Submandibular gland excision is traditionally performed via the transcervical approach. In an effort to avoid or reduce visible scarring and nerve injury, diverse innovative surgical trials have been conducted. We report the case of a submandibular gland mass that was endoscopically resected through a thyroidectomy incision. The patient was a 56-year-old woman with a long-standing right-sided submandibular gland mass and a smaller thyroid gland mass that was recently discovered on a routine checkup. The thyroid mass was managed with a total thyroidectomy. The submandibular mass was resected wi

BACKGROUND: Subcortical vascular dementia relates to small-vessel disease and hypoperfusion, resulting in focal and diffuse ischemic white matter lesions. The main target of the disease are the frontal subcortical neural networks. There is no clinical standard definition of the pathology, on the contrary, everyday clinical practice suggests dominant behavioral alterations and dysexecutive syndrome.
METHODS: The aim of this study was to investigate gait disorders, behavioral alteration, and drug intake of a subcortical population with dementia (n = 1155). A complete neuropsychological examinat

Both major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder are the subject of a voluminous imaging and genetics literature. Here, we attempt a comprehensive review of MRI and metabolic PET studies conducted to date on these two disorders, and interpret our findings from the perspective of developmental and degenerative models of illness. Elevated activity and volume loss of the hippocampus, orbital and ventral prefrontal cortex are recurrent themes in the literature. In contrast, dorsal aspects of the PFC tend to display hypometabolism. Ventriculomegaly and white matter hyperintensities are intimatel

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of bipolar disorder in pre-pubertal populations remains difficult and often controversial. Consequently, the clinical and neuropsychological characteristics of mania in the child and adolescent years remain poorly defined. This review provides a clinical account of childhood and adolescent bipolar disorder and compares the neuropsychology and neuroanatomy of young BPD patients compared with adult BPD and childhood syndromes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD).
METHOD: Literature review based on Pubmed searches.
RESULTS: Early

Estradiol, in addition to its participation in neuroendocrine regulation and sexual behavior, has neuroprotective properties. Different types of brain injury induce the expression of the enzyme aromatase in reactive astroglia. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of testosterone and other C19 steroids to estradiol. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of brain aromatase results in marked neurodegeneration after different forms of mild neurodegenerative stimuli that do not compromise neuronal survival under control conditions. Furthermore, aromatase mediates neuroprotective effects of precurso

The tracheobronchial submucosal glands secrete liquid that is important for hydrating airway surfaces, supporting mucociliary transport, and serving as a fluid matrix for numerous secreted macromolecules including the gel-forming mucins. This review details the essential structural elements of airway glands and summarizes what is currently known regarding the ion transport processes responsible for producing the liquid component of gland secretion. Liquid secretion most likely arises from serous cells and is principally under neural control with muscarinic agonists, substance P, and vasoactive

The most common inherited form of hydrocephalus, X linked hydrocephalus (HSAS), is characterised by mental retardation, adducted thumbs, and spastic paraplegia. Genetic analysis has mapped the locus for HSAS to subchromosomal band Xq28 within a region of approximately 2 megabases of DNA. In order to refine the location of the disease gene we have conducted genetic linkage analysis with Xq28 marker loci in four additional HSAS families. A lod score of 4.26 with polymorphic marker DXS52 (St14) confirms the linkage of HSAS to Xq28. Identification of a recombination event between the HSAS gene and

Explicit consolidation of memory, or fixation of declarative belief, appears to be physically represented in changes of synaptic conductances of neurons in the parietal-temporal-occipital association cortex (PTO) of the mammalian forebrain. This fixation of belief in PTO is postulated to be critically dependent on a diffuse reinforcement signal via the inferior temporal cortex (ITC) ultimately caused by an increased output of the CA1 pyramidal cells of hippocampus. Analogous to the reinforcing mechanisms of other forebrain systems, this updating of the connection weights of the neural nets in

Over the past two decades, significant advancements have been achieved in the diagnosis and treatment of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) complex pain. These advances include anatomical studies elucidating the neural innervation mechanisms, research clarifying the impacts of extra-articular factors on SIJ complex pain, and the clinical application of radiofrequency ablation as well as a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical techniques. Nevertheless, a unified standardized protocol for the diagnosis and treatment of SIJ complex pain remains to be established. In 2025, the American Academy of Pain

While multiple step saccades (MSS) are occasionally reported in the healthy population, they are more evident in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Therefore, MSS has been suggested as a biological marker for the diagnosis of PD. However, the lack of clarity on the neural mechanism underlying the generation of MSS largely impedes their application in the clinic. We have proposed recently that MSS are triggered by the discrepancy between desired and executed saccades. Accordingly, brain regions involved in saccadic planning and execution might play a role in the generation of MSS. To test

