BACKGROUND: Eye health has widespread implications across many aspects of life, ranging from the individual to the societal level. Vision 2020: The Right to Sight is an initiative that was conceptualised in 1997 and launched in 1999. It was led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in response to the increasing prevalence of blindness. Approximately 80% of the causes of blindness were avoidable. Hence, the initiative set out to eliminate the major causes of avoidable blindness. These included cataract, uncorrected refractive

Fatal Case of Legionnaires' Disease After Home Exposure to Legionella pneumophila Serogroup 3 - Wisconsin, 2018.

In January 2018, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health (DPH), received a report of a culture-confirmed case of Legionnaires' disease. The patient, who was immunocompromised, had died at a local hospital 10 days after being admitted. DPH and an infection preventionist from the hospital investigated to determine the source of the infection and prevent additional cases. Because the case was suspected to be nosocomial, health care facility water samples were tested for Legionella. When these samples were negative, water sources in the patient's home were tested. Th

Testing the effectiveness of Family Spirit Strengths (FSS) - a culturally informed intervention designed to prevent mental health and substance misuse for indigenous families through home visiting.

BACKGROUND: Families represent the foundation of health for many Indigenous communities. Yet, Indigenous women, particularly women of the age who are starting families, face profound challenges related to mental health and substance use. These challenges are rooted in historical trauma, ongoing discrimination, systemic racism, and chronic underfunding of mental health and substance use services, and result in significant gaps in access to care. Family-based home visiting has the potential to address multiple types of mental health and substance use concerns in a way that is more accessible and

Burnout and secondary traumatic stress in child protection workers: Untangling the role of personal and work-related factors using meta-analysis.

Child protection workers are at risk of developing burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS). These conditions threaten their well-being and service provision, and may lead to increased turnover rates, which further undermines quality of services. Determining risk and protective factors that may be addressed to prevent STS and burnout is an important step to securing both employees work-related mental health and services for children in need. This meta-analysis examined personal and work-related factors associated with burnout and STS in child protection workers. A systematic search was con

Perceived impacts of Supervised Consumption Sites (SCS) on key service aspects and settings: Reports from Canadian National Questionnaire on Overdose Monitoring (CNQOM).

INTRODUCTION: Supervised Consumption Sites (SCS) are public health interventions aimed to reduce harms associated with illicit substance use. SCS contend with polarization and public scrutiny which hinder its implementation and operation despite robust evidence demonstrating its effectiveness at preventing fatal overdoses. In this study, we examined data from a nationwide survey to explore attitudes of PWUS (individuals with lived or living experiences of substance use), healthcare providers (HCP), and first responders towards SCS. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study reporting data from

Perspectives and Experiences of People Receiving Care on a De-escalation Intervention to Reduce Restrictive Practices in Acute Mental Health Units.

Interventions aimed at reducing restrictive practices are also designed to enhance the service experience in acute mental health units. However, people with experience of coercive engagement with these services are seldom involved as active contributors in evaluative research on interventions to reduce restrictive practices. With the meaningful involvement of lived experience practitioners, this research was aimed at examining care recipients' service experiences and perspectives on nurses' therapeutic responses during the implementation of a de-escalation intervention in three adult inpatient

Characterising differences between self-reported and wastewater-identified drug use at two consecutive years of an Australian music festival.

BACKGROUND: In the context of drug prohibition, potential adulteration and variable purity pose additional health risks for people who use drugs, with these risks often compounded by the outdoor music festival environment. Ahead of the imminent implementation of drug checking services in Queensland, Australia, this study aims to characterise this problem using triangulated survey and wastewater data to understand self-reported and detected drug use among attendees of a multi-day Queensland-based music festival in 2021 and 2022. METHODS: We administered an in-situ survey focusing on drug use a
