Antipathogenic carbon dots synthesized from fluorescent amino acids and their photodynamic activity.

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) were prepared from essential fluorescent amino acids, such as lysine (Lys), phenylalanine (Phe), tyrosine (Tyr), and tryptophan (Trp) by two routes, microwave and teflon-lined autoclave. The fluorescent properties of these amino acids were significantly improved in their corresponding CD forms, especially for those prepared via the hydrothermal process. A significantly high fluorescent intensity was measured in the emission range of 420-470 nm at the excitation wavelengths of 300-350 nm. While a negatively zeta potential value of - 9.8 ± 2.6 mV was obtained for

Enhancing chlorpyrifos degradation and plant growth through biochar-assisted microbial remediation.

The extensive use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in agriculture has led to persistent soil contamination, posing serious risks to environmental and human health. Developing sustainable, in situ remediation strategies is therefore a priority. This study evaluated an integrated plant-microbe-biochar system for the remediation of CPF-contaminated soils. Indigenous CPF-degrading bacteria were isolated from agricultural soils and screened for degradation efficiency in mineral salts medium (MSM) and soil microcosms. The most efficient isolate, designated C78, was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Kle

Disease-Causing Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targets in Infectious Diseases: Implications for Clinical Management and Public Health.

Infectious diseases remain a major cause of mortality and disability worldwide. This burden is driven, in part, by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the re-emergence of epidemic and pandemic threats, underscoring the need for translational research to address knowledge gaps exposed by recent pandemics. Despite significant advances enabled by antibiotics and antivirals, their effectiveness is increasingly constrained by resistance development, limited pathogen spectra, and prolonged development timelines that fail to keep pace with rapidly shifting epidemiology. Diagnostic limitations impede t

Methylated tirilazad alleviates DSS-induced colitis in mice through reciprocal microbiome-metabolome.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) pathogenesis involves complex interactions between inflammatory reactions, gut dysbiosis, metabolic disruption, and barrier dysfunction. Current therapies primarily target inflammation but fail to correct the underlying dysbiotic ecosystem. We hypothesized that methylated tirilazad (MT), a synthetic 21-aminosteroid with the antioxidant properties of tirilazad, would alleviate colitis by orchestrating a beneficial restructuring of the gut microbiome and its metabolic output. Using a DSS-induced murine colitis model in C57BL/6 mice, we evaluated MT via integrated multi-om

Innovative mycosynthesis of chitosan nanoparticles via bionanofactory Penicillium crustosum: optimization, characterization, and application against building-deteriorating fungus, Trichosporon asahii.

Biocorrosion of building materials is a global challenge that threatens both modern buildings and cultural heritage. This degradation is largely driven by interactions between microbes, particularly fungi, and various gaseous effluents containing nitrogenous, sulfurous, and carbonaceous aerosols from anthropogenic activities, leading to progressive biocorrosion of construction surfaces. Therefore, this study aims to reduce such detrimental effects using chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs). An eco-friendly biosynthesis approach was employed, using the cell-free supernatant of Penicillium sp. strain H

Precision nutrition and food biomanufacturing for space missions: Toward intelligent and bioregenerative life-support systems.

Long-duration spaceflight presents unique physiological and nutritional challenges due to factors such as microgravity, radiation, confinement, and circadian rhythm disruption. These stressors reshape energy metabolism, bone and muscle homeostasis, immune responses, and gut microbiota composition, leading to impaired nutrient absorption and oxidative imbalance. Conventional Earth-based dietary models are inadequate to address such complex interactions, highlighting the need for precise nutritional strategies combined with sustainable in-situ food production systems. This review examines recent

Analysis of different fermentation processes of jujube-hawthorn fermented beverage based on untargeted metabolomics and GC-MS.

In this study, we compared two processes: "Lactobacillus single fermentation 36 h→ inactivation→yeast re-fermentation (InLA)" and "Lactobacillus-yeast simultaneous co-fermentation (LSA)," using jujube and hawthorn composite juice as the substrate. We applied non-targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis to evaluate how sterilization affects quality. The results showed that in LSA, the total acid continued to increase, and levels of total phenolics, tota

Emerging applications of non-thermal ultrasound technology in functional beverages processing, a comprehensive review.

