Rapid increase in body surface area of growing zebrafish larvae (Danio rario) is partially accomplished by asynthetic fission of superficial epithelial cells (SECs) of the skin. There are two cycles of this atypical form of cell division which is unaccompanied by DNA replication; resulting in cells with a variable DNA content. Here, electron microscopy of basal epithelium cells that give rise to these SECs in zebrafish larvae shows aggregation of mitochondria around the nucleus and the formation of nucleus-mitochondria membrane contact sites. Membrane aggregates appear in the lumen of the nucl

The species of the genus Trichinella are etiological agents distributed all over the world and are able to infect mammals, birds, and reptiles. Trichinella spiralis is the species most adapted to domestic and wild pigs and is also the most important etiological agent of trichinellosis. The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a nocturnal omnivorous mammal belonging to the Suidae family. S. scrofa has a great appetite and its diet includes a variety of small prey such as mice, rats, and other rodents, as well as carcasses of larger animals. The aim of this study was the identification and the molecular ch

Loeffler's syndrome is a rare, benign respiratory disease usually associated with peripheral eosinophilia, first described by Wilhelm Loeffler in 1932. It is caused by the larvae of helminths such as hookworms, Ascaris, and Strongyloides that transmigrate through the lungs during the active phase of infection. We present a case of a 53-year-old man who complained of a productive cough with intermittent hemoptysis and left-sided posterior chest pain. Initial evaluation revealed ground-glass opacity in the left upper lobe on chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan, with laboratory results

The most important contribution of forensic entomology is the estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) or time since death. The forensic entomologist assumes that the biological clock of necrophagous insects that develop by feeding on cadaver tissues begins when the victim's biological clock is turned off. However, tissues can be invaded while the host is still alive (called myiasis), so the period of activity of necrophagous insects would not be indicative of PMI. The aim of this work was, through the presentation of a case report, to highlight the importance of expertise in the identifica

Early diagnosis of trichinellosis is still difficult because of the lack of specific symptoms and limited window for serological detection. Here we established an assay based on tracing phosphate ions generated during loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) to detect Trichinella spiralis DNA in rat feces during its early stage of infection. By targeting a 1.6-kb repetitive element of Tri. spiralis, the assay was able to detect Tri. spiralis DNA in the feces of all infected rats as early as 1 day postinfection (dpi). The positive detection lasted to 7 dpi in the rats infected with 250 mus

Ancylostoma ceylanicum is recognized as the only zoonotic hookworm species that is able to mature into adult stage in the human intestine. While human infections caused by this hookworm species have been reported from neighboring countries and this hookworm is prevalent in dogs in Vietnam, human infection has never been reported in Vietnam. The present study, therefore, aimed to identify human infections with A. ceylanicum in Vietnam. A total of 526 fecal samples from the residents in Long An Province were collected and the presence of hookworm eggs was detected by the Kato-Katz method. The re

Myiasis is a rare disease caused by infestation of tissue by larvae of flies. Oral myiasis is still rare and unique owing to the fact that the oral cavity rarely provides a necessary habitat for a larval life cycle. We discuss the definition, etiology, predisposing factors, classification, and management of myiasis. We hereby report a rare case of oral myiasis in a 75-year-old female with a history of maxillofacial trauma. She complained of pain in the lower lip and commissure region on the left side through which numerous live maggots (larvae) were seen crawling out. Postremoval of approximat

BACKGROUND: Furuncular myiasis is a parasitic infection of a live mammal by fly larvae commonly seen in Africa. However, with an increase in international tourism, there is a significant rise in exotic infection in non-endemic areas which can pose a diagnostic challenge to doctors and potentially lead to delay in treatment. From the current literature, only 12 cases were reported in the UK.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report an unusual case of multiple abscesses in a 32-year-old white British woman presenting to our Emergency department in the UK after returning from a holiday in The Gambia, West A

Novel indices were developed representing estimated stages in the mosquito life cycle and its ecology, and informed with meteorological data. We used descriptive statistics to identify relationships between meteorological/ecological trends and peak infection rates (IRs), and mixed model linear regression to identify meteorological/ecological trends that were significantly associated with increases in mosquito IRs. Results showed increased mean weekly temperature as a significant driver of increased IRs between 2002 and 2006 during oviposition (the trapping week); the gonotrophic cycle; the egg