The main purpose of this paper is to provide information on how to create a convolutional neural network (CNN) for extracting features from EEG signals. Our task was to understand the primary aspects of creating and fine-tuning CNNs for various application scenarios. We considered the characteristics of EEG signals, coupled with an exploration of various signal processing and data preparation techniques. These techniques include noise reduction, filtering, encoding, decoding, and dimension reduction, among others. In addition, we conduct an in-depth analysis of well-known CNN architectures, ca

Accurate paranasal sinus segmentation is essential for reducing surgical complications through surgical guidance systems. This study introduces a multiclass Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) segmentation model by comparing four 3D U-Net variations-normal, residual, dense, and residual-dense. Data normalization and training were conducted on a 40-patient test set (20 normal, 20 abnormal) using 5-fold cross-validation. The normal 3D U-Net demonstrated superior performance with an F1 score of 84.29% on the normal test set and 79.32% on the abnormal set, exhibiting higher true positive rates for

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of persistent facial nerve palsy after middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH).
METHODS: A literature search was conducted for publications within the last 10 years of facial nerve palsy following cerebral circulation embolization procedures.
RESULTS: With inconsistencies between previously believed pathophysiology and clinical features, other mechanisms causing cSDH such as angiogenesis and capillary formation have been proposed. MMA embolization has evolved as a therapeutic approach to reduce recurrence of subdural hemat

Paradoxes are a special form of reasoning leading to absurd inferences in contrast to logical reasoning that is used to reach valid conclusions. A functional MRI (fMRI) study was conducted to investigate the neural substrates of paradoxical and deductive reasoning. Twenty-four healthy participants were scanned using fMRI, while they engaged in reasoning tasks based on arguments, which were either Zeno's like paradoxes (paradoxical reasoning) or Aristotelian arguments (deductive reasoning). Clusters of significant activation for paradoxical reasoning were located in bilateral inferior frontal a

The study of dementia and epilepsy may provide particular insight into behavioural alterations. We describe a rare case of ictal aggressive behaviour in a patient with focal epilepsy associated with a non-dominant dorso-lateral prefrontal lesion. During focal seizures, our patient showed intense agitation and anger, for a long time misinterpreted as psychogenic attacks, which disappeared after epilepsy surgery. The defined anatomical origin of such ictal emotional behaviour is not fully understood, however, the dorso-lateral prefrontal area appears to correlate less frequently with aggressiven

Bats are long-lived animals that show presumed resistance to noise-induced and age-related hearing loss, which has been attributed to their dependence on sound processing for survival. Echolocation and basic auditory functions have been studied extensively in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), an insectivorous microchiropteran species. We conducted hearing tests and analysis of cochlear sensory cells in a group of big brown bats that exhibited anomalies in behavioral sonar tracking experiments and/or lacked neural responses to acoustic stimulation in subcortical auditory nuclei. We show for

Pathological speech, in its many forms, is a symptom of numerous serious diseases affecting millions of people worldwide, including more than 10 million Parkinson patients. Here, a powerful method is proposed for detecting pathological speech, using a two-dimensional (2D) convolutional neural network (CNN). Spectrograms are extracted from voice recordings of healthy and Parkinson diagnosed patients, which are fed into the CNN architecture. The voice samples comprise a subset of the benchmark mobile Parkinson Disease (mPower) study. The proposed model achieves 98% accuracy in Parkinson detectio

Personal space regulation is a key component of effective social engagement. Personal space varies among individuals and with some mental health conditions. Simulated personal space intrusions in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) reveal larger preferred interpersonal distance in that setting. These findings led us to conduct the first test of live interpersonal distance preferences in symptoms in BPD. With direct observation of subjects' personal space behavior in the stop-distance paradigm, we found a 2-fold larger preferred interpersonal distance in BPD than control (n = 30, n = 23). We

Current applications of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) technologies in patient-specific models of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders tend to focus on neuronal phenotypes. Here, we review recent efforts toward advancing hiPSCs toward non-neuronal cell types of the central nervous system (CNS) and highlight their potential use for the development of more complex in vitro models of neurodevelopment and disease. We present evidence from previous works in both rodents and humans of the importance of these cell types (oligodendrocytes, microglia, astrocytes) in neurologica

Stem cell therapy is considered a potential regenerative strategy for patients with neurologic deficits. Studies involving animal models of ischemic stroke have shown that stem cells transplanted into the brain can lead to functional improvement. With current advances in the understanding regarding the effects of introducing stem cells and their mechanisms of action, several clinical trials of stem cell therapy have been conducted in patients with stroke since 2005, including studies using mesenchymal stem cells, bone marrow mononuclear cells, and neural stem/progenitor cells. In addition, sev
