CBT for difficult-to-treat depression: self-regulation model.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for depression but a significant minority of clients do not complete therapy, do not respond to it, or subsequently relapse. Non-responders, and those at risk of relapse, are more likely to have adverse childhood experiences, early-onset depression, co-morbidities, interpersonal problems and heightened risk. This is a heterogeneous group of clients who are currently difficult to treat. AIM: The aim was to develop a CBT model of depression that will be effective for difficult-to-treat clients who have not responded to st

Prevalence and associated factors of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) in a sample of Brazilian university students.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have long been associated with health risk behaviors, but they are poorly studied in Brazilian university students. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of ACEs and investigate their association with sociodemographic data, health risk factors and self-related health in a sample of university students. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study conducted with 546 students from a Brazilian public university. METHOD: The self-reported 10-ACE Study questionnaire (ACE-Q) and sociodemographic information (age, sex, family income), health ri

Biomechanical characteristics of self-expanding sinus stents during crimping and deployment_A comparison between different biomaterials.

Self-expanding sinus stents are often used in functional endoscopic sinus surgery to treat inflamed sinuses. The PROPEL self-expanding sinus stent offers mechanical support to the sinus cavity to prevent restenosis. The stent is made of a bioabsorbable material (PLGA) that disappears after wound healing. However, complications such as foreign body sensation and severe stent migration/expulsion have been reported after implantation. Little is known about the contact characteristics of self-expanding sinus stents from when the stent is crimped into the insertion device through to deployment into

Effects of isolation housing stress and mouse strain on intravenous cocaine self-administration, sensory stimulus self-administration, and reward preference.

Sensory stimuli are natural rewards in mice and humans. Consequently, preference for a drug reward relative to a sensory reward may be an endophenotype of addiction vulnerability. In this study, we developed a novel behavioral assay to quantify the preference for intravenous drug self-administration relative to sensory stimulus self-administration. We used founder strains of the BXD recombinant inbred mouse panel (C57BL/6J, DBA/2J) and a model of stress (isolation vs enriched housing) to assess genetic and epigenetic effects. Following 10 weeks of differential housing, all mice were tested und

Pathways from Trait Emotional Intelligence to factors of distress in Rosacea: The mediating role of Social Phobia and Self-Esteem.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a skin disease characterized by facial erythema and inflammatory pustules that may result in emotional distress. Social Phobia and Self-Esteem appear to be linked to the development of higher levels of distress in dermatological conditions, while Trait Emotional Intelligence (Trait EI) has been consistently associated with greater levels of adaptation to one's chronic condition. Hence, it seems extremely relevant to observe the interplay between these dimensions in the context of Rosacea. The goal of the current study is to test the hypothesis that an association between

REL-1017 (esmethadone; D-methadone) does not cause reinforcing effect, physical dependence and withdrawal signs in Sprague Dawley rats.

REL-1017 (esmethadone, D-methadone) is the opioid-inactive d-isomer of racemic D,L-methadone. REL-1017 may exert antidepressant effects via uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) channel block. As REL-1017 is expected to exert central nervous system activity, full characterization of its abuse potential is warranted. We evaluated lack of reinforcing effect, physical dependence, and withdrawal of REL-1017 in Sprague Dawley rats. (1) Self-administration Study Rats were trained to self-administer oxycodone intravenously (IV) and then were subjected to 3-day substitution tests where s

Parental and Child Diagnosis Storytelling and Self-Image in French Children With Cleft lip With or Without Cleft Palate.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial adjustment can be challenging for children with cleft lip with or without a cleft palate (CL ± P). Previous studies have linked social integration with self-acceptance and highlighted the impact of the parents' stress on self-acceptance. Teasing can be linked to children having difficulties explaining their diagnosis to others. This prospective research aimed to gain a better understanding of family communication about cleft, children's oral storytelling about their cleft, and explore their self-image and perceived familial acceptance. PARTICIPANTS: Parents and their c

Variability in eating disorder risk and diagnosis in transgender and gender diverse college students.

PURPOSE: To examine differences in elevated eating disorder risk and self-reported eating disorder diagnosis across subgroups of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) college students. METHODS: Data from 5057 TGD college students participating in the national Healthy Minds Study between 2014 and 2019 were analyzed. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses examined heterogeneity in prevalence and odds of elevated eating disorder risk, as measured by the SCOFF, and self-reported eating disorder diagnosis by gender, as well as by intersecting gender and sexual orientation identities. How intoxicated are you? Investigating self and observer intoxication ratings in relation to blood alcohol concentration.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to accurately detect alcohol intoxication is an important skill for people who use these substances and for a variety of professions (e.g. policing, responsible service of alcohol). Previous studies have found that intoxicated people are generally poor at estimating their own intoxication (particularly at high blood alcohol concentration; BAC) and the relationship between perceived intoxication and BAC appears to flatten at higher BAC levels. Studies of observer ratings of other's intoxication have yielded mixed results. The aim of this study was to investigate both s

The mental and physical health profile of people who died by suicide: findings from the Suicide Support and Information System.

