Prevalence and correlates of prescription drug diversion and misuse among people living with HIV in the eThekwini district, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug diversion, and misuse has increased over the past decade and is notably in high-income-countries and significantly contributes to the opioid epidemic. People living with HIV (PLWH) are particularly vulnerable to prescription drug diversion, and misuse as most experience chronic pain, mental health problems and HIV-related illnesses. The researchers investigated the prevalence and correlates of prescription drug diversion, and misuse among PLWH in the eThekwini district, KwaZulu-Natal. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 392 PLWH, conveniently rec

Comparison of the immediate effect of voiced oral high-frequency oscillation and flow phonation with resonance tube in vocally-healthy elderly women.

PURPOSE: To verify and compare the immediate effects of the voiced oral high-frequency oscillation (VOHFO) technique and the phonation into a silicone resonance tube in the elderly self-perception of vocal and laryngeal symptoms and in their voice quality. METHODS: 14 elderly women, over 60 years old, performed the VOHFO and phonation into a resonance tube technique (35cm in length and 9mm in diameter) with one-week interval between both to avoid carry-over effect. Initially, all participants answered questions regarding the frequency and intensity of their vocal/laryngeal symptoms. Recording

Personality Disorder Traits, Trauma, and Risk in Perpetrators of Domestic Violence.

Crimes committed against partners and family members have devastating effects on victims. Unfortunately, recidivism rates for offenders are high, and there is a need to establish risk factors that may be potential treatment targets. This study aimed to investigate childhood maltreatment, symptoms of trauma, and personality disorder (PD) traits in males convicted of domestic violence (DV) offences. Data were extracted from the files of 40 males under the supervision of the probation service in the United Kingdom. Actual return to custody was recorded after a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Is 'subthreshold' bipolar II disorder more difficult to differentiate from borderline personality disorder than formal bipolar II disorder?

Recent research indicates that borderline personality disorder (BPD) can be diagnostically differentiated from the bipolar disorders. However, no studies have attempted to differentiate participants with sub-threshold bipolar disorder or SubT BP (where hypomanic episodes last less than 4 days) from those with a BPD. In this study, participants were assigned a SubT BP, bipolar II disorder (BP II) or BPD diagnosis based on clinical assessment and DSM-IV criteria. Participants completed self-report measures and undertook a clinical interview which collected socio-demographic information, a mood h

Blunted Cortisol Awakening Response and Poor Self-Perceived Health in Informal Caregivers of People with Eating Disorders.

Caring for offspring diagnosed with eating disorders (EDs) entails being under high chronic stress, with negative consequences for health. However, most previous research has only evaluated self-report measures of health, biological markers being poorly studied. In this regard, the evaluation of the cortisol awakening response (CAR) could add significant information about the biological basis of health disturbances in this population. The main aim of the present study was to compare CAR and self-reported health between informal caregivers (ICs) of people with EDs and non-caregivers. Furthermor

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy and the first year postpartum among HIV-positive women in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is associated with HIV disease progression and, during pregnancy, increased mother-to-child transmission risk. In Ukraine, access to combination ART is expanding but data on adherence are scarce. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys of HIV-positive women were conducted i) at delivery (on antenatal ART adherence) and ii) during the first year postpartum (on ART adherence in the preceding four weeks). Factors associated with a score ≤ 11 on the self-report Case Adherence Support Evaluation (CASE) index or ≥ 1 self-reported missed dose were

Parental autonomy support and discrepancies between implicit and explicit sexual identities: dynamics of self-acceptance and defense.

When individuals grow up with autonomy-thwarting parents, they may be prevented from exploring internally endorsed values and identities and as a result shut out aspects of the self perceived to be unacceptable. Given the stigmatization of homosexuality, individuals perceiving low autonomy support from parents may be especially motivated to conceal same-sex sexual attraction, leading to defensive processes such as reaction formation. Four studies tested a model wherein perceived parental autonomy support is associated with lower discrepancies between self-reported sexual orientation and implic

The BIAS-Treatment Scale (BIAS-TS): a measure of the subjective experience of active and passive harm and facilitation.

This article describes the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes-Treatment Scale (BIAS-TS), a self-report measure of experiences of active harm, passive harm, active facilitation, and passive facilitation. The BIAS-TS was derived from the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes (BIAS) Map, and provided reliable, replicable, and stable indexes of different harmful and facilitatory behaviors that people encounter in their day-to-day lives from multiple sources (Studies 1 and 2). The BIAS-TS subscales were uniquely associated with concurrent subjective well-being, and were dis

The role of early maturation, perceived popularity, and rumors in the emergence of internalizing symptoms among adolescent girls.

Despite the widely reported link between early pubertal timing and internalizing symptoms among girls, less is known about the peer reputation of earlier maturing girls. The current study assesses whether early maturation is associated with perceived popularity and/or rumors, and whether these reputational factors help account for earlier maturing girls' vulnerability to emotional distress. Drawing on three waves of data collected from an ethnically diverse sample of middle school girls (n = 912), hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that more advanced development at the start of

Eye-tracking enables reliable pain assessment in intubated SCI patients and is not associated with self-appraisals.

AIMS: To examine whether eye-tracking (ET) enables reliable self-report of pain in intubated patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and to explore associations between pain and psychological self-appraisals. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 75 mechanically ventilated ICU patients (46 SCI, 29 non-SCI) completed pain assessments using a Tobii Dynavox ET device. Pain was measured via the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and the EQ-5D-5L pain dimension. Self-esteem, anxiety, and depression were measured with the Visual Analogue Self-Esteem Scale (VASES). RESULTS: NRS and EQ-5D pain ra

Trends in non-coeliac gluten/wheat sensitivity: a self-managed problem?

INTRODUCTION: Self-reported non-coeliac gluten/wheat sensitivity (NCGWS) is triggered by gluten/wheat ingestion in patients without coeliac disease (CD) or wheat allergy. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, diagnoses of NCGWS appear to have declined. A gluten/wheat-free diet (GFD) remains the only management approach, though long-term adherence and outcomes are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate market trends and the long-term GFD adherence in NCGWS. Secondary objectives included evaluating perceived GFD efficacy and the need for further healthcare advice. METHODS: We analyzed UK market data

Association between childhood emotional abuse and non-suicidal self-injury among Guangxi adolescents in China: A moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Childhood Emotional Abuse (CEA) is a known risk factor for Non Suicidal Self-injury (NSSI), which could have devastating repercussions. This study aimed to establish whether Parent-Child Attachment (PCA) and depressive symptoms mediated the CEA-NSSI relationship, as well as whether school connectedness moderated both the direct and indirect relationships between CEA and NSSI. METHODS: Between November and December 2022, 7447 Chinese adolescents in high schools were surveyed through multi-stage cluster random sampling. The participants completed self-reported questionnaires that as

Measurement invariance of the Perceived Stress Scale across race, sex, and time, and differential impacts on cocaine use treatment outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: To understand the influence of phenotypic characteristics, such as stress, on substance use treatment outcomes, measures must function equivalently across groups to allow for interpretable comparisons of effects. The present study evaluated measurement invariance of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) across race, sex, and time, examined its association with cocaine use disorder (CUD) treatment outcomes, and tested whether associations were moderated by race and/or sex. METHODS: Data from four clinical trials evaluating behavioral and/or pharmacological treatments for cocaine use w
