Spatiotemporal Compliance Control for a Wearable Lower Limb Rehabilitation Robot.

Compliance control is crucial for physical human-robot interaction, which can enhance the safety and comfort of robot-assisted rehabilitation. In this study, we designed a spatiotemporal compliance control strategy for a new self-designed wearable lower limb rehabilitation robot (WLLRR), allowing the users to regulate the spatiotemporal characteristics of their motion. The high-level trajectory planner consists of a trajectory generator, an interaction torque estimator, and a gait speed adaptive regulator, which can provide spatial and temporal compliance for the WLLRR. A radial basis function

Perceptions about chronic health conditions, multimorbidity and self-management practices in rural northeast South Africa: findings from a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic health conditions are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a disproportionately high burden in low-income and middle-income countries. The burden arising from these conditions presents immense challenges to countries with dysfunctional public healthcare systems, such as South Africa. This necessitates patients to have a good understanding of the conditions and optimal self-management approaches. We explored patients' understanding of chronic health conditions and self-management practices, including self-monitoring, in the rural South African comm

Association of Self-reflection With Cognition and Brain Health in Cognitively Unimpaired Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Self-reflection (the active evaluation of ones thoughts, feelings, and behaviors) can confer protection against adverse health outcomes. Its effect on markers sensitive to Alzheimer disease (AD), however, is unknown. The primary objective of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between self-reflection and AD-sensitive markers. METHODS: This study used baseline data from cognitively unimpaired older adults enrolled in the Age-Well clinical trial and older adults with subjective cognitive decline from the SCD-Well clinical trial. In both cohorts,

Self-inflicted burn injuries: Etiologies, risk factors and impact on institutional resources.

INTRODUCTION: Self-inflicted burns are a rare cause of injury, accounting for only 1.0% of burns in the United States. While rare, the physical and psychosocial ramifications of these injuries are lasting. The goal of this study was to examine the etiologies, risk factors and outcomes of self-inflected burns in an urban setting. METHODS: Records of all patients presented to a regional burn center from July 2011 to June 2015 were reviewed. Those who sustained a self-inflected burn were identified and included in this study. Demographic data, psychiatric history, previous self-harm records, ins

Benefits of yoga in the treatment of eating disorders: Results of a randomized controlled trial.

Yoga has begun to be incorporated into the treatment of eating disorders despite limited empirical support for this practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of incorporating Yoga into the treatment of eating disorders. This preliminary randomized controlled trial investigated the benefits of participating in an eight-week Kripalu Yoga program for 53 women with symptoms of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Compared to waitlist controls, Yoga participants experienced decreases in binge eating frequency, emotional regulation difficulties and self-criticism, and

Maladaptive coping in adults who have experienced early parental loss and grief counseling.

This study compares maladaptive coping, measured as substance use, behavioral disengagement, self-blame, and emotional eating, among adults (>18 years) who have experienced early parental loss ( N = 1465 women, N = 331 men) with non-bereaved controls ( N = 515 women, N = 115 men). We also compared bereaved adults who received grief counseling ( N = 822 women, N = 190 men) with bereaved controls who had not ( N = 233 women, N = 66 men). Bereaved adults reported significantly more substance use, behavioral disengagement, and emotional eating than non-bereaved adults. Counseling participants repo

Recognition memory, self-other source memory, and theory-of-mind in children with autism spectrum disorder.

This study investigated semantic and episodic memory in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using a task which assessed recognition and self-other source memory. Children with ASD showed undiminished recognition memory but significantly diminished source memory, relative to age- and verbal ability-matched comparison children. Both children with and without ASD showed an "enactment effect", demonstrating significantly better recognition and source memory for self-performed actions than other-person-performed actions. Within the comparison group, theory-of-mind (ToM) task performance was significant

Kinematic adaptations from self-selected to fast speed walking in patients with adult spinal deformity.

PURPOSE: To investigate kinematic adaptations from self-selected to fast speed walking in ASD patients. METHODS: 115 primary ASD and 66 controls underwent biplanar radiographic X-rays and 3D gait analysis to calculate trunk, segmental spine and lower limb kinematics during self-selected and fast speed walking. Kinematic adaptation was calculated as the difference (Δ) between fast and self-selected speed walking. ASD with 7 or more limited kinematic adaptation parameters were classified as ASD-limited-KA, while those with less than 7 limited kinematic adaptation parameters were classified as A

Associations Between Cognitive Performance and Pain in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Comorbidity with Fibromyalgia Does Matter.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the frequently reported pain complaints, performance-based cognitive capabilities in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with and without comorbid fibromyalgia (FM) are significantly worse than those of healthy controls. In various chronic pain populations, cognitive impairments are known to be related to pain severity. However, to the best of our knowledge, the association between cognitive performance and experimental pain measurements has never been examined in CFS patients. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between cognitive perfor

Dopamine Dysregulation Syndrome in Parkinson's Disease.

This case study examines how patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may develop dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), a condition characterized by the misuse of dopamine replacement therapy through excessive self-directed dosing beyond what is necessary to control motor symptoms. While carbidopa/levodopa remains the mainstay therapy for many adults with PD, some patients may choose Mucuna pruriens, a complementary medicine containing levodopa, to manage their motor symptoms. This case describes a patient with PD who presents with DDS following co-administration of self-directed Mucuna prurien

Therapeutic Targets for Management of Periodontitis and Diabetes.

The increasing incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic periodontitis (CP) worldwide imposes a rethinking of individualized therapy for patients with both conditions. Central to bidirectional links between DM and CP is deregulated systemic inflammation and dysfunctional immune responses to altered-self and non-self. Control of blood glucose levels and metabolic imbalances associated with hyperglycemia in DM, and disruption of pathogenic subgingival biofilms in CP are currently the main therapeutic approaches for these conditions. Mounting evidence suggests the need to integrate immune m

Amelioration of sexual fantasies to sexual abuse cues in an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse: a case study.

Although sexual dysfunction of childhood sexual abuse survivors has received considerable attention, other sexual difficulties experienced by survivors of CSA, such as sexual fantasies to cues of sexual abuse, have received less attention. In this A-B design case study, a young adult female survivor of childhood sexual abuse presented for treatment at a Midwest rape crisis center. After successful treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, she complained of unwanted sexual fantasies to sexual abuse cues and concomitant guilt and shame. Following baseline data collection, treatment consisted

A neural network for recognizing movement patterns during repetitive self-paced movements of the fingers in opposition to the thumb.

A data glove is a typical input device to control a virtual environment. At the same time it measures movements of wrist and fingers. The purposes of this investigation were to assess the ability of BrainMaker, a neural network, to recognize movement patterns during an opposition task that consisted of repetitive self-paced movements of the fingers in opposition to the thumb. The neural network contained 56 inputs, 3 hidden layers of 20 neurons, and one output. The 5th glove '95 (5DT), a commercial glove especially designed for virtual reality games, was used for finger motion capture. The tra