PURPOSE: There is limited research on the associations between factors relating to mental and physical health in people who died by suicide. METHODS: Consecutive suicide cases were included in a psychological autopsy study as part of the Suicide Support and Information System in southern Ireland. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis were used to examine factors associated with recorded presence or absence of mental and physical health problems. RESULTS: The total sample comprised 307 suicide cases, the majority being male (80.1%). Sixty-five percent had a history of self-harm an

[Participation in self-help groups: impact on self-management and knowledge].

BACKGROUND: Self-help groups (SHGs) are an inherent part of patient involvement and play an important role in the healthcare system. Until now, however, there has been a lack of systematic investigations and quantitative data about the individual impact of self-help for patients and relatives. OBJECTIVES: This study presents the results of a comparison between members of SHGs and non-members. Thereby, the effects of self-help shall be described in terms of empowerment and self-management. The study is part of the project "Health-related Collective Self-Help in Germany" (Gesundheitsbezogene Se

Depressive Symptoms Are Associated with Self-Reported Physical Limitations That Are Activity Dependent in a Cross-Sectional Analysis of Subjects with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

One in four patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has depression. However, the effect of depressive symptoms on self-reported physical function among patients with COPD is not fully defined. We tested the hypothesis that depressive symptoms among patients with COPD are associated with increased self-reporting of physical limitations in a nationally representative sample of adults living in the USA. We sampled 775 adults with obstructive lung disease and history of regular smoking from 2007 to 2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariable log

Impact of a negative emotional antitobacco mass media campaign on French smokers: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mass media campaigns to encourage smoking cessation have been shown to be effective in a context of comprehensive tobacco control programme. The effectiveness of antismoking ads that evoke negative emotions remains unclear, in particular in countries with high smoking prevalence and among smokers with low perceived susceptibility, low self-efficacy or who are not users of smoking cessation services. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate short-term and long-term effects of a 1-month French national highly emotional media campaign, with a focus on these specific targets. DESIGN: A 6-month longitu

Training future clinicians: An interprofessional approach to treating tobacco use and dependence.

The high prevalence of smoking among persons with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders has not changed in the past decade despite a decline in smoking among the general population. Interprofessional collaborative care offers clinicians the opportunity to engage their patients in tobacco cessation treatment that is coordinated and comprehensive. Investigators applied a 1-group, pre/post-test design with qualitative and quantitative descriptive analyses to estimate the impact of an interprofessional tobacco education program on perceived self-efficacy and self-reported counsel

The effect of childhood emotional maltreatment on romantic relationships in young adulthood: A double mediation model involving self-criticism and attachment.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing recognition of the importance of childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) on the development of psychopathology, very few studies have addressed its impact on adult romantic relationship functioning, particularly among otherwise relatively well-functioning individuals. In an attempt to further elucidate the mechanism underlying the negative impact of CEM on romantic relationships, we tested an integrative mediational model linking CEM to romantic relationships through the impact of CEM on the development of self-criticism and adult attachment. Diabetes self-management education is not associated with a reduction in long-term diabetes complications: an effectiveness study in an elderly population.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The efficacy of diabetes self-management education on glycaemic control, self-care behaviour and knowledge has been established by short-term studies in experimental settings. The objective of this study was to assess its effectiveness to improve quality of care and reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications in unselected older patients with recently diagnosed diabetes in routine clinical care. METHODS: Using population-level health care administrative databases and registries, all patients aged ≥66 years in Ontario, Canada with diabetes for <5 years w

Eating disorders and sense of self: a learning theory conceptualization.

The learning theory view of sense of self is that problems in one's knowledge about the self arise when: (1) caregivers fail to recognize indicators of a child's private emotional and visceral experiences and (2) subsequently fail to offer appropriate labels that discriminate among those experiences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of the process believed to build a sense of self to level of interoceptive awareness (IA) and to risk for eating disorders. One hundred twenty seven undergraduate and graduate students (112 women) completed the Eating Disorders Inventory-3

Reliability of self-reported tobacco use in bipolar disorder: an exploratory study of euthymic patients visiting a tertiary care hospital in India.

BACKGROUND: Unlike schizophrenia, only a little attention has been paid to tobacco dependence in patients with bipolar disorder despite a similarly high prevalence and predisposition to health risks. The euthymic phase is especially suitable for tobacco screening by the treating psychiatrist. However, the validity of self-report for tobacco use in this patient population remains undetermined. AIM: The current study aims to assess the validity of self-reported tobacco use in euthymic bipolar disorder. METHOD: The psychiatric out-patients with DSM-IV TR diagnosis of bipolar type-I in remission
