Sexual health and sexual trauma in women with severe mental illness: An exploratory survey of Western Australian community mental health services.

Australian women attending community mental health services were surveyed to determine the relationship between sexual trauma, sexual activity, and sexual health seeking behaviors. Self-reported history of "forced sex" was 58.4% (n = 122 out of 220). Latent class analysis revealed a three-class model: "sexually active and health seeking," "low sexual activity and health seeking" and "low sexual activity and not health seeking." An association with general practitioner engagement and sexual health seeking behaviors was found. Rates of self-reported sexual trauma reinforce the need for screening

Periodontitis prevalence in adults ≥ 65 years of age, in the USA.

The older adult population is growing rapidly in the USA and it is expected that by 2040 the number of adults ≥ 65 years of age will have increased by about 50%. With the growth of this subpopulation, oral health status, and periodontal status in particular, becomes important in the quest to maintain an adequate quality of life. Poor oral health can have a major impact, leading to tooth loss, pain and discomfort, and may prevent older adults from chewing food properly, often leading to poor nutrition. Periodontitis is monitored in the USA at the national level as part of the Healthy People 202

Research priorities for Chagas disease, human African trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis.

This report provides a review and analysis of the research landscape for three diseases - Chagas disease, human African trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis - that disproportionately afflict poor and remote populations with limited access to health services. It represents the work of the disease reference group on Chagas Disease, Human African Trypanosomiasis and Leishmaniasis (DRG3) which was established to identify key research priorities through review of research evidence and input from stakeholders' consultations. The diseases, which are caused by related protozoan parasites, are described i

Factors associated with Alaska Native fatal and nonfatal suicidal behaviors 2001-2009: trends and implications for prevention.

Suicide rates among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) young people are significantly higher than other ethnic groups in the United States. Not only are there great differences when comparing AI/AN rates and those of other Americans, some tribal groups have very low rates of suicide while other Native communities have much higher rates. Despite this obvious variability, there is little research to help understand the factors associated with these differences. The current study considers the correlates of suicidal behavior in one rural Alaska Native region that suffers disproportionately

Time and distance barriers to mammography facilities in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

To a great extent, research on geographic accessibility to mammography facilities has focused on urban-rural differences. Spatial accessibility within urban areas can nonetheless pose a challenge, especially for minorities and low-income urban residents who are more likely to depend on public transportation. To examine spatial and temporal accessibility to mammography facilities in the Atlanta metropolitan area by public and private transportation, we built a multimodal transportation network model including bus and rail routes, bus and rail stops, transfers, walk times, and wait times. Our an

Challenges and opportunities for cardiovascular disease prevention.

Cardiovascular diseases are highly preventable, yet they remain the most common cause of death in the world. The epidemic is receding in industrialized countries; however, many low-income and middle-income countries have experienced an increase in cardiovascular diseases and 80% of all cardiovascular diseases deaths occur there. In the last 20 years, the epidemiology and surveillance of cardiovascular diseases have laid the foundations for public health interventions that may reduce the burden of disease. Relevant population-specific local data are therefore needed to describe the trends and p

Smoking, substance use, and mental health correlates in urban adolescent girls.

This study examined the associations among smoking tobacco and/or cannabis with alcohol use, depression, disordered eating and healthy behaviors among adolescent girls enrolled in an HIV prevention intervention randomized trial. Baseline self-reported behaviors from 744 sexually active, low-income, urban participants were collected using an audio computer assisted self interview. Girls ranged in age from 15 to 19 years old with a mean age of 16.5. Over 16% of girls reported smoking cigarettes, 41% smoked cannabis and 12% used both substances. Girls who smoked either substance had higher scores

Healthcare for migrants and for marginalized individuals: The Marienambulanz in Graz, Austria.

