Speech Perception Deficits in Mandarin-Speaking School-Aged Children with Poor Reading Comprehension.

Previous studies have shown that children learning alphabetic writing systems who have language impairment or dyslexia exhibit speech perception deficits. However, whether such deficits exist in children learning logographic writing systems who have poor reading comprehension remains uncertain. To further explore this issue, the present study examined speech perception deficits in Mandarin-speaking children with poor reading comprehension. Two self-designed tasks, consonant categorical perception task and lexical tone discrimination task were used to compare speech perception performance in ch

Mathematical abilities in dyslexic children: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

Dyslexia is characterized by a deficit in language processing which mainly affects word decoding and spelling skills. In addition, children with dyslexia also show problems in mathematics. However, for the latter, the underlying structural correlates have not been investigated. Sixteen children with dyslexia (mean age 9.8 years [0.39]) and 24 typically developing children (mean age 9.9 years [0.29]) group matched for age, gender, IQ, and handedness underwent 3 T MR diffusion tensor imaging as well as cognitive testing. Tract-Based Spatial Statistics were performed to correlate behavioral data

Greek adaptation and validation of the Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life (ASQoL) measure.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic rheumatic disease that has a significant impact on patient's quality of life (QoL). The Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life (ASQoL) questionnaire is a disease-specific patient-reported outcome measure for assessing QoL in AS. While the ASQoL has been adapted for use in 46 countries worldwide, a Greek language version of the measure has not been available and was required for an international clinical trial. AIM: The aim was to develop and assess the psychometric properties of a Greek language version of the ASQoL. METHODS: The adaptatio

New directions in orphan and vulnerable children policy and research: A focus on supporting "suitable" institutions when placement is "necessary" for a child.

As the number of children without parental care continues to increase in resource-poor countries, it is important not to discount institutional care as an option before conclusively assessing whether these structures have systematic negative impacts on the millions of children for which they provide care. An almost universal emphasis and focus on deinstitutionalizing children in the face of the urgent necessity for large-scale measures to care for the global orphaned population puts millions of children at risk of deprivation, degradation, and early death. Deinstitutionalizing children in unde

The time course of neurolinguistic and neuropsychological symptoms in three cases of logopenic primary progressive aphasia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a rare clinical dementia syndrome affecting predominantly language abilities. Word-finding difficulties and comprehension deficits despite relatively preserved cognitive functions are characteristic symptoms during the first two years, and distinguish PPA from other dementia types like Alzheimer's disease. However, the dynamics of changes in language and non-linguistic abilities are not well understood. Most studies on progression used cross-sectional designs, which provide only limited insight into the course of the disease. Here we report the results of a

Analysis of current data on the use of methotrexate in the treatment of pemphigus and pemphigoid.

Methotrexate (MTX) is primarily used in the treatment of malignancies. It has also been used as an immunosuppressive agent in the treatment of pemphigus and pemphigoid. The objective of this study was to determine the role of MTX in the treatment of pemphigus and pemphigoid based on an analysis of the available literature. A retrospective analysis of the English language literature was conducted. The studies included in this analysis were required to fulfil the following inclusion criteria: English language; diagnosis based on histology and immunopathology; minimum of five patients in each ser

[Functional neuroimaging in adults].

A consensus has not been reached on the proper role of the different functional neuroimaging techniques available for the exploration of drug-resistant partial epilepsy, particularly in preparation for surgery. Several studies have suggested the potential contribution of positron emission tomography (PET) with [18F]-fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG), [11C]-flumazenil (FMZ), or [11C]-alpha-methyl-tryptophane (AMT), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to measure ictal cerebral blood flow, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of language a

Pancreatitis associated with neuroendocrine (islet cell) tumors of the pancreas.

