Dermatomyositis (DM) is an immune-mediated myopathy characterized by proximal skeletal muscle weakness, muscle inflammation, and distinct skin manifestations. Calcinosis cutis, involving the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the soft tissues, affects approximately 8% of DM patients1 and poses significant treatment challenges. It can complicate with inflammation, ulceration, pain, and local and systemic infections, resulting in considerable morbidity. We present the case of a 69-year-old-woman with dermatomyositis who developed an exuberant form of calcinosis cutis.

The rhinolith is massed in a mineral nugget in the nasal cavity, which is the result of the accumulation of salts around the nidus. The nidus may be endogenous or exogenous. Long-term and unilateral nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, pain and malodor are major complaints. However, sometimes, they may not show any signs for years and maybe detected incidentally during a routine examination. In this study, we present a case of giant rhinolith with headache and nasal obstruction complaints.

An iron-mediated vicinal difunctionalization of enamides and enecarbamates with sulfinic acid salts and alcohols is described. This reaction proceeds under mild conditions and furnishes the oxysulfonylated products in moderate to excellent yields. Moreover, the direct incorporation of sulfur dioxide into the sulfonylated products via organolithium chemistry has been achieved. The formed N-O-acetals are competent acylimine precursors. Their utilization as building blocks for the synthesis of biologically relevant β-amidosulfones is described as well.

We describe a nickel-catalyzed cyanation reaction of aryl (pseudo)halides that employs butyronitrile as a cyanating reagent instead of highly toxic cyanide salts. A dual catalytic cycle merging retro-hydrocyanation and cross-coupling enables the conversion of a broad array of aryl chlorides and aryl/vinyl triflates into their corresponding nitriles. This new reaction provides a strategically distinct approach to the safe preparation of aryl cyanides, which are essential compounds in agrochemistry and medicinal chemistry.

Theoretical calculations at the G4MP2 level of theory demonstrate that it is possible to activate dinitrogen to make it react in dipolar cycloadditions using neutral beryllium derivatives and other neutral metallic compounds. For the particular case of beryllium, the barrier decreases more than 40 kJ·mol-1 with respect to the non-catalysed reaction. The activation achieved is lower than using diazonium salts (models of protonated N2), but still in a range that can be experimentally attainable.

Crystals of a variety of substances including elements, minerals, simple salts, organic molecular crystals, and high polymers forgo long-range translational order by twisting and bending as they grow. These deviations have been observed in crystals ranging in size from nanometers to centimeters. How and why so many materials choose dramatic non-crystallographic distortions is analyzed, with an emphasis on crystal chemistries that give rise to stresses operating either on surfaces of crystallites or within the bulk.

We investigate poly(ethylene imine) and diazonium salts as stable, complementary dopants on graphene. Transport in graphene devices doped with these molecules exhibits asymmetry in electron and hole conductance. The conductance of one carrier is preserved, while the conductance of the other carrier decreases. Simulations based on nonequilibrium Green's function formalism suggest that the origin of this asymmetry is imbalanced carrier injection from the graphene electrodes caused by misalignment of the electrode and channel neutrality points.

The aquaporin protein family performs fundamental tasks in the physiology of several organs in the human body. Their roles in several disorders known to involve water movement make them attractive targets for the development of novel drug therapies.This chapter describes assays commonly used to study the water permeability across AQPs. It also describes the effect of some known inhibitors of aquaporins on water permeability, such as mercury, gold, silver, copper, phloretin, tetraethyl ammonium salts and acetazolamide compounds.

The fate of two trivalent chromium salts (nitrate and chloride) in ISO algal culture medium was followed over 72 h; i.e., the typical duration of algal toxicity tests. Fifty percent of the initial Cr spikes was lost from the solutions by 24 h, with losses up to 90% after 72 h. Monitoring of the temporal variability of Cr(III) concentrations in algal culture media appears necessary to better characterize the toxicity of trivalent chromium to algae.

A 68-year-old woman with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) was treated with oral vitamin D(3). After 2 weeks, new papules developed on the pre-existing plaques. Biopsy specimens of a fresh papule showed more abundant calcium deposition than before therapy. Electron microscopy revealed electron-lucent areas, which suggested unusual mineralization. From these findings, we propose that in patients with PXE, certain cutaneous tissues are highly sensitive to vitamin D(3), resulting in microdeposition of calcium salts.

