Advancing influenza vaccines: A review of next-generation candidates and their potential for global health impact.

BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccines are an essential tool for influenza prevention, control and preparedness. However, demand for them and their programmatic suitability globally is significantly influenced by their variable effectiveness against influenza illness annually, limited duration of protection and need for yearly updating and vaccination. As such, the World Health Organization and major funders, such as the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have strongly encouraged developing influenza vaccines with increased effica

Ultrasound-guided puncture drainage versus surgical incision drainage for deep neck space abscesses: a protocol for a systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Deep neck space abscesses (DNAs) are serious surgical emergencies, associated with life-threatening complications. Surgical incision and drainage combined with antibiotics is the main treatment for DNAs, but drawbacks still exist. Ultrasound-guided puncture drainage is an alternative treatment for some DNAs with limited clinical evidence. Hence, the optimal drainage technique for the treatment of DNAs remains unclear. Therefore, we will perform a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the efficacy of ultrasound-guided puncture drainage for DNAs. METHODS A

Cystic fibrosis: Infection prevention & control recommendations for universities, colleges and institutes of further and higher education - A practical guide.

BACKGROUND: The avoidance of cross-infection remains of critical importance to prevent the transmission of cystic fibrosis (CF)-related microbial pathogens to persons/people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). To date, there has been a paucity of infection prevention and control (IPC) guidance relating to infection risk at higher educational institutions. With improvements in treatments, more PwCF are now attending universities/colleges and educational institutions now seek CF-specific guidance on IPC from clinical CF teams/centres. METHODS: Real world infection-related questions from university stu

Effect of aqueous olanexidine versus alcohol-based chlorhexidine for surgical skin antisepsis on incidence of surgical site infections in gastrointestinal surgery: multicentre randomised controlled clinical trial (OEDO trial) protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most common nosocomial infections in surgery patients. Two types of preparations, povidone-iodine and chlorhexidine-alcohol, are commonly used in preoperative antiseptic procedures worldwide. However, there are inconsistencies among international guideline recommendations concerning skin antiseptics. This trial aimed to evaluate the superiority of olanexidine, which reduced SSI rates more than povidone-iodine in our previous randomised trial, over chlorhexidine-alcohol in clean-contaminated surgery. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This multice

Early-versus late-onset sepsis in neonates - time to shift the paradigm?

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is traditionally classified as early-onset sepsis (EOS) and late-onset sepsis (LOS) disease categories. This paradigm was based on observed epidemiological data from high income settings. However, increasing availability of microbiology results from diverse settings challenges these assumptions, necessitating re-examination of neonatal sepsis classifications. OBJECTIVES: To review the literature describing the aetiology of EOS and LOS in hospitalized neonates with stratification of pathogen spectrum by low- (LIC), middle- (MIC) and high-income (HIC) country setting
