Patients with osteomalacia have a low bone mineral density (BMD) and are often misdiagnosed as osteoporosis. A marked increase in BMD is noticed following successful treatment of osteomalacia. The biochemical hallmark of tumour-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is hypophosphatemia. Patients with TIO often have severe hypophosphatemic osteomalacia and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry may demonstrate low BMD. Surgical removal of the phosphatonin-secreting lesion restores serum phosphate, corrects osteomalacia and is associated with a dramatic increase in BMD. We report two patients with TIO and low BMD

The exact prognostic role of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in patients with BCR::ABL1 negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) remains unknown as it is often masked by other MPN-related features that bear strong prognostic impact on thrombotic risk. Therefore, current MPN treatment is not primarily guided by presence of CV risk factors. Treatment of CV risk factors in MPN patients usually mirrors that from the general population, despite the fact that CV risk factors in MPNs have their own specificities. Moreover, the optimal target levels for different metabolic deflections in

Osteosarcopenia is a burgeoning geriatric syndrome and a familiar disease among older individuals. It is characterized by reduced skeletal muscle mass and bone mineral density due to osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Its clinical manifestations include reduced physical performance and individuals becoming prone to falls during the aging process resulting in fractures and hospitalization, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients and increases the risk of death. Due to the aging social structure of the global population, the morbidity of osteosarcopenia is expected to continue to incre

Most patients with epilepsy will benefit from seizure control with one of an array of chronic antiseizure medications. Knowledge of the potential long-term effects of these medications is critical to prevent adverse consequences on overall health. Antiseizure medications vary in their capacities to affect the brain and peripheral nerves, hormones, bone mineralization, cardiovascular risk, renal health, hepatic, hematological, and dermatological systems. Understanding of pathophysiology and population risk has evolved, although most of the data available are still on older generation antiseizur

PURPOSE: Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy 21 (Ts21) and results in skeletal deficits including shortened stature, low bone mineral density, and a predisposition to early onset osteoporosis. Ts21 causes significant alterations in skeletal development, morphology of the appendicular skeleton, bone homeostasis, age-related bone loss, and bone strength. However, the genetic or cellular origins of DS skeletal phenotypes remain unclear.
RECENT FINDINGS: New studies reveal a sexual dimorphism in characteristics and onset of skeletal deficits that differ between DS and typically developing ind

BACKGROUND: The parasitic protozoal infections leishmaniasis, human African trypanosomiasis, and Chagas disease are neglected tropical diseases that pose serious health risks for much of the world's population. Current treatment options suffer from limitations, but plantderived natural products may provide economically advantageous therapeutic alternatives. Several germacranolide sesquiterpenoids have shown promising antiparasitic activities, but the mechanisms of activity have not been clearly established.
OBJECTIVE: The objective is to use in silico screening of known antiparasitic germacra

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory, metabolic, and epigenetic disease, which leads to the life-threatening coronary artery disease. Emerging studies from bench to bedside have demonstrated the pivotal role of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. This article hereby reviews oxidation mechanism of LDL, and the pro-atherogenic and biomarker role of oxidized LDL in atherosclerosis. We also review the pharmacological effects of several representative natural products (vitamin E, resveratrol, quercetin, probucol, tanshinone IIA, epigall

In this paper, we compare a variety of spatio-temporal conditional autoregressive models to a dengue fever dataset in Colombia, and incorporate an innovative data transformation method in the data analysis. In order to gain a better understanding on the effects of different niche variables in the epidemiological process, we explore Poisson-lognormal and binomial models with different Bayesian spatio-temporal modeling methods in this paper. Our results show that the selected model can well capture the variations of the data. The population density, elevation, daytime and night land surface temp

Aedes albopictus, also known as the "Asian Tiger Mosquito", is an invasive mosquito species to Europe causing high concern in public health due to its severe nuisance and its vectorial capacity for pathogens such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika. Consequently, the responsible authorities implement management activities to reduce its population density, possibly to below noxious and epidemiological thresholds. In urban areas, these aims are difficult to achieve because of the species' ability to develop in a wide range of artificial breeding sites, mainly private properties. This d

Obesity in older adults is a growing public health problem, yet the appropriate treatment remains controversial partly due to evidence that weight loss reduces bone mass and may increase fracture risk. The purpose of this review is to summarize the research to date on the effects of diet-induced weight loss on bone health in obese (body mass index 30 kg/m2 and above) older (aged 65 years or older) adults. Observational studies have shown that weight loss in this population decreases total hip bone mineral density and increases the risk of frailty fractures (composite of proximal femur, pelvis,

