments of them) and internalized stigma (i.e., internalization of stigmatizing attitudes toward them) may be associated with smoking reduction during pregnancy, reactions to smoking health warnings, and the intention to discuss smoking with health profession

Research on drug addiction detection based on AR-TSNET with bimodal EEG-NIRS.

Traditional research on drug addiction assessment relies primarily on psychological scales, self-reports from drug users, and subjective judgments from doctors, ands lacks objective physiological indicators and quantitative evaluation. This study introduces a visual trigger paradigm designed to elicit drug cravings in individuals with substance addiction, employing Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) for data acquisition. The dataset comprises recordings from 20 healthy individuals and 36 individuals with drug addiction. A deep learning algorithm named AR-TSNET, wh

Cross-Validation of the Acoustic Roughness Index in German.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to validate the Acoustic Roughness Index (ARI) for German-speaking participants by examining its correlation with perceived vocal roughness and its diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing rough from non-rough voices. METHODS: Voice samples from 218 adult speakers (175 with dysphonia and 43 vocally healthy controls) were recorded using a sustained vowel /a:/ and a standardized 27-syllable passage of continuous speech (approximately 3 seconds) concatenated into a single sample per participant. Three experienced raters judged the roughness severity of each samp

Successful Surgical Repair of Complete Duodenal Transection Caused by Horse Kick: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Horse kicks are a rare cause of injury and tend to cause severe complications such as visceral organ injury. Traumatic duodenal injuries are associated with high mortality rates. Furthermore, their reconstructive procedures vary widely and require appropriate on-the-spot judgment by the surgeon. We experienced a case of blunt abdominal trauma with a complete transection of the first portion of the duodenum caused by a horse kick without any associated lesions. A good postoperative course was achieved by trimming the pyloric part of the stomach and performing an end-to-end anastom

Does field of view matter? Assessing its impact on Plus disease diagnosis in retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of field of view (FOV) on the diagnosis of Plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), focusing on how different FOVs influence expert assessments. METHODS: Fundus images from 91 ROP infants were captured using a RetCam, each including the optic disk (OD) and a ridge/demarcation line. Cropped versions with a radius of three disc diameters (3DD) centered on the OD were automatically extracted using a computer-based algorithm. Images were categorized into five (normal, pre-Plus, Plus1, Plus2, Plus3), three (non-Plus, pre-Plus, Plus), or two group

[Translated article] Historical traumatology: The importance of historical knowledge of diseases in current clinical practice-The example of "crippling diseases".

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: This article highlights the importance of historical knowledge in current medical training and practice, particularly in specialties such as Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery. It criticises the increasing technologization of medicine and its growing disconnection from the humanities. The study argues that the historical study of diseases-especially so-called "crippling" diseases, like poliomyelitis and musculoskeletal tuberculosis-provides a deeper understanding of current clinical processes, enhances medical empathy, and promotes a more comprehensive and critical ed

Resting-state networks and anosognosia in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that anosognosia or unawareness of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) may be explained by a disconnection between brain regions involved in accessing and monitoring information regarding self and others. It has been demonstrated that AD patients with anosognosia have reduced connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) and that anosognosia in people with prodromal AD is positively associated with bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), suggesting a possible role of this region in mechanisms of awareness in the early phase of disease.

Discovering what young adults want in electronic interventions aimed at reducing alcohol-related consequences.

BACKGROUND: Despite intervention efforts, negative alcohol-related consequences continue to impact young adults. Most alcohol interventions focus on reducing alcohol consumption; however, previous research indicates that focusing solely on alcohol use may not decrease consequences. Additionally, many alcohol interventions have diminishing engagement, and few are designed with young adults involved in the development process. Drawing on user-centered design, this study sought to understand young adult perceptions, preferences, and needs for electronic interventions specifically aimed at reducin

