Persistent SARS-CoV-2 RNA Shedding Without Evidence of Infectiousness: A Cohort Study of Individuals With COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: To better understand severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) shedding and infectivity, we estimated SARS-CoV-2 RNA shedding duration, described participant characteristics associated with the first negative rRT-PCR test (resolution), and determined if replication-competent viruses was recoverable ≥10 days after symptom onset. METHODS: We collected serial nasopharyngeal specimens from 109 individuals with rRT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 in Utah and Wisconsin. We calculated viral RNA shedding resolution probability using the Kaplan-Meier estimator and evaluated chara

Nasal Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma in the Pediatric Population: Literature Review and Report of Midline Presentation.

BACKGROUND: Congenital midline nasal masses are rare anomalies and are typically benign nasal dermoid sinus cysts (NDSCs). Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMSs) are even less common, and only a fraction affect sites like the external nose, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and paranasal sinuses. We review the clinical presentation and treatment of nasal, nasopharyngeal, and paranasal RMSs and report the first documented midline presentation. METHODS: We queried PubMed for articles with titles containing the terms rhabdomyosarcoma or sarcoma botryoides and nose, nasal, paranasal, sinonasal, nasopharynx, or nasoph

Gross morphological and morphometric study of the upper respiratory system of the African giant rat (Cricetomys gambianus, Waterhouse 1840).

The nose is a structurally and functionally complex organ in the upper respiratory tract. It not only serves as the principal organ for the sense of smell, but also functions to efficiently filter, warm, and humidify inhaled air before the air enters the more delicate distal tracheobronchial airways and alveolar parenchyma of the lungs. Despite the volume of published studies on the biology of rodents, there is no information on the gross upper respiratory morphology of the African giant rat (AGR) in the available literature. Hence, this study aimed to examine the anatomy of the turbinates, th

Host-to-Host Group A Streptococcus Transmission Causes Infection of the Lamina Propria but Not Epithelium of the Upper Respiratory Tract in MyD88-Deficient Mice.

To understand protective immune responses against the onset of group A Streptococcus respiratory infection, we investigated whether MyD88 KO mice were susceptible to acute infection through transmission. After commingling with mice that had intranasal group A Streptococcus (GAS) inoculation, MyD88-/- recipient mice had increased GAS loads in the nasal cavity and throat that reached a mean throat colonization of 6.3 × 106 CFU/swab and mean GAS load of 5.2 × 108 CFU in the nasal cavity on day 7. Beyond day 7, MyD88-/- recipient mice became moribund, with mean 1.6 × 107 CFU/swab and 2.5 × 109 CFU

Paper-based immunoassay based on 96-well wax-printed paper plate combined with magnetic beads and colorimetric smartphone-assisted measure for reliable detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been recognized as a global pandemic outbreak, opening the most severe socio-economic crisis since World War II. Different scientific activities have been emerged in this global scenario, including the development of innovative analytical tools to measure nucleic acid, antibodies, and antigens in the nasopharyngeal swab, serum, and saliva for prompt identification of COVID-19 patients and to evaluate the immune response to the vaccine. The detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva remains a challenge for the lack of sufficient sensitivity. To address this issue,

Repeated loss of consciousness as the first symptom of recurrence of head and neck malignancy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck malignancies rarely cause reflex syncope. Three mechanistic patterns of reflex syncope are known in such patients: carotid sinus syndrome, glossopharyngeal neuralgia syndrome, and parapharyngeal space lesions syncope syndrome. There are few reports describing parapharyngeal space lesions syncope syndrome. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old man with a history of head and neck cancer underwent left lingual resection and left anterior cervical lymph node dissection followed by chemoradiotherapy. Two months later, he experienced his first syncope and was admitted to our hospita

PCV10 elicits Protein D IgG responses in Papua New Guinean children but has no impact on NTHi carriage in the first two years of life.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal colonisation with nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is associated with development of infections including pneumonia and otitis media. The 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) uses NTHi Protein D (PD) as a carrier. Papua New Guinean children have exceptionally early and dense NTHi carriage, and high rates of NTHi-associated disease. Vaccination with PCV10 could potentially reduce NTHi carriage and disease in this population by inducing a NTHi PD immune response. METHODS: Serum and nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from 101 Papua New Guinean chi

SARS-COV-2 screening in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell donors: Implications for the evaluation process and eligibility.

INTRODUCTION: Soon after the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, viral screening by nasopharyngeal swab became mandatory for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) donor eligibility. METHODS: We described our monocenter experience with allogeneic HSC donors from February 1 to the October 31, 2020 to verify whether the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 screening altered the donor eligibility and/or entailed a prolongation of the evaluation process. RESULTS: A total of 21 allogeneic HSC donors were screened during the above-mentioned period upon request by the local transplant physicians or by the It

Clinitest rapid COVID-19 antigen test for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection: A multicenter evaluation study.

OBJECTIVES: RT-PCR assay is the reference method for diagnosis of COVID-19, but it is also a laborious and time-consuming technic, limiting the availability of testing. Rapid antigen-detection tests are faster and less expensive; however, the reliability of these tests must be validated before they can be used widely. The objective of this study was to determine the performance of the Clinitest Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Test (ClinitestRT) (SIEMENS) for SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swab specimens. METHODS: This prospective multicenter study was carried out in three Spanish university hospitals in

Long-term Morphological Changes of the Velum and the Nasopharynx in Patients With Cleft Palate.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate long-term morphological changes in the soft palate length and nasopharynx in patients with cleft palate. We hypothesized that there would be differences in the morphological development of the soft palate and nasopharynx between patients with and without cleft palate and that these developmental changes would negatively affect the soft palate length to pharyngeal depth ratio involved in velopharyngeal closure for patients with cleft palate. DESIGN: Retrospective, case-control study. SETTING: Institutional practice. PATIENTS: Ninety-two patients (Group F) with unila

Lack of Association of Initial Viral Load in SARS-CoV-2 Patients with In-Hospital Mortality.

Controversy exists in the literature regarding the possible prognostic implications of the nasopharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 viral load. We carried out a retrospective observational study of 169 patients, 96 (58.9%) of whom had a high viral load and the remaining had a low viral load. Compared with patients with a low viral load, patients with a high viral load did not exhibit differences regarding preexisting cardiovascular risk factors or comorbidities. There were no differences in symptoms, vital signs, or laboratory tests in either group, except for the maximum cardiac troponin I (cTnI), which was

The absence of coronavirus in expressed prostatic secretion in COVID-19 patients in Wuhan city.

Due to the cellular entry of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) modulated by angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the ACE2 bearing prostate is therefore hypothesized as a susceptible organ to COVID-19. To delineate whether the pathogenic SARS-CoV-2 of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) could be detected in the expressed prostatic secretion (EPS), a total of ten male patients with confirmed COVID-19 were recruited. All patients were stratified into two groups: one group with positive nasopharyngeal swabbing SARS-CoV-2 within 3 days of the EPS taken day (PNS group, n = 3) and the other group
