Association of physical behaviours with sarcopenia in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Physical behaviours (ie, physical activity and sedentary behaviour) might have a role in the development of sarcopenia, although the evidence is unclear. We aimed to explore the association of total and intensity-specific levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with sarcopenia and its components (ie, muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance) in older adults. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis and searched MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to July 26, 2022, for peer-reviewed, observational studies or b

A review on associated factors and management measures for sarcopenia in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and insufficient insulin secretion. Sarcopenia, as a new complication of diabetes, is characterized by the loss of muscle mass and the progressive decline of muscle strength and function in T2DM patients, which has a serious impact on the physical and mental health of patients. Insulin resistance, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic inflammation are common mechanisms of diabetes and sarcopenia. Reasonable exercise training, nutrition supplement, and drug intervention may improv

Development of body composition, lower body physical characteristics and clubhead speed in skilled junior golfers.

BACKGROUND: The physical characteristics of golfers have a strong relationship with the clubhead speed (CHS), which is the main indicator of energy produced during a golf swing. However, perennial observations of development in CHS, physical characteristics, and body composition, and their long-term effects on CHS are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the lower body physical characteristics and body composition parameters and their relationship with clubhead speed during one and over a two-year period in junior golfers. METHODS: Nineteen skilled, male, junior golfers participat

Validity and Reliability of a Load Cell Sensor-Based Device for Assessment of the Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Test.

In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in the number of devices developed to measure or estimate physical exercise. However, before these devices can be used in a practical and research environment, it is necessary to determine their validity and reliability. The purpose of this study is to test the validity and reliability of a load cell sensor-based device (LC) for measuring the peak force (PFr) and the rate of force development (RFD) during the isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) test, using a force plate (FP) as the gold standard. Forty-two undergraduate sport science students

Validity and reliability of an app-based medical device to empower individuals in evaluating their physical capacities.

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength are valid markers of health and strong predictors of mortality and morbidity. The tests used to measure these variables require in-person visits with specialized equipment and trained personnel-leading to organizational constraints both for patients and hospitals, and making them difficult to implement at a large scale. In this context, technologies embedded in smartphones offer new opportunities to develop remote tests. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of MediEval, a newly developed app-based medical d

Fatty acid amides as potential circulating biomarkers for sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is characterized by a progressive decrease in skeletal muscle mass and function with age. Given that sarcopenia is associated with various metabolic disorders, effective metabolic biomarkers for its early detection are required. We aimed to investigate the metabolic biomarkers related to sarcopenia in elderly men and perform experimental studies using metabolomics. METHODS: Plasma metabolites from 142 elderly men, comprising a sarcopenia group and an age-matched control group, were measured using global metabolome profiling. Muscle and plasma samples from an aging mouse

[Study on the occurrence of adverse health events in nursing homes : contributions from the Liège SENIOR cohort].

The SENIOR study followed a cohort of older people living in nursing homes for 8 years and examined their adverse health events. The results were analysed after 1, 3 and 8 years to identify predictive factors and improve care. After 1 year, residents with poorer motor and muscle function had a higher incidence of adverse health events such as death and falls. Sarcopenia predicted mortality, while poor physical performance was associated with falls. At 3 years, poor nutritional status and poor balance were important predictors of mortality, falls and loss of independence. At 8 years, younger ag