Non-thermal ultrasonication (US) is emerging as a promising process-intensification technology for producing functional beverages (FB) as the conventional thermal processing and additive-reliant preservation methods often compromise thermolabile nutrients, sensory profile, and clean-label appeal of FB. However, evidence regarding the application of US to the processing and preservation of FB matrices remains limited and fragmented, and clear, reproducible guidelines for process optimization and commercial translation are still lacking. This review critically summarizes recent research on the a

Breast-Cancer-Derived Secretomes from MCF-7 Cells Modulate Bacterial Pathogenic Traits.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy among women worldwide, with the luminal A subtype being the most prevalent. Several studies have reported a complex interplay between breast cancer cells and the local microbiome; however, the mechanisms by which tumor cell-secreted factors influence bacterial biological properties remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we established an in vitro model that partially recapitulates the luminal A breast cancer microenvironment by exposing three breast-associated bacterial species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, and

Synergistic Effects of a Microbial Amendment and Crushed Basalt: Soil Geochemical and Microbial Responses.

Over geologic timescales, the natural weathering of silicate minerals in soils and regolith regulates atmospheric CO2. Although this process is slow relative to anthropogenic emissions, several strategies have been proposed to accelerate this process for climate mitigation. These include the application of finely-ground silicate rock to increase mineral surface area (enhanced weathering, EW) and the use of microbes that catalyze mineral dissolution and CO2 biomineralization (microbial carbon dioxide mineralization, MCM). While both approaches show promise, their combined application has rarely

Faecalibacterium prausnitzii ameliorates sepsis-induced acute lung injury via gut-lung axis by regulating arachidonic acid-LXA4-Nrf2-HO-1 pathway and restoring gut microecology.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis-induced acute lung injury (S-ALI) is a life-threatening condition in intensive care units. The gut-lung axis has recently emerged as an important regulator of pulmonary inflammation. However, the role of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (F. prausnitzii) in S-ALI remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing revealed significant gut microbiota dysbiosis in S-ALI patients, characterized by a markedly reduced relative abundance of F. prausnitzii. Moreover, the depletion of this probiotic was associated with increased clinical inflammatory indices a

Genome-based characterization of a multifunctional plant growth-promoting and heavy metal-resistant Escherichia coli FACU2024 isolated from Jatropha rhizosphere.

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of microbial isolates is a valuable tool for mapping the genomes of novel organisms and is helpful for understanding plant-bacteria interactions. The close relationships between bacteria and plants are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems, whether the bacteria reside the plant or in the rhizosphere surrounding its roots. In this study, isolation, characterization, and WGS were performed to identify promising plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) using the rhizospheric soil sample of jatropha tree roots. Out of 100 isolates, six (FACU 2024, 2, 3, 4, 5

From gut-reproductive microbiota to ferroptosis: a comprehensive insight into the molecular-pathogenicity of endometriosis.

Endometriosis (EMS) is a highly heterogeneous chronic gynecological disease characterized by pain, infertility, and relapse, with its etiology and pathogenesis not yet fully elucidated. Traditional theories, including "retrograde menstruation," "implantation theory," and "abnormalities in immune tolerance," struggle to adequately explain the complex lesion behavior, diverse phenotypic characteristics, and accompanying immune-metabolic disorders. In recent years, the key roles of imbalances in the gut and reproductive microbiomes, abnormal iron metabolism, and the newly proposed ferroptosis in

Mechanistic insights into Mfd inhibition by pharmacophore-guided ligands using molecular and steered molecular dynamics simulations.

Antimicrobial resistance remains difficult to control because many bacteria rely on DNA repair pathways that help them survive antibiotic stress. One of the key players in this response is the Mutation Frequency Decline protein (Mfd), a transcription repair coupling factor that supports mutagenesis and persistence. Targeting Mfd therefore represents a promising strategy to limit bacterial evolvability rather than directly inhibiting growth. In this study, we integrate pharmacological screening with microbial resistance mechanisms using a pharmacophore-guided computational framework to identify

A Review on Structural Insights into NLRP3 and NEK7: Domain Architecture, Subcellular Localization, and Their Interaction in Inflammasome Assembly and Signaling.

The NLRP3 inflammasome plays an important role in the innate immune system that mediates caspase-1 activation and the subsequent secretion of the pro inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18 in response to microbial infections and cellular stress. Aberrant activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome has been implicated in a range of inflammatory and metabolic disorders, including cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS), Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis. NLRP3 activation can be triggered by diverse stimuli and involves multiple cellular events, such as ionic flux, mitocho

A Bayesian multivariate spatial point pattern model: application to oral microbiome FISH image data.

Advances in cellular imaging technologies, especially those based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), now allow detailed visualization of the spatial organization of human or bacterial cells. Quantifying this spatial organization is crucial for understanding the function of multicellular tissues or biofilms, with implications for human health and disease. To address the need for better methods to achieve such quantification, we propose a flexible multivariate point process model that characterizes and estimates complex spatial interactions among multiple cell types.
