Cultural engagement and cognitive reserve: museum attendance and dementia incidence over a 10-year period.

Theories of cognitive reserve, disuse syndrome and stress have suggested that activities that are mentally engaging, enjoyable and socially interactive could be protective against the development of dementia. Using data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, this study shows that for adults aged 50 and older visiting museums every few months or more was associated with a lower incidence rate of dementia over a 10-year follow-up period compared with less-frequent visiting. This association was independent of demographics, socioeconomic status, health-related variables including sensory

Prevalence and correlates of neurological soft signs in healthy controls without family history of any mental disorder: A neurodevelopmental variation rather than a specific risk factor?

OBJECTIVE: Neurological soft signs (NSS) are a group of minor non-localizable neurological abnormalities found more often in patients with schizophrenia and other mental disorders. The aim of the current study was to investigate their prevalence and correlates in healthy controls without family history of any mental disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study sample included 122 normal subjects (66 males and 56 females; aged 32.89 ± 9.91 years old). The assessment included the Neurological Evaluation Scale (NES), and a number of scales assessing the subthreshold symptoms (MADRS, STAI) and funct

Elevated percentage of CD3+T cells and pregnancy outcome in women with recurrent pregnancy loss.

BACKGROUND: Even though the immune factor is not yet established as a cause of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), tons of other studies have shown that a significant proportion of immune abnormalities exist in RPL. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study with 850 women who were diagnosed with RPL. The percentages of CD3+, CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD8+T cells of each participant, detected by flow cytometry, were obtained before pregnancy and at 6 weeks of gestation as part of their routine medical examination. RESULTS: Peripheral blood CD3+ T cells prior to pregnancy (at baseline), increased

For neonatal ECG screening there is no reason to relinquish old Bazett's correction.

AIMS: There is an almost endless controversy regarding the choice of the QT correction formula to be used in electrocardiograms (ECG) in neonates for screening for long QT syndrome (LQTS). We compared the performance of four commonly used formulae and a new formula derived from neonates. METHODS AND RESULTS: From a cohort of 44 596 healthy neonates prospectively studied in Italy between 2001 and 2006, 5000 ECGs including 17 with LQTS-causing mutation identified by genotyping were studied using four QT correction formulae [Bazett's (QTcB), Fridericia's (QTcF), Framingham (QTcL), and Hodges (QT

A Regression Method Based on Noninvasive Clinical Data to Predict the Mechanical Behavior of Ascending Aorta Aneurysmal Tissue.

Goal: Ascending aorta aneurysms represent a severe life-threatening condition associated with asymptomatic risk of rupture. Prediction of aneurysm evolution and rupture is one of the hottest investigation topics in cardiovascular science, and the decision on when and whether to surgically operate is still an open question. We propose an approach for estimating the patient-specific ultimate mechanical properties and stress-stretch characteristics based on noninvasive data. Methods: As for the characteristics, we consider a nonlinear constitutive model of the aortic wall and assume patient-speci

Age estimation using Olze's method in an adult Brazilian population.

OBJECTIVES: Age estimation is important to set an anthropological profile in human remains, as well as in legal issues where the suspect or victim doesn't have documents that prove the real age. The age estimation, in adults, is a challenge, and it can be analyzed through some dental stages. This study aimed to test Olze's method in a Brazilian sample composed by adults, aged between 20 and 70 years old, both sex. METHODS: For experiments, 306 orthopantomography from Brazilian individuals between 20 and 70 years were selected. The dental involution through four different dental parameters wer

Understanding Phlebotomus perniciosus abundance in south-east Spain: assessing the role of environmental and anthropic factors.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniosis is associated with Phlebotomus sand fly vector density, but our knowledge of the environmental framework that regulates highly overdispersed vector abundance distributions is limited. We used a standardized sampling procedure in the bioclimatically diverse Murcia Region in Spain and multilevel regression models for count data to estimate P. perniciosus abundance in relation to environmental and anthropic factors. METHODS: Twenty-five dog and sheep premises were sampled for sand flies using adhesive and light-attraction traps, from late May to early October 2015. Temp

Trajectories of dementia-related cognitive decline in a large mental health records derived patient cohort.

BACKGROUND: Modeling trajectories of decline can help describe the variability in progression of cognitive impairment in dementia. Better characterisation of these trajectories has significant implications for understanding disease progression, trial design and care planning. METHODS: Patients with at least three Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) scores recorded in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Electronic Health Records, UK were selected (N = 3441) to form a retrospective cohort. Trajectories of cognitive decline were identified through latent class growth analysis of

The Impact of Executive Functions and Emotional Intelligence on Iowa Gambling Task Performance: Focus on Right Frontal Lobe Damage.

OBJECTIVE: Decision-making in the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has been intensively studied regarding both the "hot" and "cold" components. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex is a key region involved in processing somatic marker information, though recent findings suggest dorsolateral regions are also important. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is also known as a substrate of executive functions-the cold component of decision-making. However, there is contradictory evidence about the role of executive functions, as well as the hot component of decision-making-emotional intelligence. Previous fin

Probiotic supplementation in preterm infants does not affect the risk of retinopathy of prematurity: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vascular disorder of the developing retina in preterm infants and is a leading cause of childhood blindness. Perinatal infection plays a pathogenic role in ROP. Probiotic supplementation reduces the risk of late onset sepsis (LOS) in preterm infants but it remains to be determined whether this reduction translates into a reduction of other complications. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the possible role of probiotics in altering the risk of ROP. Eleven randomized controlled trials (4250 infants; probiotics: 2121) were include

Are incident gallstones associated to sex-dependent changes with age? A cohort study.

Age and female sex have repeatedly been identified as gallstone determinants but the underlying mechanisms are not clarified. The objectives of this study were to determine if changes with age in physiology, lifestyle, or reproductive hormones were associated with incident gallstones. A cohort study of a general population random sample (N = 2366) aged 30-60 years was performed. Participants were ultrasound screened for gallstones in 1982-84 and again in 1993-94. Lifestyle data and blood samples were obtained and re-analyzed in 2004. Changes with age in physiology (body mass index, blood press

Genetic basis of brain size evolution in cetaceans: insights from adaptive evolution of seven primary microcephaly (MCPH) genes.

BACKGROUND: Cetacean brain size expansion is an enigmatic event in mammalian evolution, yet its genetic basis remains poorly explored. Here, all exons of the seven primary microcephaly (MCPH) genes that play key roles in size regulation during brain development were investigated in representative cetacean lineages. RESULTS: Sequences of MCPH2-7 genes were intact in cetaceans but frameshift mutations and stop codons was identified in MCPH1. Extensive positive selection was identified in four of six intact MCPH genes: WDR62, CDK5RAP2, CEP152, and ASPM. Specially, positive selection at CDK5RAP2
