The basal ganglia are deep nuclei in the brain that include the caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, and substantia nigra. Pathological processes involving the basal ganglia often result in disorders of movement and behavior. A number of different autoimmune disorders predominantly involve the basal ganglia and can result in movement and psychiatric disorders. The classic basal ganglia autoimmune disorder is Sydenham chorea, a poststreptococcal neuropsychiatric disorder. Resurgence in the interest in Sydenham chorea is the result of the descriptions of other poststreptococcal neuropsychiatric di

The current study aimed to screen for indications of psychopathology displayed by the parents of adolescents diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), and examine the relationship between severity of adolescent eating disorder symptoms and parental psychopathology. Sixty female adolescents diagnosed with DSM-IV-TR AN (restricting-type and binge-purge-type) were administered the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) and parents completed the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R). As compared to established non-patient norms, both fathers and mothers of adolescents with AN reported greater levels of o

BACKGROUND: Auditory P50 suppression, assessed by using a paired auditory stimulus (S1 and S2) paradigm to record P50 mid-latency evoked potential, is assumed to reflect sensory gating. Recently, P50 suppression deficits were found in patients with anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The processes of fear conditioning are thought to play roles in pathophysiology of anxiety disorders. Our aim was to investigate whether sensory gating would be physiologically altered by fear conditioning.
METHODS: To clarify the relation

The aim of this paper is to review the level of empirical evidence for four different formats and settings that are available for psychotherapy delivery, i.e., group psychotherapy, out-patient individual psychotherapy, day hospital psychotherapy, and in-patient psychotherapy. The focus is on studies which include a wide range of DSM-IV-TR Axis II personality disorders. The results show that various psychotherapeutic treatments have proven to be efficacious with respect to reducing symptomatology and personality pathology, and improving social functioning in patients with Cluster A, B, C, or no

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between anxiety disorders, panic attack and the risk of major depression among adults in the community.
METHOD: Data were drawn from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program survey waves 1 (N = 20291) and 2 (N = 15849). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk of incident major depression at 12-month follow-up (wave 2) associated with each anxiety disorder and panic attacks assessed at wave 1, adjusting for differences in sociodemographic characteristics, and then controlling simultaneously for all anxiety disorders, and

Although quetiapine was introduced as an atypical antipsychotic drug with clinical efficacy in schizophrenia patients, it has been used in a variety of disease states over the last 5 years. The most common conditions have included mood and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, aggression, hostility, posttraumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, delirium, and comorbid substance abuse. Considering its efficacy in a wide variety of neuropsychiatric conditions and its excellent tolerability profile, quetiapine could emerge as a broad-spectrum psychotropic medication t

Psychotherapy has shifted from long-term to short-term approaches, which have been found to be effective for the treatment of specific psychiatric disorders. These psychotherapy interventions (primarily behavior therapy, CBT, and IPT) have been found useful in presenting an educational framework for disorders and the treatment rationale for intervention programs. Short-term and maintenance empirical data support the effectiveness of using behavior therapy and CBT as adjunctive interventions with medications for bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia. In major randomized clinical trials, psychoth

OBJECTIVE: It has been proposed by some investigators that trichotillomania, a disorder of chronic hair pulling, is a variant of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and some studies have suggested that the antiobessional agents clomipramine and fluoxetine are useful in treating this disorder. The authors investigated the efficacy of fluoxetine in the treatment of trichotillomania.
METHOD: Twenty-one adult chronic hair pullers were recruited into an 18-week placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study of fluoxetine, in doses up to 80 mg/day. The fluoxetine and placebo treatment phases consisted

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by multiple involuntary motor and phonic tics associated with behavioural disturbances including obsessive-compulsive and aggressive behavior, depression and, rarely, psychosis. The relationship of GTS, presumed to be predominantly a dopaminergic disorder, and depression, presumed to be a noradrenergic-serotoninergic deficiency state, is currently poorly understood. The reports published to date on the effects of tricyclic antidepressants in GTS have been contradictory; while Messiha et al. (1976) used

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hair loss in adolescents carries significant psychosocial impact, and it is often underrecognized and managed without adolescent-specific approaches. This review describes recent advances in diagnostics, pathophysiology, and therapies to improve diagnosis and management of adolescent alopecia.
RECENT FINDINGS: Trichoscopy and ultraviolet-enhanced follicular dermoscopy improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce invasive testing. Androgenetic alopecia is linked to obesity and genetic predisposition; topical minoxidil remains first-line with low-dose oral minoxidil use supported i

This case report presents the case of a 25-year-old woman who developed ketamine addiction following a single sub-anaesthetic dose of intranasal ketamine in a pilot study investigating intranasal racemic ketamine for acute suicidality. She had a history of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism spectrum disorder and anorexia nervosa, and she had sporadically used alcohol and cannabis. Following the intervention, she reported a transient reduction in suicidal ideation but later sought illicit ketamine to recreate its calming effects on intrusive thoughts. Subsequently she also starte

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based approaches show promise for reducing tic severity, yet little is known about their effect on comorbid symptoms.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to evaluate secondary outcomes from a pilot randomized controlled trial comparing mindfulness-based intervention for tics (MBIT) with psychoeducation, relaxation, and supportive therapy (PRST).
METHODS: Twenty-eight adults with Tourette's syndrome or persistent tic disorder were randomized to MBIT or PRST and completed measures of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms,

Anxiety and related disorders are prevalent across the lifespan, often have their onset during youth, and are associated with notable levels of impairment and burden across multiple domains. Elucidating the associations between differential patterns of neurodevelopment and anxiety in youth is a promising approach for developing deeper insights regarding the neurobiological etiologies and maintenance factors associated with anxiety and related disorders. A growing body of literature has yielded evidence of associations between patterns of brain structure (i.e., volume, cortical thickness, and c

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is recognized for its autoimmune origin. Its hallmark symptoms, dry eyes and mouth, result from glandular inflammation. Prior literature indicates that pSS not only affects the peripheral system but also involves the central nervous system (CNS), giving rise to various neuropsychiatric symptoms. However, there is limited published research on the psychiatric comorbidities in individuals with pSS.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar for this narrative review. The search spanned from inception until August 2023.

INTRODUCTION: A subgroup of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show self or heteroaggression, dyscontrol episodes, and others are of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) profile; some of them are resistant to medical and behavioural treatment. We describe the long-term outcome in a group of these patients, treated with radiofrequency brain lesions or combined stereotactic surgery and Gamma Knife (GK) radiosurgery.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 10 ASD patients with pathological aggressiveness and OCD, who had undergone radiofrequency lesions and/or radiosurgery with GK i