Clinicians' approach to predicting post-cardiac arrest outcomes for patients enrolled in a United States clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Perceived poor prognosis can lead to withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies (WLST) in patients who might otherwise recover. We characterized clinicians' approach to post-arrest prognostication in a multicenter clinical trial. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with clinicians who treated a comatose post-cardiac arrest patient enrolled in the Influence of Cooling Duration on Efficacy in Cardiac Arrest Patients (ICECAP) trial (NCT04217551). Two authors independently analyzed each interview using inductive and deductive coding. The clinician reported how they arrived at

Obstacles and facilitators to preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: a qualitative study with general practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are the leading cause of non-genetic intellectual disability. The damage caused, although completely preventable, is irreversible and requires lifelong support. General Practitioners have an important role in the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. However, evidence suggests that General Practitioners do not monitor systematically alcohol consumption among pregnant women. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to understand the barriers and motivations of General Practitioners in the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders on Reun

Double Reinforcing Strategy with Perpendicular Plate of Ethmoid in Asian Secondary Unilateral Cleft Rhinoplasty: A Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Deviation and asymmetry relapse after secondary unilateral cleft rhinoplasty with septal extension graft is a common yet serious problem especially among Asian patients. Therefore, finding an effective approach to reduce deformity relapse remains a great challenge to plastic surgeons. METHODS: In this study, authors established finite element models to simulate different nasal cartilage-corrected options and different reinforcing strategies in secondary unilateral cleft rhinoplasty. A load of 0.01N was given to the nasal tip to simulate the soft tissue pressure, while two loads of

Passing distance, speed and perceived risks to the cyclist and driver in passing events.

INTRODUCTION: Up to 38% of crashes between motor vehicles and cyclists involve overtaking and close passes, contributing to a fear of cycling for both current and potential riders. Consequently, most research has focused on the cyclist's perceptions of risk in passing events; but the driver's perceptions may be more influential determinants of passing distances and thus, objective crash risk. METHOD: In an online cross-sectional survey, participants viewed 24 video clips of naturalistic passing events (external view akin to being a following driver) on urban roads in Queensland, Australia and

Engaging young people and their caregivers in support services following harmful sexual behaviors: Qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Harmful sexual behavior (HSB) displayed by children and young people under the age of 18 has been described as developmentally inappropriate, may be harmful towards self or others, or be abusive towards another child, young person, or adult. Early intervention and treatment completion are crucial to cease HSB, reduce impacts and address underlying issues for the child who has displayed HSB. Considerable shame attaches to seeking help for this stigmatized behavior which may result in dropout from support services. Understanding young people and caregivers' experiences of what facili

PURPOSE: Perspectives of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) experiencing pregnancy options counseling (POC) are absent from the literature. This study explores AYA experiences and preferences related to POC to inform best practice guidelines. METHODS: We conducted semistructured phone interviews in 2020-2021 among US-based individuals, 18-35 years old, who experienced a pregnancy less than 20 years of age. We performed qualitative descriptive analysis of positive and negative attributes of AYA's experiences with POC. RESULTS: Fifty participants reported 59 pregnancies (16 parenting, 19 abor

Provider Implicit Bias in Prescribing HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to People Who Inject Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Multiple HIV outbreaks among people who inject drugs (PWIDs) have occurred in the USA since 2015, highlighting the need for additional HIV prevention tools. Despite high levels of need, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is drastically underutilized among PWIDs. Implicit bias toward PWID held by clinicians may impede PrEP scale-up among these underserved patients. This study examined how primary care providers' (PCPs) clinical decisions related to PrEP can be impacted by biases when the patient has a history of substance use. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of PCPs (n = 208).

"He was the one with the gun!" Associative memory for white and black faces seen with weapons.

Much research has found that implicit associations between Black male faces and aggression affect dispositional judgments and decision-making, but there have been few investigations into downstream effects on explicit episodic memory. The current experiment tested whether such implicit associations interact with explicit recognition memory using an associative memory paradigm in younger and older adults. Participants studied image pairs featuring faces (of Black or White males) alongside handheld objects (uncategorized, kitchenware, or weapons) and later were tested on their recognition memory
