Atypical Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy: 18 Year Interval Between Eyes.

A 5-year-old boy developed profound loss of vision in his right eye and was found to have a 11778 mitochondrial point mutation consistent with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). He maintained 20/20 vision in the left eye for 18 years until age 23, when he experienced loss of vision in that eye. This 18 year interval between eye involvement in LHON is the longest reported to date and reinforces the variability in presentation and progression seen in this disease.

Germinoma of the optic nerve: case report.

This report concerns the unusual case of a germinoma primarily arising from the right optic nerve. The patient is a 31-year-old male who presented with progressive loss of vision, but with no clinical evidence suggestive of hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, including diabetes insipidus. The neuroimaging studies disclosed a tumor in the right optic nerve, but no intracranial tumors. Histologically, the tumor consisted of proliferating large clear cells with lymphocytic infiltration. The immunohistochemical studies revealed that the tumor cells expressed placental alkaline phosphatase. Perusal

Quantitative studies of elastin in the optic nerve heads of persons with primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To compare quantitative and qualitative differences in elastin content in the optic nerve heads of glaucomatous and control human eyes. METHODS: Transmission electron microscopy and quantitative histomorphometry on ten control and ten glaucomatous eyes. RESULTS: Elastin fiber complexes in the control lamina cribrosa were smaller and more numerous than in the insertion zone of the sclera immediately surrounding the lamina. Although the density of elastin fibers in the normal lamina was twice that of the insertion zone (P = 0.004), the percent area of the connective tissue matrix occu

Ocular motility anomalies in developmental misdirection of the optic chiasm.

A 35-year-old normally pigmented man underwent monocular hemifield visual-evoked potential examinations that indicated a lack of normal decussation of nasal paramacular retinogeniculate fibers in the optic chiasm. We studied effects of this anomaly on ocular motility using electro-oculography and the magnetic search-coil technique. The patient exhibited horizontal congenital nystagmus with a predominantly positive exponential waveform. Horizontal smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus were consistently reversed, independent of eye position in the orbit. Vertical tracking was uniformly normal

Fast-hyperspectral imaging remote sensing: Emission quantification of NO2 and SO2 from marine vessels.

Marine vessels play a vital role in the global economy; however, their negative impact on the marine atmospheric environment is a growing concern. Quantifying marine vessel emissions is an essential prerequisite for controlling these emissions and improving the marine atmospheric environment. Optical imaging remote sensing is a vital technique for quantifying marine vessel emissions. However, the available imaging techniques have suffered from insufficient detection accuracy and inadequate spatiotemporal resolution. Herein, we propose a fast-hyperspectral imaging remote sensing technique that

Revealing the invisible: In vivo imaging for photoaging therapies- review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Photoaging refers to the cumulative structural and functional changes in the skin caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, distinct from chronological (intrinsic) aging. Among available interventions, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has demonstrated not only anti-tumor efficacy but also skin rejuvenating effects. To evaluate treatment outcomes objectively, modern non-invasive imaging technologies are increasingly applied in dermatology. This review aims to summarize the use of in vivo imaging tools-Antera 3D, VISIA complexion analysis system, optical coherence tomograph

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of collagen in normal skin and skin fibrosis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging modality that is transforming clinical diagnosis in dermatology and other medical fields. OCT provides a cross-sectional evaluation of the epidermis and dermis and allows in vivo imaging of skin collagen. Upregulated collagen content is a key feature of fibrotic skin diseases. These diseases are often managed by the practitioner's subjective assessment of disease severity and response to therapies. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the principles of OCT and present available evidence on the ability of OCT to ima
