Reversing Ribot: does regression hold in language of prodromal Alzheimer's disease?

We consider the regression or retrogenesis hypothesis, which argues that order of acquisition in development is reversed in neurodegeneration or pathology. Originally proposed as a regression hypothesis for the study of memory disorders, specifically retrograde amnesia, by Ribot (1881), it has been extended to the study of brain aging and pathology and to language. We investigate this hypothesis in a new study of language development, aging, and pathology. Through interuniversity collaboration using a matched experimental design and task, we compare production of complex sentences containing r

Antidepressant activity of brahmi in albino mice.

CONTEXT: In traditional system of medicine brahmi has been used to enhance memory. Recently it has been reported to have action in psychiatric disorders. With these backgrounds the work has been undertaken to study antidepressant activity of brahmi in albino mice. AIM: To evaluate antidepressant activity of brahmi in experimental models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antidepressant activity was studied in albino mice using forced swimming test (FST), tail suspension test (TST) and shock induced depression (SID). Imipramine (10mg/kg), fluoxetine (30mg/kg) were used as standard drugs and brahmi (

Cognitive and behavioral deficits following bilateral thalamic stroke: a longitudinal study.

We describe behavioral and neuropsychological outcome of a patient (N.S.), who showed a bilateral paramedian thalamic ischemic lesion, with particular reference to the longitudinal evolution of topographical disorientation (TD) and confabulations. We report clinical neuropsychological/behavioral data over a 43-month follow-up. The results show early after the stroke a severe amnesic-confabulatory syndrome with dysexecutive deficits, associated with memory disorders both for visuo-spatial and verbal materials and TD both for known and new places. Behavioral disinhibition and anosognosia for cog

[Differences in the EEG synchrony between healthy children and adolescents and patients with schizophrenia].

In this paper, we have used a method for EEG synchrony estimation (an analysis of correlation synchrony of EEG. EEG recording was performed in a group of children and adolescents, aged 8-15 years, normal group (n=40) and schizophrenic group (n=30). One of the basic features of the integrated EEG picture is the presence of a pathology of extended zones of sharply lowered EEG-synchrony dividing the local and isolated areas in frontal and occipital regions, mainly of normal or sometimes raised synchrony. Also, there were significant correlations of synchrony estimates with memory and attention. T

Caudate infarcts and hemorrhages.

The caudate nucleus (CN) is composed of a head, body and tail. The head of the CN contributes to forming the floor of the lateral ventricle frontal horn. Moreover, the head, which is medially separated by the septum pellucidum extends beyond the anterior part of the thalamus, stroking the telencephalic cortex. The superior part of the head is covered by the knee of the corpus callosum, while the inferior part is below the thalamus and lenticular nucleus, which delimits the internal capsule. CN strokes are classified into hemorrhagic and ischemic. The clinical presentation of CN hemorrhage is o

Structural modulation of dendritic spines during synaptic plasticity.

The majority of excitatory synaptic input in the brain is received by small bulbous actin-rich protrusions residing on the dendrites of glutamatergic neurons. These dendritic spines are the major sites of information processing in the brain. This conclusion is reinforced by the observation that many higher cognitive disorders, such as mental retardation, Rett syndrome, and autism, are associated with aberrant spine morphology. Mechanisms that regulate the maturation and plasticity of dendritic spines are therefore fundamental to understanding higher brain functions including learning and memor

Who fails the Iowa Gambling Test (IGT)? Personality, neuropsychological, and near-infrared spectroscopy findings in healthy young controls.

The Iowa gambling task (IGT) was designed to assess clinically relevant decision-making impairment, yet some studies find high rates of failure in otherwise healthy control groups. The current study examined variables potentially related to IGT failure, including negative affect, intellect, personality, and executive functioning, in a well-screened sample of healthy young adults. In addition, cerebral oxygenation (near-infrared spectroscopy) was assessed. Results indicated that those who failed the IGT had lower estimated intellect, made more commission errors on the 2-back task, and showed le

PPP2R2C, a gene disrupted in autosomal dominant intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) comprises a vast collection of clinically diverse and genetically heterogeneous disorders characterized primarily by central nervous system defects of varying severity with or without additional dysmorphic, metabolic, neuromuscular or psychiatric features. Much progress has been made to elucidate the genetic causes for ID, especially on the X-chromosome. In order to identify autosomal genes involved in ID, patients with a balanced chromosomal rearrangement are a valuable source since the breakpoints may disrupt or deregulate a candidate ID gene(s). Here, we report

Testosterone effects on cognition in health and disease.