BACKGROUND: The association of pancreatitis with neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas is uncommon, whereas its association with exocrine pancreatic cancer is well recognized. Since the latter, but not the islet cell tumor, is thought to originate within the ductal system, it is not surprising that pancreatitis is less likely to result from the islet cell tumor. The senior author has recently noted that the first recognizable indication of an islet cell carcinoma may be one or more discrete attacks of acute pancreatitis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Acute pancreatitis, resulting from an islet cell tu

Therapeutic relationships in aphasia rehabilitation: Using sociological theories to promote critical reflexivity.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic relationships are fundamental in aphasia rehabilitation, influencing patient experience and outcomes. While we have good understandings of the components of therapeutic relationships, there has been little exploration of how and why therapists construct and enact relationships as they do. Sociological theories may help develop nuanced understanding of the values, assumptions and structures that influence practice, and may facilitate critical reflexivity on practice. AIMS: To explore the potential for theoretical approaches from outside speech-language therapy to enable

Truncating mutations in NRXN2 and NRXN1 in autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia.

Growing genetic evidence is converging in favor of common pathogenic mechanisms for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), intellectual disability (ID or mental retardation) and schizophrenia (SCZ), three neurodevelopmental disorders affecting cognition and behavior. Copy number variations and deleterious mutations in synaptic organizing proteins including NRXN1 have been associated with these neurodevelopmental disorders, but no such associations have been reported for NRXN2 or NRXN3. From resequencing the three neurexin genes in individuals affected by ASD (n = 142), SCZ (n = 143) or non-syndromic

Intragenic rearrangements in NRXN1 in three families with autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, and speech delay.

NRXN1 is highly expressed in brain and has been shown recently to be associated with ASD, schizophrenia, cognitive and behavioral abnormalities, and alcohol and nicotine dependence. We present three families, in whom we identified intragenic rearrangements within NRXN1 using a clinical targeted oligonucleotide array CGH. An approximately 380 kb deletion was identified in a woman with Asperger syndrome, anxiety, and depression and in all four of her children affected with autism, anxiety, developmental delay, and speech delay but not in an unaffected child. An approximately 180 kb tandem duplic

Service Providers' Experiences and Challenges in Teaching Writing to Students Using Augmentative and Alternative Communication in Three Schools.

PURPOSE: Learning how to spell and share ideas through written expression is an important life skill for all individuals, including those with minimal or no speech, who may use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Teaching spelling and the development of written expression with individuals who need or use AAC is underexplored. The current study aimed to better understand the current state of service providers' experiences with teaching spelling and writing to students who use AAC, focusing on the lived experiences, current barriers, and perspectives of service providers who curren

Four-year follow-up to a home-visiting intervention to promote early childhood development and prevent family violence in rural Rwanda: the Sugira Muryango cluster randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Sugira Muryango (SM) is a home-visiting intervention designed to promote early childhood development (ECD) and prevent violence in families with young children living in extreme poverty in rural Rwanda. METHODS: We present 4-year follow-up data collected in 2022 in n=1009 households (93%) from a cluster randomised trial. We compare outcomes in SM and usual care (UC) families using mixed-effect models. Results are reported as the average difference in change over time in the SM versus UC group for longitudinal outcomes and the average difference in SM versus UC groups for new outco

A Review of Early Childhood Caries: Risk Factors, Management, and Policy Recommendations.

Initially, the American Academy of Pedodontics and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) jointly addressed severe tooth decay related to bottle use by issuing a statement on Nursing Bottle Caries. However, over the next two decades, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) expanded its understanding, recognising that early childhood caries (ECC) resulted from various inadequate feeding practices, leading to the adoption of the broader term "ECC" to better reflect its complex causes. This review discusses ECC: its prevalence, risk factors, effects, prevention, early detection, and

Differential cognitive and behavioral development from 6 to 24 months in autism and fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Specifying early developmental differences among neurodevelopmental disorders with distinct etiologies is critical to improving early identification and tailored intervention during the first years of life. Recent studies have uncovered important differences between infants with fragile X syndrome (FXS) and infants with familial history of autism spectrum disorder who go on to develop autism themselves (FH-ASD), including differences in brain development and behavior. Thus far, there have been no studies longitudinally investigating differential developmental skill profiles in FXS
