The Fobi-Pouch operation (FPO) for obesity is the product of clinical trials, more than 15 years of personal clinical experience and information gathered from publications, scientific meetings, and personal communications with other bariatric surgeons. Aerosil A-300 and GF/F (GF/C) filters were used for purifying plasmid DNA and intact RNA as well as for the recovery of DNA fractionated on agarose gels. In the presence of guanidinium thiocyanate Aerosil A-300 and GF/F (GF/C) filters selectively bind nucleic acids, while proteins, agarose polysaccharides and salts are washed off. Nucleic acids desorbed from the Aerosil and filters are available immediately as substrates: DNA for restriction analysis, ligation and sequencing; RNA--for RT-PCR.

Seven newborn infants (birth weight 920 to 1,900 g) who developed pulmonary oedema as a complication of the use of percutaneous silastic central venous catheters are described. Clinical symptoms occurred three to forty days after catheter placement. In each case, radiographic detection, performed by the injection of radiopaque dye, localized the tip of the catheter in the pulmonary artery or in its collateral branches. Clinical symptoms decreased after catheter replacement in the right atrium. The casistic examination allows the Authors to suggest some aetiopathogenetic hypothesis.

A method is described for the determination of inorganic tin in biological samples by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS). A sample is extracted with ethyl acetate after addition of HCl and NaCl. The concentrated extract is passed through a silica gel column. The column is washed with ethanol, water, and 0.2N HCl successively, and then inorganic tin is eluted with 2N HCl and measured by HG-AAS. Recoveries from fish muscle spiked with 0.1 micrograms/g Sn4+ are 78.9 +/- 4.2% (average +/- standard deviation, n = 5). The detection limit is 0.01 micrograms/g as Sn.

A review of the first 100 and the last 100 patients in a series of 268 patients sterilized by hysteroscopic injection of liquid silicone into the fallopian was made to evaluate the success rate as it relates to experience with the procedure. The two groups were similar in composition. While the percentage of patients sterilized increased only from 91% in the first 100 patients to 94% in the last 100 patients the numbers that were sterilized at the time of the first procedure increased by 9%. A topical cosmetic cream has been developed for use on patients occupationally sensitized to chromate. With the components of this preparation, an in vitro study was carried out, which demonstrated the efficiency of each component. An in vivo experiment on 25 volunteer patients proved a failure. The formula was modified to produce a new cream. The in vitro and in vivo experiences showed satisfactory results in 60 volunteer patients, 60% of whom benefitted from using it.

A technique is described for simultaneous insertion through a single inframammary incision of a custom-made prosthesis for pectus excavatum and a unilateral subpectoral breast prosthesis. This was performed under ketamine, diazepam, and local infiltration anesthesia in an office operating room suite. The technique can also be used for pectus excavatum alone or with bilateral augmentation mammaplasties.