Very good solvent formation rates were observed when Clostridium beijerinckii NRRL B592 was cultivated on different whole potato media. The increase in whole potato concentration contributed to the increased final solvent concentrations, while the addition of yeast extract or mineral salts gave negative effects. To obtain good solvent productivities and high final solvent concentrations during batch fermentation, no enzymatic hydrolysis of the potato starch was necessary, indicating high activity of the clostridial amylases produced by the strain applied.

Cyanoethylation of a selected group from indole derivatives 1a-i using acrylonitrile in pyridine and potassium hydroxide afforded the corresponding indole-1-propionitrile 2a-h derivatives which readily hydrolysed in basic medium to the corresponding indole-1-propionic acid derivatives 4a-c. A several attempts to cyclize the above products-to the corresponding dihydropyrroloquinolin-4-one derivatives. The indole-1-propionamide derivatives reacted with diethyl carbonate and ethyl acetate under Claisen condensation also, with diazonium salts and nitric acid.

Ursodeoxycholic acid is increasingly used in the treatment of a variety of cholestatic diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis. The present article summarizes current understanding of the mechanism of action of ursodeoxycholic acid in these diseases. Apart from a direct hepatoprotective effect, ursodeoxycholic acid also influences the enterohepatic circulation with decreased ileal reabsorption and increased faecal excretion of potentially hepatotoxic endogenous bile salts. In addition, a cholehepatic shunt mechanism and immune modulating effects may also be important.

The hydrocarbon degradation rate could be doubled by the addition of sophorose lipids as biosurfactants in a model system containing 10% soil and a 1.35% hydrocarbon mixture of tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecene, 1,2,4-trimethylcyclohexane, pristane (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecane) phenyldecane and naphthalene suspended in mineral salts medium. The adaptation phases for two degradation phases were shortened, and the extent of degradation and final biomass were increased. The added biosurfactants were degraded after they had facilitated degradation of all hydrocarbon components.

Na-beta-glycerophosphate was added to the organ culture medium of mice marrow fragments. New bone ground substance is formed, its mineralization degree and morphology being highly dependent upon glycerophosphate addition and removal periods. Complete or partial ground substance mineralization occurs, in last case calcium insoluble salts may be found in young apical or in old basal parts only. Ground substance deposition and mineralization dynamics in vitro is discussed, paying attention to possibility of demineralization process.

The principles governing the use of anti-inflammatory drugs in rheumatology are reviewed. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids, either systemic or local, have a transient effect. On the other hand, treatments with basic medications such as gold salts of D-penicillamine induce prolonged beneficial action. They are, however, useful chiefly in rheumatoid arthritis but not in ankylosing spondylitis or variants, nor in gout or osteoarthrosis. The side effects and contraindications are described and discussed.

A study was undertaken to establish conditions and relationships for the production of lipases during hydrocarbon fermentation. A culture of Candida lipolytica was isolated by a kerosene enrichment technique from oil-soaked soil and this microbe was used to study the production of lipase on a kerosene-mineral salts medium. The optimum pH, medium, and temperature for lipase synthesis were established and the properties of the isolated enzyme in terms of its activity and lipid specificity were studied.

A number of structural alteration in brains of leukemic children have been attributed to intrathecal administration of methotrexate and radiation therapy. We report an instance of asymptomatic encephalopathy in an adult who received thio-TEPA (by subarachnoid injection) as treatment for leukemic meningitis. The lesions were microscopic, confined to cerebral white matter and included: vacuolation, myelin destruction, axonal swelling, gliosis, deposition of mineral salts and aggregates of large foamy cells. The etiology of this condition remains undetermined.

Myxobacters were found to be common inhabitants of the arid soils from the Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, area. Thirteen species of the genera Myxococcus, Archangium, Cystobacter, Stigmatella, Polyangium, and Chondromyces were isolated on a mineral salts agar supplemented with bakers' yeast and filter paper. Greater species diversity per soil sample was found in the region receiving 400 to 800 mm of annual rainfall as compared with soils from an area having only 200 to 400 mm of rainfall.

The authors present the results of studies concerning the choice of nutrient bases and elaboration of a medium for obtaining anthrax protective antigen providing an active preparation. Filtrates of crude cultures obtained on the nutrient medium prepared of 3% hydrochloric hydrolyzate of fish flour, corn extract, glucose, sodium bicarbonate and mineral salts proved to be the most active. Tests for determination of usefulness of the culture fluids with the maximum content in them of the protective antigen are recommended.