To know the infection status of helminths in primary schoolchildren of southern parts of Vietnam, we performed an epidemiological study in Krong Pac district, Dak Lak Province, Vietnam. A total of 1,206 stool specimens were collected from ethnic Ede schoolchildren in 4 primary schools in 2015 and examined by the Kato-Katz technique. In addition, stool cultures were done by the Harada-Mori method to obtain hookworm larvae and then to clarify the species of hookworms infected. The results showed that the helminth infection rate was 25.0%, including 2.0% Ascaris lumbricoides, 0.33% Trichuris tric

A survey was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of intestinal parasites from various species of birds housed in a zoological garden in Egypt. A total of 72 faecal samples were collected randomly from studied birds. It was discovered that 63.9% were infected with at least one intestinal parasites, with 27.8% positive for helminths and 36.1% positive with protozoa. Coprological analysis revealed that the fecal samples were infected with different parasite species including 6 nematode eggs or larvae namely Ascaridia spp. (4.1%), Heterakis spp. (8.3%), Capillaria spp. (5.6%), Contracaecum sp

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that causes human strongyloidiasis. The disease ranges from asymptomatic to severe forms, which are often fatal in immunocompromised individuals. Laboratory diagnosis is challenging owing to limitations in the use of conventional parasitological techniques. The present study aimed to evaluate the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using infective larvae of S. venezuelensis as an antigen for the immunodiagnosis of human strongyloidiasis in immunocompromised patients.
METHODS: Serum and stool samples from 200 immunocompromised patients (H

Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) is a condition caused by infective larvae (cercariae) of a species-rich group of mammalian and avian schistosomes. Over the last decade, it has been reported in areas that previously had few or no cases of dermatitis and is thus considered an emerging disease. It is obvious that avian schistosomes are responsible for the majority of reported dermatitis outbreaks around the world, and thus they are the primary focus of this review. Although they infect humans, they do not mature and usually die in the skin. Experimental infections of avian schistosomes in m

European foulbrood is a contagious bacterial disease of honey bee larvae. Studies have shown that the intestinal bacteria of insects, including honey bees, act as probiotic organisms. Microbial flora from the gut of the Japanese honey bee, Apis cerana japonica F. In patients with immunosuppressive disorders, S. stercoralis infection may develop into a hyperinfection syndrome which, on rare occasions, may be a life-threatening condition. Therapy of S. stercoralis infection with thiabendazole has been limited, due to its numerous side effects, and has been replaced by albendazole and ivermectin. The present case report describes a case of Strongyloides Hyperinfection Syndrome (SHS) in a patient with Hansen's disease and lack of response to first-line anthelmintic treatment. A 38 year-old man was diagnosed as having borderline lepromatous leprosy. He deve

This is a report of lesions associated with the nematodes (Anisakidae) from the stomach of ringed seals (Pusa hispida). On thirty one examined ringed seals from Arviat, thirteen were infected by 1 to 24 anisakids. Identification of nematodes from their stomachs showed two species; Contracaecum osculatum (sensu lato) (79 specimens) and Pseudoterranova decipiens (sensu lato) (11 specimens). In the gastric sections with parasites, larvae and adults of nematodes were present mainly in the fundic portion of the stomach. The anterior parts of the nematodes were embedded in mucosa and submucosa. Anis

Ficopomatus enigmaticus, a euryhaline tube-building polychaete worm with a subtropical to temperate distribution, is an increasingly problematic fouling organism. In this study, laboratory protocols for maintaining adult broodstock, destructive spawning, larval culture and a settlement bioassay were developed. The method routinely yielded approximately 200 larvae per spawning adult. The mean number of eggs released by females was 1517 and the mean number of spermatozoids per male was 4.425 × 10(6). Fertilisation success, using an initial concentration of 2.5 × 10(6) spermatozoids and 45 eggs m

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the vector agent responsible for the transmission of yellow fever and dengue fever viruses to over 80 million people in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Exhaustive efforts have lead to a vaccine candidate with only 30% effectiveness against the dengue virus and failure to protect patients against the serotype 2. Hence, vector control remains the most viable route to dengue fever control programs. We have synthesized a class of 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives whose most biologically active compounds exhibit potent activity against Aedes aegypti larvae (c