Quantitative knowledge about which natural and anthropogenic factors influence the global spread of plague remains sparse. We estimated the worldwide spreading velocity of plague during the Third Pandemic, using more than 200 years of extensive human plague case records and genomic data, and analyzed the association of spatiotemporal environmental factors with spreading velocity. Here, we show that two lineages, 2.MED and 1.ORI3, spread significantly faster than others, possibly reflecting differences among strains in transmission mechanisms and virulence. Plague spread fastest in regions with

The riparian European mink (Mustela lutreola), currently surviving in only three unconnected sites in Europe, is now listed as a critically endangered species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Habitat loss and degradation, anthropogenic mortality, interaction with the feral American mink (Neovison vison), and infectious diseases are among the main causes of its decline. In the Spanish Foral Community of Navarra, where the highest density of M. lutreola in its western population has been detected, different studies and conservation measures are ongoing, including health studies on Eur

BACKGROUND: Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for the late-onset form of Alzheimer disease (AD). Loss-of-function (LOF) mutations of PCSK9 and PCSK9 inhibitors lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of PCSK9 LOF variants on risk and age of onset of AD.
METHODS: A total of 878 participants (410 controls and 468 AD cases) from the Quebec Founder Population were included in the study.
RESULTS: Fifty-four (6.2%) participants carried the R46L mutation, where

BACKGROUND: We investigated the association between pentraxin 3 (PTX3), a novel inflammatory marker, and bone mineral density (BMD) in the general Korean population.
METHODS: We selected a sub-cohort of 1,440 subjects (757 men and 683 women) from participants in the community-based Dong-gu Study. The mean age was 66.0 ± 8.1 years for men and 63.7 ± 7.9 years for women. The plasma PTX3 levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and BMD was measured in the femoral neck and lumbar spine using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Linear regression analyses were used to evaluate

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vitamin D (VitD) deficiency is highly prevalent among HIV-infected individuals. Given the overlapping risk for several chronic disease and immunomodulatory outcomes from both long-standing HIV and VitD deficiency, there is great interest in clarifying the clinical role of VitD for this population.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have expanded our knowledge regarding the epidemiology and mechanisms of VitD deficiency-associated outcomes in the setting of HIV. Clinical trials focusing on VitD supplementation have demonstrated a positive impact on bone mineral density in subgr

BACKGROUND: Management advice for women with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is hampered by the lack of accurate personalised risk estimates for subsequent invasive breast cancer (BC). Prospective validation of the only tool that estimates individual BC risk for a woman with LCIS, the International Breast Cancer Intervention Study Risk Evaluation Tool (IBIS-RET), is lacking.
METHODS: Using population-based cancer registry data for 732 women with LCIS, the calibration and discrimination accuracy of IBIS-RET Version 7.2 were assessed.
RESULTS: The mean observed 10-year risk of invasive BC was

INTRODUCTION: We assessed antibodies against low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4 (LRP4-Ab) in a Chinese population with myasthenia gravis (MG).
METHODS: Serum samples from 116 patients and 80 controls were collected. Acetylcholine receptor antibodies(AChR-Ab) and muscle-specific receptor tyrosine kinase antibodies (MuSK-Ab) were tested using an enzyme-linked immune absorption assay, and LRP4-Ab was identified using a cell-based assay. MG patients with neither AChR-Ab nor MuSK-Ab were defined as double-seronegative MG (dSN-MG).
RESULTS: Two of 116 (1.7%) of all patients and 2 o

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with mineral and bone disorders (MBD) that are now considered as a syndrome. Bone fragility and a four to tenfold increased rate of skeletal fractures are often reported in CKD patients. The evaluation of the risk of these fractures in CKD patients should explore the same risk factors identified for the general population including low body weight, menopause, personal and familial history of osteoporosis, chronic inflammatory diseases, and corticosteroid therapy. The aim of this article is to provide a critical review of the tools used for the evaluat

Abstract: With the increase in the prevalence of obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become among the leading causes of chronic liver disease in the pediatric age group. Once believed to be a "two-hit process", it is now clear that the actual pathophysiology of NAFLD is complex and involves multiple pathways. Moreover, NAFLD is not always benign, and patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are at increased risk of developing advanced stages of liver disease. It has also been shown that NAFLD is not only a liver disease, but is also associated with multiple extrahe
