Interpregnancy interval and prevalence of selected birth defects: A multistate study.

BACKGROUND: Both short and long interpregnancy intervals (IPIs) have been associated with adverse birth outcomes. We undertook a multistate study to describe the prevalence of selected birth defects by IPI. METHODS: We obtained data from nine population-based state birth defects registries for singleton live births in 2000-2009 among mothers with a previous live birth identified through birth certificates. IPI was calculated as the difference between prior birthdate and start of the current pregnancy (conception date). We estimated prevalence of selected defects per 10,000 live births and pre

Birth prevalence of congenital anomalies in Argentina, according to socioeconomic level.

Birth prevalence of congenital anomalies (CA) in Argentina is estimated around 1.7%. CA are the second leading cause of infant mortality. Poverty and other adverse socioeconomic conditions have been associated with birth defects. To describe the prevalence at birth of CA, according to the two proxy variables of socioeconomic level: the health subsector of the hospital where the cases were born (PUB-public versus PRI-private or social security) and its geographical location. The design of the study was ecological using the data of the National Network of Congenital Anomalies of Argentina (RENAC

LOW PREVALENCE OF HAEMOSPORIDIANS IN BLOOD AND TISSUE SAMPLES FROM HUMMINGBIRDS.

Hummingbirds are vital members of terrestrial ecosystems, and because of their high metabolic requirements, they serve as indicators of ecosystem health. Monitoring the parasitic infections of hummingbirds is thus especially important. Haemosporidians, a widespread group of avian blood parasites, are known to infect hummingbirds, but little is known about the prevalence and diversity of these parasites in hummingbirds. The prevalence of haemosporidians in several hummingbird species was examined and we compared 4 different tissue types in detecting parasites by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

High prevalence of osteoporosis in patients undergoing spine surgery in China.

BACKGROUND: With the increase in life expectancy, a large number of patients with osteoporosis (OP) are undergoing spine surgery, which may adversely affect the surgical success rate. The prevalence of OP varies in different regions, and no data are available that represent the prevalence of OP among Chinese patients over 50 years of age who are undergoing spine surgery. It was the first multicenter study to assess OP in these patients. Aiming to obtain comprehensive data, this study combined bone mineral density (BMD) measurements and visual radiography assessment (VRA) to analyze the prevale

Prevalence and risk factors for falls in patients with spondyloarthritis: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA) may have a greater risk of falling due to poor postural balance and decreased mobility. To our best knowledge, there are no published reviews that study falls in patients with SpA. Therefore, we aim to systematically review the literature and identify the prevalence and risk factors of falls in patients with SpA. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review using 5 electronic databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar using controlled vocabulary terms (eg MeSH terms) in the search strategy for the concepts: falls, fall ri

Increased prevalence of femoroacetabular impingement on the elderly with fractures of the proximal femur.

OBJECTIVES: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has been recently related to several pathologies, besides chondral injury and hip arthritis. We aim to investigate the prevalence of FAI morphology in an elderly cohort hospitalized due to a proximal femur fracture and compare these findings to a control group. We hypothesize that limited medial rotation due to FAI's morphology could increase stresses to the proximal femur, acting as a facilitating mechanism for fractures in this region. Therefore, a higher prevalence of FAI morphology would be present in the study group. METHODS: A retrospective

Prevalence and pattern of lateral impingements in the progressive collapsing foot deformity.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of lateral bony impingements [i.e., Sinus Tarsi (STI), Talo-Fibular (TFI) and Calcaneo-Fibular (CFI)] and their association with Peritalar Subluxation (PTS) have not been clearly established for progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD).This study aims to assess the prevalence of STI, TFI and CFI in PCFD, in addition to their association with PTS. We hypothesized that STI and TFI would be more prevalent than CFI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-two continuous symptomatic PCFD cases were retrospectively reviewed. Weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT) was used

Prevalence of Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax in Lira District, Uganda.

Trypanosomes are the causative agents of animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) and human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), the former affecting domestic animals prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. The main species causing AAT in cattle are T. congolense, T. vivax, and T. b. brucei. Northern Uganda has been politically unstable with no form of vector control in place. The return of displaced inhabitants led to the restocking of cattle from AAT endemic areas. It was thus important to estimate the burden of trypanosomiasis in the region. This study was designed to compare the prevalence of animal Africa

Prevalence and clinical association with calcinosis cutis in early systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Calcinosis cutis is often found with systemic sclerosis (SSc). However the calcinosis cutis and its clinical association among SSc patients is limited. Our aims were to assess the prevalence of calcinosis cutis and its association with clinical features of SSc patients at early onset of the disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional study on clinical characteristics and hand radiographs of 120 newly diagnosed SSc patients with the onset less than four years were evaluated. Calcinosis cutis was described based on the anatomical regions, density (level 1-3) and shapes (net, plate, stone, a

Prevalence of Cardiovascular Complications in Malaria: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Recent studies have suggested that malaria may affect the cardiovascular system. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular complications in symptomatic malaria patients. We searched databases such as Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science (January 1950-April 2020) for studies reporting on cardiovascular complications in adults and children with malaria. Cardiovascular complications were defined as abnormalities in electrocardiogram (ECG), cardiac biomarkers, and echocardiography on admission or during outpatient examination. Stu
