First report of flesh-fly (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) myiasis in little-devil poison frog (Anura: Dendrobatidae) from Ecuador.

We report a case of myiasis in the poison frog Oophaga sylvatica from the Canandé Reserve located in the Chocó region of northwestern Ecuador. We identified the causal agents as larvae of flesh flies, Sarcophagidae, by means of DNA barcoding and morphological features. This represents the first record of myiasis in an anuran in Ecuador and the second record for Dendrobatidae in the Neotropics. This observation may constitute a case of facultative parasitism where larvae are deposited in the frog's wounds, but further research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms underlying this in

Höffding step and beyond: The impact of visual sensory impairment on cognitive performance in neuropsychological testing of survivors of acute methanol poisoning.

BACKGROUND: Sensory deficits can result in limitations regarding how well neuropsychological test findings can be interpreted. Only a few studies have investigated the influence of vision alteration on neuropsychological tests. In 2012 the Czech Republic experienced mass methanol poisoning. Methanol metabolites cause histotoxic hypoxia to the optic nerve. OBJECTIVE: In the current study, the effect of the toxic damage on the parts of the visual pathway on visual and non-visual neuropsychological measures was investigated using electrophysiological methods (visual evoked potential (VEP) and op

"A new order of poisonous substances": revisiting Robert M. Glover's dissertation on the physiological effects of bromine, chlorine, and iodine compounds.

Robert Mortimer Glover's contribution as the first to identify the anaesthetic effects of chloroform went unrecognized for over 130 years. Posterity now remembers Glover as the first to experimentally demonstrate the effects of chloroform, and yet, the scope and impact of the work for which he is remembered remains largely undiscussed. This historical article returns to Glover's dissertation, for which he won the Harveian Prize in 1842, and examines its experimental findings in their historical context. Departing from the body of literature which emphasizes the clinical orientation of early an

Zinc and phosphorus poisoning tolerance of Cu-SSZ-13 and Ce-Cu-SSZ-13 in the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides.

SSZ-13 has been commercialized as a catalyst in diesel engines for the selectivity catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with ammonia (NH3-SCR), but the catalyst is facing the problem of poisoning. Herein, two well-designed catalysts, Cu-SSZ-13 and cerium (Ce) doped Cu-SSZ-13 are synthesized, and their tolerance to zinc (Zn) and phosphorus (P) poisoning alone and together are explored in detail. The research found that Zn and P poisoning alone leads to the destruction of Cu-SSZ-13 structure, resulting in the decline of denitration (de-NOx) performance following the mechanism dominated b

COVID-19 and contamination: impact on exposures to alcohol-based hand sanitizers reported to Texas Poison Control Centers, 2020.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS), creating shortages leading to additional production by new, non-traditional manufacturers. In June 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warnings about methanol or 1-propanol contaminated brands of hand sanitizer. Exposure to methanol, including dermally, can cause kidney damage, blindness and death. Exposure to 1-propanol can cause severe acidosis and death. Chronic exposure may be more likely due to increased hand sanitizer use in 2020. METHODS: We used generic codes for ABHS to charac
