Psychiatric illness in patients referred to a dermatology-psychiatry clinic.

There is a recognized psychiatric morbidity among those who attend dermatology clinics. We aimed to determine the pattern of psychological and social problems among patients referred to a liaison psychiatrist within a dermatology clinic. Notes from 149 patients were reviewed and more detailed assessments performed in a subgroup of 32 consecutive referrals. All but 5% merited a psychiatric diagnosis. Of these, depressive illness accounted for 44% and anxiety disorders, 35%. Less common general psychiatric disorders included social phobia, somatization disorder, alcohol dependence syndrome, obse

Gentisic acid confers multimodal neuroprotection in experimental Alzheimer's disease by targeting oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and protein aggregation.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline associated with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, cholinergic dysfunction, and accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau). Given the multifactorial nature of AD, phytochemicals with multi-target pharmacological properties are of growing therapeutic interest. Gentisic acid (GA; 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid) possesses established antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; however, its potential relevance in AD has not been comprehensively evaluated. PURP

Clinical characteristics and exploratory serum biomarker findings in vestibular migraine: a cross-sectional case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular migraine (VM) is a common disorder in vertigo clinics, but its diagnosis remains challenging because of symptom overlap with other conditions and the lack of widely accepted objective biomarkers. This exploratory cross-sectional case-control study aimed to characterize the clinical features of VM, examine clinical and serum factors associated with VM case status, and assess the apparent ability of serum biomarkers to distinguish VM cases from healthy controls. METHODS: Between May and December 2025, 145 patients with VM and 50 healthy controls were enrolled at the First

Dorso lateral prefrontal cortex stimulation with TMS in chronic migraine individuals refractory to anti-CGRP monoclonal antibodies: Clinical, neuropsychological and neurophysiological effects.

BackgroundPeople with high-frequency episodic migraine or chronic migraine may have resistant or refractory forms. The lack of efficacy of pharmacologic therapies is a major clinical challenge that requires alternative strategies, including neuromodulation and exploration of new targets to improve disease management. The present study aimed to test the effectiveness of an accelerated protocol of theta burst stimulation (iTBS) via the dorso lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in a group of chronic migraine individuals who did not respond to monoclonal antibodies against calcitonin gene-related pe

Additive benefit of rehabilitation on physical status, symptoms and mental health after hospitalisation for severe COVID-19 pneumonia.

INTRODUCTION: The potential additive benefits of rehabilitation beyond spontaneous recovery post-COVID-19 currently remain unknown. METHODS: In this prospective, interventional, non-randomised parallel assignment two-arm study, we investigated the effects of an 8-week rehabilitation programme (Rehab, n=25) added to usual care (UC) versus UC (n=27) on respiratory symptoms, fatigue, functional capacity, mental health and health-related quality of life in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, 6-8 weeks post-hospital discharge. The rehabilitation programme included exercise, education, dietary and ps

Prevalence of and factors associated with unmanageable pain levels in people with knee or hip osteoarthritis: a cross-sectional population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Pain due to knee and / or hip osteoarthritis (HKOA) is the most common symptom for seeking healthcare. Pain interferes on daily activities, social and occupational participation in people with HKOA. The goal of this study is to estimate the prevalence of unmanageable pain levels (UPL) among people with HKOA), characterize this population and identify factors associated with UPL, and compare therapeutic strategies used by people with UPL versus manageable pain levels (MPL). METHODS: We analysed data from the EpiReumaPt study (n = 10,661), that included a representative sample of th

Non-Invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation Improves Brain Lesion Volume and Neurobehavioral Outcomes in a Rat Model of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be a major cause of death and disability worldwide. This study assessed the effectiveness of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) in reducing brain lesion volume and improving neurobehavioral performance in a rat model of TBI. Animals were randomized into three experimental groups: (1) TBI with sham stimulation treatment (Control), (2) TBI treated with five lower doses (2-min) nVNS, and (3) TBI treated with five higher doses (2 × 2-min) nVNS. We used the gammaCore nVNS device to deliver stimulations. Magnetic resonance imaging studies w

Long-term effect of indomethacin on a rat model of neonatal hypoxia ischemic encephalopathy through behavioral tests.

BACKGROUND: Many medical experts prescribe indomethacin because of its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, tocolytic, and duct closure effects. This article presents an evaluation of the enduring impact of indomethacin on neonatal rats with hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insults, employing behavioral tests as a method of assessment. METHODS: The experiment was conducted on male Wistar-Albino rats weighing 10 to 15 g, aged between seven and 10 days. The rats were divided into three groups using a random allocation method as follows: hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) group, HIE treated with indomethacin g

Cadaveric emergency cricothyrotomy training for non-surgeons using a bronchoscopy-enhanced curriculum.

BACKGROUND: Emergency cricothyrotomy training for non-surgeons is important as rare "cannot intubate or oxygenate events" may occur multiple times in a provider's career when surgical expertise is not immediately available. However, such training is highly variable and often infrequent, therefore, enhancing these experiences is important. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is bronchoscopy-enhanced cricothyrotomy training in cadavers feasible, and what are the potential benefits provided by this innovation for trainees? METHODS: This study was performed during implementation of a new program to train non-sur

Stress and Ketamine, Bimodal Influence on Cognitive Functions.

The glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) non-selective antagonist, ketamine, has been recently repurposed as a rapidly acting antidepressant, catalyzing the vigorous investigation of glutamate-signaling modulators as novel therapeutic agents for depressive disorders. Beneficial effects of this drug in the quick-acting treatment of depression are recognized. The long-term effects of ketamine have not been known, including the cognitive sphere. It is well acknowledged that prolonged exposure to stress induces depression and cognitive impairment. It seemed reasonable to ask how the lon

Acupuncture combined with transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for chronic postpartum insomnia comorbid with emotional disorders: a case report.

Postpartum women constitute a vulnerable population in whom insomnia comorbid with emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression is disproportionately prevalent, attributable to hormonal fluctuations, environmental changes, and social role transitions. This comorbidity significantly increases their long-term risk of mental health disorders. Given the safety concerns of sedative-hypnotic medications, non-pharmacological therapies are the first-line treatment for this population. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with chronic postpartum insomnia comorbid with emotional disorders, wh

The association between internalized HIV stigma, depression, and anxiety among young people living with HIV affected by resilience and self-esteem as mediators.

Adolescents and young adults living with HIV aged 15-24 years face an increased risk of mental health problems. This study examined the association between internalized HIV stigma and depression among young people living with HIV and explored whether resilience and self-esteem mediate this relationship. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 120 participants aged 15-24 years receiving outpatient care at a tertiary care center in Bangkok, Thailand. Participants completed validated Thai versions of the PHQ-9, GAD-7, Internalized HIV Stigma Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Connor-Davidson