Low testosterone is associated with many physical complaints as well as cognitive complaints. This article reviews the neurobiologic connection between gonadal steroids and cognitive functions, and mechanisms by which T may be considered neuroprotective. Studies of hormone replacement therapy in hypogonadal men as well as older men with late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) are reviewed as well as epidemiological studies of endogenous hormones and cognition. Studies examining T treatment in men with memory disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) will also be reviewed. Some but not all studies of an

Abnormal interleukin-7 function in common variable immunodeficiency.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is characterized by low levels of circulating immunoglobulins, leading to frequent infections, particularly of the respiratory tract. Frequently, T-cell abnormalities are observed. Interleukin-7 (IL-7) is involved in the homeostasis of lymphocytes, and may be elevated in lymphopenia. Mutations of genes related to IL-7 may lead to severe immunodeficiency disorders. We report elevated plasma levels of circulating IL-7 in a subgroup of CVID. These patients have increased numbers of circulating CD8+ T cells with decreased apoptosis and a predominance of CC c

Focal retrograde amnesia in neurological disease: a critical review.

The condition of focal retrograde amnesia represents a new and challenging concept to our understanding of human memory disorders. Cases of both permanent and transient focal retrograde amnesia, dating from early clinical descriptions to more recent experimental reports, are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the condition of focal retrograde amnesia does represent a distinct and reliable neurological entity. Four sets of issues are discussed--methodological issues, conceptual issues, anatomical issues and therapeutic issues. Current evidence indicates an important role for temporal lob

Evaluation of higher-level auditory function in children with asymptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Higher-level auditory/cognitive functions were evaluated in 16 children: eight with asymptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections and eight children documented not to have asymptomatic congenital CMV infections. Hearing sensitivity was within normal limits in all subjects. Results in both groups were within the normal range on the screening measures of verbal abilities, visual perception, social behavior, and memory span. In contrast, results of the auditory measures revealed abnormal dichotic speech perception, delayed latencies on auditory brainstem evoked responses, and dispropor

Transient global amnesia: a case-control study.

The clinical findings and laboratory results from 18 patients with clear-cut transient global amnesia (TGA) were compared with the results from 90 nonischemic neurological control patients using case-control analysis. A prior episode of cerebral ischemia, generally in the posterior circulation, was the most significant risk factor for TGA. Other risk factors for cerebrovascular disease were more prominent in the TGA group, but this association became less significant when cerebral ischemia was controlled for. Migraine, epilepsy, and psychiatric disorders were not significantly associated with

Bitropic D3 Dopamine Receptor Selective Compounds as Potential Antipsychotics.

Neuropsychiatric disorders represent a substantial social and health care issue. The National Institutes of Health estimates that greater than 2 million adults suffer from neuropsychiatric disorders in the USA. These individuals experience symptoms that can include auditory hallucinations, delusions, unrealistic beliefs and cognitive dysfunction. Although antipsychotic medications are available, suboptimal therapeutic responses are observed for approximately one-third of patients. Therefore, there is still a need to explore new pharmacotherapeutic strategies for the treatment of neuropsychiatr

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among longer-term prison inmates is a prevalent, persistent and disabling disorder.

BACKGROUND: ADHD is a common and disabling disorder, with an increased risk for coexisting disorders, substance abuse and delinquency. In the present study, we aimed at exploring ADHD and criminality. We estimated the prevalence of ADHD among longer-term prison inmates, described symptoms and cognitive functioning, and compared findings with ADHD among psychiatric outpatients and healthy controls. METHODS: At Norrtälje Prison, we approached 315 male inmates for screening of childhood ADHD by the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS-25) and for present ADHD by the Adult ADHD Self-Report Screener (AS

Disintegrating ipseity: a gerontological exegesis of Alzheimer's disease and relational identity in Alice Munro's fiction.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's is a progressive disorder of the brain that gradually affects memory, personality, behaviour, identity, and interpersonal relationships, particularly among older adults. Alice Munro's novella "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" offers a compelling literary framework for exploring these impacts through narrative gerontology, a lens that emphasizes storytelling's role in shaping identity and relational bonds during ageing and illness. METHOD: This study applies narrative gerontology to analyze Munro's depiction of Alzheimer's, focusing on the experiences of Fiona and Grant

Decrement in sustained attention and working memory in young, treatment-naïve women with polycystic ovary syndrome: Preliminary findings.

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder associated with hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance. Although its reproductive and metabolic consequences are well established, research on the impact of PCOS on cognitive function remains inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the cognitive profiles across multiple domains in young, treatment-naïve patients with PCOS. Method: This cross-sectional study included 35 patients with PCOS (aged 18-35 years) and 30 age-matched healthy controls from Northern India. Participants underwent standardized computer-based ps

Differential effects of Lactobacillus casei in probiotic and paraprobiotic forms on behavioral performance, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cholinergic dysfunction in a streptozotocin-induced model of sporadic Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cholinergic dysfunction. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiota disturbances contribute to AD progression, encouraging the investigation of microbiota-modulating approaches such as probiotics and paraprobiotics. This study evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus casei probiotic and its thermally inactivated paraprobiotic on cognitive, behavioral, oxidative, cholinergic, and inflammatory alterations in a sporadic AD model induced by intracere
