Effects of outdoor activity time, screen time, and family socioeconomic status on physical health of preschool children.

OBJECTIVE: Experienced 3 years of pandemic-induced home life, in the post-epidemic period, preschoolers in China are falling short of the World Health Organization's standards for screen time and outdoor activities. This notably impacts their physical well-being. The study aims to probe the associations between screen time, outdoor activities, and the physical health of preschoolers, offering insights to shape interventions targeting myopia and obesity prevention in children. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Guangdong Province, involving a representative sample of 23,992 pres

Managing anxiety in men undergoing surveillance in the NHS abdominal aortic aneurysm screening programme: A survey of screening staff in England.

BACKGROUND: AAA is an enlargement in the aorta that can increase in size and rupture. In England, the National Health Service (NHS) AAA Screening Programme offers screening to all men aged 65 to identify those with an AAA. Men with small or medium sized aneurysm enter surveillance where they receive ultrasound scans annually or every three months respectively. Due to concerns about mortality from AAA rupture, anxiety levels may be high for men and their families and impact on their quality of life. AIM: To obtain the views of staff providing Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening on how be

Harm-to-Benefit Ratio of Fecal Immunochemical Test-Based Screening for Colorectal Cancer Given Prior Fecal Hemoglobin Concentrations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to provide evidence on the harm-to-benefit ratio of fecal immunochemical test (FIT)-based colorectal cancer (CRC) screening by previous fecal hemoglobin (f-Hb) concentrations, as reflected in the number needed to screen (NNS) and number needed to scope (NNSc). METHODS: Participants in up to 4 FIT screening rounds of the Dutch CRC screening program were included. The main outcomes of this study were the NNS and NNSc to detect 1 CRC and/or advanced neoplasia (AN) in screening rounds 2, 3, or 4, conditional on previous f-Hb concentrations. Outcomes were comp

Attitudes towards risk-stratified breast cancer screening: a population-based survey among 5,001 Danish women.

BACKGROUND: The individual woman's risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer can now be estimated more precisely, and screening can be stratified accordingly. The risk assessment requires that women are willing to provide a blood test, additional personal information, to know their risk, and alter screening intervals. This study aimed to investigate Danish women's attitudes towards risk-stratified breast cancer screening. METHODS: An online, cross-sectional survey was conducted among Danish women aged 52-67 years. We used logistic regression analyses to assess how personal characteristics we

Effect of Screening for Undiagnosed Atrial Fibrillation on Stroke Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) often remains undiagnosed, and it independently raises the risk of ischemic stroke, which is largely reversible by oral anticoagulation. Although randomized trials using longer term screening approaches increase identification of AF, no studies have established that AF screening lowers stroke rates. OBJECTIVES: To address this knowledge gap, the GUARD-AF (Reducing Stroke by Screening for Undiagnosed Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly Individuals) trial screened participants in primary care practices using a 14-day continuous electrocardiographic monitor to det

U.S. Women with Invasive Cervical Cancer: Characteristics and Potential Barriers to Prevention.

Objectives: Although invasive cervical cancer (ICC) rates have declined since the advent of screening, the annual age-adjusted ICC rate in the United States remains 7.5 per 100,000 women. Failure of recommended screening and management often precedes ICC diagnoses. The study aimed to evaluate characteristics of women with incident ICC, including potential barriers to accessing preventive care. Materials and Methods: We abstracted medical records for patients with ICC identified during 2008-2020 in five U.S. population-based surveillance sites covering 1.5 million women. We identified evidence

Redesigning antenatal care: Prospective use of an implementation framework to establish a population-based multidisciplinary first-trimester screening, assessment and prevention service.

BACKGROUND: Australian rates of adverse obstetric outcomes have improved little despite guidelines recommending history-based screening and intervention. The first trimester provides a unique opportunity to predict and prevent complications, yet population-based screening has failed to be translated into broad clinical practice. AIMS: This study aimed to redesign antenatal care within an Australian public healthcare centre to align with evidence-based maternity care, including population-based first-trimester screening with early initiation of preventative strategies in high-risk pregnancies.

Randomized Trial of Information for Older Women About Cessation of Breast Cancer Screening Invitations.

BACKGROUND: Older women receive no information about why Australia's breast screening program (BreastScreen) invitations cease after 74 years. We tested how providing older women with the rationale for breast screening cessation impacted informed choice (adequate knowledge; screening attitudes aligned with intention). METHODS: In a three-arm online randomized trial, eligible participants were females aged 70-74 years who had recently participated in breast screening (within 5 years), without personal breast cancer history, recruited through Qualtrics. Participants read a hypothetical scenario

Female Sexual Health: Screening and Evaluation.

Female sexual dysfunction is highly prevalent, affecting 30% to 50% of cisgender women globally. Low sexual desire, sexual arousal disorder, and orgasm disorder affect 10% to 20%, 6% to 20%, and 4% to 14% of women, respectively. Dyspareunia or pain with intercourse affects 8% to 22% of women. Universal screening is recommended; and a thorough medical history and physical examination are the foundations of evaluation and assessment. Laboratory tests and imaging are sometimes warranted, but referral to a sexual medicine expert is suggested if the practitioner is unfamiliar or uncomfortable with

Breast cancer patients enrolled in the Swiss mammography screening program "donna" demonstrate prolonged survival.

STUDY GOAL: We compared the survival rates of women with breast cancer (BC) detected within versus outside the mammography screening program (MSP) "donna". METHODS: We merged data from the MSP with the data from corresponding cancer registries to categorize BC cases as within MSP (screen-detected and interval carcinomas) and outside the MSP. We analyzed the tumor stage distribution, tumor characteristics and the survival of the women. We further estimated hazard ratios using Cox-regressions to account for different characteristics between groups and corrected the survival rates for lead-time

Screening for Fabry disease in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy in China: A multicentre and prospective study.

AIMS: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is frequently detected via echocardiography in individuals with Fabry disease (FD), sometimes leading to confusion with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) of other aetiologies. Considering this diagnosis challenge, FD should be included in the list of differential diagnosis for patients presenting with LVH. To address this concern, we conducted a prospective screening study in China, using dried blood spot (DBS) testing, to evaluate patients with unexplained LVH. METHODS: Our study was designed as a nationwide, multicentre prospective investigation. A t
