Mapping the scientific literature on obstetric and perinatal health among sexual and gender minoritized (SGM) childbearing people and their infants: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests sexual and gender minoritized (SGM) childbearing individuals and their infants experience more adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes compared to their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. This study aimed to comprehensively map obstetric and perinatal physical health literature among SGM populations and their infants and identify knowledge gaps. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science Core Collection were systematically searched to identify published studies reporting obstetric and perinatal outcomes in SGM individuals or their infants. Study char

Magnitude and predictors of obstetric complications during delivery among postpartum women in Ethiopia: evidence from PMA Ethiopia longitudinal survey.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of pregnancy-related complications were preventable. However, the magnitude of complications during pregnancy and childbirth was high in sub-Saharan Africa. There was limited evidence on the magnitude of obstetric complications during childbirth and its predictors among postpartum women in Ethiopia. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The research used secondary data sources based on performance monitoring for action in Ethiopia's second cohort longitudinal survey. It was a national survey that was conducted in three large, predominantly agrarian regions (Oromia, Amhara, and SNN

Impact factors and obstetric outcomes of preeclampsia in twin pregnancies by prepregnancy body mass index: a six-year retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Among many risk factors for preeclampsia (PE), prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) is one of few controllable factors. However, there is a lack of stratified analysis based on the prepregnancy BMI. This study aimed to determine the influencing factors for PE and assess the impact of PE on obstetric outcomes in twin pregnancies by prepregnancy BMI. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2022, in Southwest China. Impact factors and associations between PE and obstetric outcomes were analyzed separately for twin pregnancies with prepre

Exploring melatonin's multifaceted role in female reproductive health: From follicular development to lactation and its therapeutic potential in obstetric syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Melatonin is mainly secreted by the pineal gland during darkness and regulates biological rhythms through its receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus. In addition, it also plays a role in the reproductive system by affecting the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and by acting as a free radical scavenger thus contributing to the maintenance of the optimal physiological state of the gonads. Besides, melatonin can freely cross the placenta to influence fetal development. However, there is still a lack of overall understanding of the role of mela

Virtual Reality for Upper Limb Rehabilitation in Patients With Obstetric Brachial Palsy: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric brachial palsy (OBP) is a pathology caused by complications during childbirth because of cervical spine elongation, affecting the motor and sensory innervation of the upper limbs. The most common lesion occurs on the C5 and C6 nerve branches, known as Erb-Duchenne palsy. The least common lesion is when all nerve roots are affected (C5-T1), which has the worst prognosis. Virtual reality (VR) is commonly used in neurological rehabilitation for the evaluation and treatment of physical deficits. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to assess the efficacy of VR in the rehab

Are we using best practice to guide laxative use in post-partum patients with obstetric anal sphincter injuries - A retrospective review.

OBJECTIVE: Obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) is the leading cause of anal incontinence (AI) in young women. Laxatives are recommended to enhance recovery, however there are no consistent guidelines to guide best practice on the type, frequency, and dose of laxative should be used. This study aimed to evaluate the current use of laxatives following repair of OASIs, and to determine any association with AI. Study design A retrospective cohort study of 356 women who sustained OASIs between January 2016 and June 2020, at a single tertiary centre in Adelaide. Data regarding the type, dose and

The detailed obstetric course of the first Japanese patient with AEBP1-related Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (classical-like EDS, type 2).

We reported a detailed obstetric course of a Japanese patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the AEBP1 gene. She was diagnosed with classical EDS at 3 years of age. At 33 years, whole-exome sequencing revealed a homozygous nonsense variant (c.1894C > T:p.Arg632*) in AEBP1. This is the 10th case of AEBP1-related EDS (classical-like EDS type 2) and the first in Japan. She was managed as an inpatient at our hospital beginning at 20 weeks of gestation because of the possibility of high-risk pregnancy. She experienced painful urinary retention, migraine
