Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Belonging to Novel Sequence Types ST473 and ST474 in Wild Birds Inhabiting the Brazilian Amazonia.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an opportunistic human pathogen associated with nosocomial and community-acquired infections. We have conducted a microbiological and genomic surveillance study of broad-spectrum cephalosporin- and carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria colonizing wild birds inhabiting the Brazilian Amazonia. Strikingly, two S. maltophilia strains (SM79 and SM115) were identified in Plain-throated antwren (Isleria hauxwelli) passerines affected by Amazonian fragmentation and degradation. Noteworthy, SM79 and SM115 strains belonged to new sequence types (STs) ST474 and ST473

Metagenomic approach to infer rumen microbiome derived traits of cattle.

Ruminants enable the conversion of indigestible plant material into animal consumables, including dairy products, meat, and valuable fibers. Microbiome research is gaining popularity in livestock species because it aids in the knowledge of illnesses and efficiency processes in animals. In this study, we use WGS metagenomic data to thoroughly characterize the ruminal ecosystem of cows to infer positive and negative livestock traits determined by the microbiome. The rumen of cows from Argentina were described by combining different gene biomarkers, pathways composition and taxonomic information.

Antibiotic treatment of neuro-meningeal infections.

In France, conjugated pneumococcal vaccination has considerably modified the profile of pneumococcal meningitis by eliminating the most virulent strains resistant to beta-lactams. Over recent years, the nationwide pediatric meningitis network of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Group (GPIP) and the National Reference Centre of Pneumococci have not recorded any cases of meningitis due to pneumococcus resistant to third-generation cephalosporins (C3G), even though in 2021, strains with a less favorable profile appeared to emerge. These recent data justify renewal of the 2016 recommendations and

Genetic and Phenotypic Virulence Potential of Non-O1/Non-O139 Vibrio cholerae Isolated from German Retail Seafood.

Non-O1 and non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) can cause gastrointestinal infections in humans. Contaminated food, especially seafood, is an important source of human infections. In this study, the virulence potential of 63 NOVC strains isolated from retail seafood were characterized at the genotypic and phenotypic levels. Although no strain encoded the cholera toxin (CTX) and the toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP), several virulence factors, including the HlyA hemolysin, the cholix toxin ChxA, the heat-stable enterotoxin Stn, and genes coding for the type 3 and type 6 secretion systems, were detected.

Development of Klebsiella pneumoniae Capsule Polysaccharide-Conjugated Vaccine Candidates Using Phage Depolymerases.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important pathogen associated with nosocomial infection and has developed increasing resistance to antibiotics such as extended-spectrum β-lactams and carbapenem. In recent years, K. pneumoniae isolates have emerged as a major cause of global community-acquired infections such as pneumonia and pyogenic liver abscess. Although serotypes K1 and K2 have been identified as the predominant capsular types associated with invasive infections, no K. pneumoniae vaccine is commercially available, probably due to immunogenicity loss in the traditional depolymerization method t

Public health implications of plasmid-mediated quinolone and aminoglycoside resistance genes in Escherichia coli inhabiting a major anthropogenic river of India.

Presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in Escherichia coli inhabiting anthropogenic rivers is an important public health concern because plasmid-mediated AMR genes can easily spread to other pathogens by horizontal gene transfer. Besides β-lactams, quinolones and aminoglycosides are the major antibiotics against E. coli. In the present study, we have investigated the presence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) and aminoglycoside resistance genes in E. coli isolated from a major river of northern India. Our results revealed that majority of the strains were phenotypically

Molecular dissemination of emerging antibiotic, biocide, and metal co-resistomes in the Himalayan hot springs.

Growing resistance among microbial communities against antimicrobial compounds, especially antibiotics, is a significant threat to living beings. With increasing antibiotic resistance in human pathogens, it is necessary to examine the habitats having community interests. In the present study, a metagenomic approach has been employed to understand the causes, dissemination, and effects of antibiotic, metal, and biocide resistomes on the microbial ecology of three hot springs, Borong, Lingdem, and Yumthang, located at different altitudes of the Sikkim Himalaya. The taxonomic assessment of these
