CB1R, CB2R and TRPV1 expression and modulation in in vivo, animal glaucoma models: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex biological regulatory system. Its expression and functionality have been widely investigated in ocular tissues. Recent data have reported its modulation to be valid in determining an ocular hypotensive and a neuroprotective effect in preclinical animal models of glaucoma. AIM: This study aimed to explore the available literature on cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R), cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2R), and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) expression in the trabecular meshwork (TM), ciliary body (CB), and retina as well as their o

Case report: novel PCDH15 variant causes usher syndrome type 1F with congenital hearing loss and syndromic retinitis pigmentosa.

BACKGROUND: Usher syndrome (USH) is an autosomal recessive disorder primarily responsible for deaf-blindness. Patients with subtype Usher syndrome type 1 (USH1) typically experience congenital sensorineural hearing loss, abnormal vestibular function, and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Here we present a case of Usher syndrome type 1F (USH1F) with a novel homozygous variant in the calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion protocadherin-15 (PCDH15) gene. CASE PRESENTATION: Ophthalmic examinations were evaluated over a course of 10 years and the disease-causing variant was identified by whole exome sequen

Patient-derived cellular models of primary ciliopathies.

Primary ciliopathies are rare inherited disorders caused by structural or functional defects in the primary cilium, a subcellular organelle present on the surface of most cells. Primary ciliopathies show considerable clinical and genetic heterogeneity, with disruption of over 100 genes causing the variable involvement of several organs, including the central nervous system, kidneys, retina, skeleton and liver. Pathogenic variants in one and the same gene may associate with a wide range of ciliopathy phenotypes, supporting the hypothesis that the individual genetic background, with potential ad

The posterior parietal cortex processes visuo-spatial and extra-retinal information for saccadic remapping: A case study.

Optimally collecting information and controlling behaviour require that we constantly scan our visual environment through eye movements. How the dynamic interaction between short-lived retinal images and extra-retinal signals of eye motion results in our subjective experience of visual stability remains a major issue in Cognitive Neuroscience. The present study aimed to assess and determine the nature of the contribution of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) to the saccadic remapping mechanisms which contribute to such perceptual visual constancy. Perceptual responses in transsaccadic visual

Osteopontin accumulates in basal deposits of human eyes with age-related macular degeneration and may serve as a biomarker of aging.

A common clinical phenotype of several neurodegenerative and systemic disorders including Alzheimer's disease and atherosclerosis is the abnormal accumulation of extracellular material, which interferes with routine cellular functions. Similarly, patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss among the aged population, present with extracellular lipid- and protein-filled basal deposits in the back of the eye. While the exact mechanism of growth and formation of these deposits is poorly understood, much has been learned from investigating their compositio

Changes in choroidal and foveal retinal thickness after cataract surgery: Our results.

INTRODUCTION: Cataract surgery is the most common ophthalmic surgical procedure worldwide. In addition, the retina and choroid are the tissues most susceptible to damage during cataract surgery. However, conflicting results have been found about the relationship between choroidal thickness (CT), retinal thickness (RT), and cataract surgery. AIM: To evaluate the changes in CT and foveal retinal thickness (FT) following cataract surgery in standardized conditions. METHODS: Twenty eyes from 20 patients who experienced uneventful cataract surgery and twenty eyes from 20 age- and sex-matched heal

Diagnosis and management of degenerative retinoschisis and related complications.

Degenerative retinoschisis is a common condition characterized by elevation of the inner layers of the peripheral retina. While uncomplicated retinoschisis (i.e., with no associated retinal layer breaks) is almost invariably a benign process, retinal detachment associated with isolated outer layer breaks (termed schisis-detachment) is fairly common. Historically, schisis-detachment has been treated with a variety of interventions, ranging from retinopexy to intraocular surgery. Based on published descriptions of the natural history of the disease, these interventions are likely unnecessary in

Visibility of microvessels in Optical Coherence Tomography angiography depends on angular orientation.

Optical Coherence Tomography angiography (OCTA) is a widespread tool for depth-resolved imaging of chorioretinal vasculature with single microvessel resolution. To improve the clinical interpretation of OCTA, the conditions affecting visualization of microvessels must be defined. Here we inject a scattering plasma tracer (Intralipid) during OCTA imaging of the anesthetized rat eye. In the retina, we find that interlaminar (vertical) vessels that connect laminae have one-fourth to one-third the OCTA red blood cell to tracer (RBC-to-tracer) signal ratio of intralaminar (horizontal) vessels. This

Reverse contrast laser Doppler holography for lower frame rate retinal and choroidal blood flow imaging.

Laser Doppler holography (LDH) is an interferometric blood flow imaging technique based on full-field measurements of the Doppler spectrum. LDH has so far been demonstrated in the retina with ultrafast cameras, typically at 75 kHz. We show here that a similar method can be implemented with camera frame rates 10 times slower than before. Due to energy conservation, low and high frequency local power Doppler signals have opposite variations, and a simple contrast inversion of the low frequency power Doppler reveals fast blood flow beyond the camera detection bandwidth for conventional laser Dopp

Integrated fundal assessment pathway for patients with suspected shunt malfunction via digital retinal images.

Introduction: Papilloedema is an important clinical sign in the assessment of neurosurgical patients presenting with suspected shunt malfunction. Methods: We describe our 18-month experience using a newly acquired nonmydriatic digital retinal camera to acquire fundal photographs for this purpose. Results: It was used to take digital photographs in 67 patients presenting with suspected shunt malfunction and 54% of these images were discussed with the on-call ophthalmology team for advice. Of these 81% had instant input provided by ophthalmology and the remainder were sent to the ophthalmology dep

Retinal stem cells and potential cell transplantation treatments.

The retina, histologically composed of ten delicate layers, is responsible for light perception and relaying electrochemical signals to the secondary neurons and visual cortex. Retinal disease is one of the leading clinical causes of severe vision loss, including age-related macular degeneration, Stargardt's disease, and retinitis pigmentosa. As a result of the discovery of various somatic stem cells, advances in exploring the identities of embryonic stem cells, and the development of induced pluripotent stem cells, cell transplantation treatment for retinal diseases is currently attracting mu

[Optical coherence tomography in multiple sclerosis].

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows the different layers of the retina to be visualised in vivo. One of them is the so-called retinal nervous fibre layer (RNFL), which is made up of amyelinic axons from the ganglionic cells, and therefore part of the central nervous system. Recent studies have begun to examine possible applications of OCT in the field of neurology and, more specifically, the usefulness of measuring the thickness of the RNFL in multiple sclerosis (MS). In both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies it has been shown that a decrea