The Marienambulanz in Graz, which was founded in 1999, is an outpatient clinic aiming to provide free medical services for marginalized groups. Medical and socioeconomic data of patients at the outpatient clinic have been collected electronically since 2003. The purpose of this study was to find out which persons were treated at the Marienambulanz in the last seven years (2003-2009) and to find out the most frequent reasons for attending the Marienambulanz. We analysed existing medical data descriptively in order to find out the four most frequent reasons for going to the outpatient clinic, th

Current perceptions of travelers' diarrhea treatments and vaccines: results from a postal questionnaire survey and physician interviews.

BACKGROUND: Travelers' diarrhea (TD) occurs at high frequency in individuals from industrialized countries visiting destinations in nonindustrialized countries and may result in chronic complications such as Guillain-Barré syndrome. METHODS: We distributed a questionnaire requesting information on physicians' perceptions of currently available TD products, hypothesized TD vaccines, and aspects of travelers' behavior. Some physicians also were interviewed by telephone. RESULTS: We obtained completed questionnaires from named individuals at 68 UK/US clinics. These individuals reported seeing a

Multimorbidity is associated with better quality of care among vulnerable elders.

BACKGROUND: Older patients with multiple chronic conditions may be at higher risk of receiving poorer overall quality of care compared with those with single or no chronic conditions. Possible reasons include competing guidelines for individual conditions, burden of numerous recommendations, and difficulty implementing treatments for multiple conditions. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether coexisting combinations of 8 common chronic conditions (hypertension, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, osteoarthritis, diabetes mellitus, depression, osteoporosis, and

Control of West Nile virus, Rhode Island, 2003.

Thanks largely to systematic larviciding by the State's 39 municipalities, and aided by the public's destruction of "backyard" mosquito habitats and adoption of personal protective measures (clothing, repellant), Rhode Island minimized the potential human burden of WNV during the 2003 mosquito season (six serious WNV cases, one death, and no reports of WNV-tainted blood donations). The potential burden of WNV on domestic animals was also reduced through immunization. Nonetheless, the State's first WNV death reminds us of the danger this disease poses for the very young, for elders, and for peo

The Bambuí Health and Aging Study (BHAS): factors associated with hospitalization of the elderly.

This study aimed to identify factors associated with hospital admissions of the elderly. All residents of Bambuí, Minas Gerais State >/= 60 years (n = 1,742) were selected. Some 1,606 of these (92.2%) participated in the study. The dependent variable was the number of hospital admissions (none, one, and two or more) during the previous 12 months. Independent variables were grouped as enabling, predisposing, and need-related factors. The strongest associations with multiple hospital admissions were: living alone; financial constraints to purchase of medication; and various indicators of need (w

Social inequalities in cause-specific premature mortality in rural and urban France: a pre-pandemic population attributable fraction analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities remain a major determinant of mortality across Europe. This study aimed first to quantify cause-specific premature mortality across urban and rural areas in mainland France during the pre-pandemic period, taking into account social inequalities, and second to assess the extent of these social inequalities using the population attributable fraction (PAF) approach. METHODS: Cause-specific deaths were identified from the French national mortality database and linked to municipality-level deprivation quintiles using French-European Deprivation Index (F-EDI). Wealth-based and rural-urban disparities in digestive diseases among indonesian adults: evidence from a cross-sectional analysis of the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS-5).

BACKGROUND: Digestive diseases represent an important public health concern in Indonesia, with national surveys reporting notable symptom burden and frequent hospital presentations for conditions such as gastritis, dyspepsia, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, evidence on their social and geographic disparities remains limited. Understanding how socioeconomic status and place of residence are associated with digestive health can guide equitable policy interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study examined socioeconomic and rural-urban disparities in digestive diseases among Indonesia

Rural and Ethnic Disparities in Out-of-hospital Care and Transport Pathways After Road Traffic Trauma in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: The out-of-hospital emergency medical service (EMS) care responses and the transport pathways to hospital play a vital role in patient survival following injury and are the first component of a well-functioning, optimised system of trauma care. Despite longstanding challenges in delivering equitable healthcare services in the health system of Aotearoa-New Zealand (NZ), little is known about inequities in EMS-delivered care and transport pathways to hospital-level care. METHODS: This population-level cohort study on out-of-hospital care, based on national EMS data, included traum
