Potentiometric Electronic Tongue for the Evaluation of Multiple-Unit Pellet Sprinkle Formulations of Rosuvastatin Calcium.

Sprinkle formulations represent an interesting genre of medicinal products. A frequent problem, however, is the need to mask the unpleasant taste of these drug substances. In the present work, we propose the use of a novel sensor array based on solid-state ion-selective electrodes to evaluate the taste-masking efficiency of rosuvastatin (ROS) sprinkle formulations. Eight Multiple Unit Pellet Systems (MUPSs) were analyzed at two different doses (API_50) and (API_10), as well as pure Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) as a bitter standard. Calcium phosphate-based starter pellets were coated

Bitter flavors and bitter compounds in foods: identification, perception, and reduction techniques.

Bitterness is one of the five basic tastes generally considered undesirable. The widespread presence of bitter compounds can negatively affect the palatability of foods. The classification and sensory evaluation of bitter compounds have been the focus in recent research. However, the rigorous identification of bitter tastes and further studies to effectively mask or remove them have not been thoroughly evaluated. The present paper focuses on identification of bitter compounds in foods, structural-based activation of bitter receptors, and strategies to reduce bitter compounds in foods. It also

A modified BCG with depletion of enzymes associated with peptidoglycan amidation induces enhanced protection against tuberculosis in mice.

Mechanisms by which Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) evades pathogen recognition receptor activation during infection may offer insights for the development of improved tuberculosis (TB) vaccines. Whilst Mtb elicits NOD-2 activation through host recognition of its peptidoglycan-derived muramyl dipeptide (MDP), it masks the endogenous NOD-1 ligand through amidation of glutamate at the second position in peptidoglycan side-chains. As the current BCG vaccine is derived from pathogenic mycobacteria, a similar situation prevails. To alleviate this masking ability and to potentially improve efficacy

Contribution of the eye and of opn4xa function to circadian photoentrainment in the diurnal zebrafish.

The eye is instrumental for controlling circadian rhythms in mice and human. Here, we address the conservation of this function in the zebrafish, a diurnal vertebrate. Using lakritz (lak) mutant larvae, which lack retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), we show that while a functional eye contributes to masking, it is largely dispensable for the establishment of circadian rhythms of locomotor activity. Furthermore, the eye is dispensable for the induction of a phase delay following a pulse of white light at CT 16 but contributes to the induction of a phase advance upon a pulse of white light at CT21. A Step Toward Precision Audiology: Individual Differences and Characteristic Profiles From Auditory Perceptual and Cognitive Abilities.

Older adults with normal hearing or with age-related hearing loss face challenges when listening to speech in noisy environments. To better serve individuals with communication difficulties, precision diagnostics are needed to characterize individuals' auditory perceptual and cognitive abilities beyond pure tone thresholds. These abilities can be heterogenous across individuals within the same population. The goal of the present study is to consider the suprathreshold variability and develop characteristic profiles for older adults with normal hearing (ONH) and with hearing loss (OHL). Auditor

A deep learning based dual encoder-decoder framework for anatomical structure segmentation in chest X-ray images.

Automated multi-organ segmentation plays an essential part in the computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) of chest X-ray fluoroscopy. However, developing a CAD system for the anatomical structure segmentation remains challenging due to several indistinct structures, variations in the anatomical structure shape among different individuals, the presence of medical tools, such as pacemakers and catheters, and various artifacts in the chest radiographic images. In this paper, we propose a robust deep learning segmentation framework for the anatomical structure in chest radiographs that utilizes a dual enc

Experimental Investigation of Acoustic Features to Optimize Intelligibility in Cochlear Implants.

Although cochlear implants work well for people with hearing impairment in quiet conditions, it is well-known that they are not as effective in noisy environments. Noise reduction algorithms based on machine learning allied with appropriate speech features can be used to address this problem. The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of acoustic features in such algorithms. Acoustic features are extracted from speech and noise mixtures and used in conjunction with the ideal binary mask to train a deep neural network to estimate masks for speech synthesis to produce enhanced sp

Efficacy of chlorhexidine/herbal formulation for microbial reduction in aerosol generated following ultrasonic scaling - A double-blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonic scaling is a potential source of aerosol contamination in dental clinics. The two primary sources of microbial load in aerosols are from the oral cavity and dental unit water line. Literature evidence suggest that the use of preprocedural mouth rinse reduce the bacterial load in aerosol generated during ultrasonic scaling. AIM: The aim of the study is to assess the comparative efficacy of reduction in viable bacteria in the aerosol at patient's chest area, doctor's mask area and two feet beside the patient following use of chlorhexidine/herbal formulation diluted in the

Incongruent affect in early childhood: Neurobiological markers and links to psychopathology.

Researchers have long investigated emotion-related facial expressions, such as smiling and frowning, to further the field's understanding of behavior, emotions, and psychopathology. Fewer studies have examined incongruent affect; facial expressions that do not match internal emotional experiences (e.g., smiling during frustration). Although not extensive, current accounts of incongruent affect in early childhood have assumed that these expressions indicate masking, an active regulatory process. Thus, many researchers contend that incongruent affect represents an adaptive emotion regulation str

A pipeline for automated deep learning liver segmentation (PADLLS) from contrast enhanced CT exams.

Multiple studies have created state-of-the-art liver segmentation models using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) such as the V-net and H-DenseUnet. Oversegmentation however continues to be a problem. We set forth to address these limitations by developing a an automated workflow that leverages the strengths of different DCNN architectures, resulting in a pipeline that enables fully automated liver segmentation. A Pipeline for Automated Deep Learning Liver Segmentation (PADLLS) was developed and implemented that cascades multiple DCNNs that were trained on more than 200 CT scans. First
