Allometry, the proportional scaling of log trait size with log body size, evolves to optimize allocation to growth of separate structures and is a major constraint on the functional limits of animal traits. While there are many studies demonstrating the rigidity of allometry across traits and taxa, comparatively less work has been done on allometric variation across environments within species. Rapidly changing environments, such as cities, may be prime systems for studying the flexibility of allometry because they uniquely alter many environmental parameters (e.g., habitat, light, noise). Spontaneous intracranial hypotension typically results from spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, often at spine level and only rarely from skull base. Once considered rare, it is now diagnosed far more commonly than before and is recognized as an important cause of headaches. CSF leak leads to loss of CSF volume. Considering that the skull is a rigid noncollapsible container, loss of CSF volume is typically compensated by subdural fluid collections and by increase in intracranial venous blood which, in turn, causes pachymeningeal thickening, enlarged pituitary, and engorgement of cerebr

OBJECTIVE: Review the clinical features of occipital condyle syndrome.
BACKGROUND: Occipital condyle syndrome consists of unilateral occipital region pain associated with ipsilateral 12th cranial nerve paresis. It is typically due to metastasis to the skull base and is underdiagnosed.
DESIGN: We report a retrospective case series of 11 patients (8 men, 3 women), aged 32 to 72 years.
RESULTS: Eleven cases of occipital condyle syndrome were identified. All patients complained of severe occipital region pain. In addition, 2 patients complained of ipsilateral ear or mastoid pain, 2 noted associ

A 51-year-old house woman visited the Department of Neurosurgery, Osaka University Hospital for examination of the head injury on Oct. 7, 1975. Neurological examination was normal. Endocrinological examination showed galactorrhea. The patient had a past history of premature menopause. Plain skull films revealed enlargement of sella turcica and CT scan showed sellar tumor with suprasellar expansion which was enhanced by contrast medium. The serum prolactin (PRL) level was 3,290 ng/ml. Diagnosis of PRL secreting pituitary adenoma (prolactinoma) was made. Though surgical removal of the tumor was

Sclerosteosis is one of the rare, potentially lethal, autosomal recessive, progressive, craniotubular sclerosing bone dysplasias. Syndactyly of the second and third or other fingers is evident at birth. Hyperostosis and sclerosis are most prominent in the skull and tubular bones, and are frequently associated with excessive height and weight. The typical facial deformity is apparent by the age of 5 years. The changes involving the temporal bone include a marked increase in overall dimensions, extreme sclerosis, and narrowing and constriction of the external ear canal, middle ear cleft, interna

BACKGROUND: Nasal deformity is an abnormality in the appearance of the nose due to either congenital defect or trauma. In traumatic cases, patients often present with combined functional and cosmetic complaints. Therefore, otolaryngologists take into account both breathing and aesthetic nasal issues.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the changes in the nasal dorsum and base; compare breathing and aesthetic satisfaction scores between two approaches to lateral nasal osteotomy: low-to-low and low-to-high.
DESIGN: Comparative observational; data gathered retrospectively and prospectively.

This is a retrospective case review of all 163 adults to have received multichannel cochlear implants on the Manchester University/Manchester Royal Infirmary programme between 1988 and 1998. The aims were to investigate the incidence of unwanted non-auditory effects of electrical stimulation (NAS) of the cochlea, and to try to identify any factors that seemed to be related to these effects. The effectiveness of programming strategies in eliminating unwanted effects was also studied. Most of the devices were Nucleus CI 22M or CI 24M. The remainder were Med-el Combi 40 or Combi 40+. NAS occurred

PURPOSE: Black Bone (BB) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a nonionizing imaging method and a recent alternative to computed tomography (CT) in the examination of cranial deformities. The purpose of this study was to compare BB-MRI and routine 3D-CT in the preoperative evaluation of patients with craniosynostosis.
METHODS: At our center, we have routinely performed preoperative CT of the skull and brain MRI for patients with clinical suspicion of craniosynostosis. We recently changed our MRI protocol into one that includes sequences for the evaluation of both brain anatomy and skull bone an

PURPOSE: Ionising radiation exposure is especially harmful to brain development. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether black-bone (BB) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a non-ionising imaging method, offers an alternative to ionising imaging methods such as computed tomography (CT) in the examination of cranial deformities.
METHODS: From 2012 to 2014, a total of 408 children were referred to the Craniofacial Centre at the Helsinki University Hospital for further examination due to flatness of the posterior skull. Fifteen of these patients required further diagnostic imaging. To av

The cranial and hyobranchial muscles of the Triassic temnospondyl Gerrothorax have been reconstructed based on direct evidence (spatial limitations, ossified muscle insertion sites on skull, mandible, and hyobranchium) and on phylogenetic reasoning (with extant basal actinopterygians and caudates as bracketing taxa). The skeletal and soft-anatomical data allow the reconstruction of the feeding strike of this bottom-dwelling, aquatic temnospondyl. The orientation of the muscle scars on the postglenoid area of the mandible indicates that the depressor mandibulae was indeed used for lowering the

HEMA-Lactate-Dextran cryogel scaffolds were produced by cryogelation. Mesencyhmal stem cells (MSC) were isolated from rat bone marrow. Critical sized cranial bone defects were created in rat cranium. Stem cells were injected inside the macropores of the cryogel scaffolds prepared from HEMA-Lactate-Dextran possessing the same dimensions with the defect and placed in the cranial bone. The cryogels placed in the defect without stem cells served as control. After selected time intervals the experimental sites were removed from the animals and new bone formation and tissue integration were investig

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral approach is one of the main routes for accessing suprachiasmatic lesions involving the anterior communicating artery (AComA) complex. Pterional (PT) craniotomy and its alternatives, including orbitozygomatic, orbitopterional, and mini-supraorbital craniotomies, have been developed as tailored frontotemporal craniotomies. One of the main differences between PT craniotomy and its alternatives is the removal of the orbital bone along with the sphenoid wing. However, which bone part is the most important to remove has not been discussed in relation to frontal lobe ret

Evaluation of the relapse in patients with craniofacial malformation who underwent craniofacial advancement surgery is very difficult, and data are often unreliable. This is because common skeletal landmarks move from their original position, making standard cephalometries completely useless. To solve this problem, some authors proposed evaluations based on 2- and 3-dimensional computed tomographies, but the biologic risk and the economic outcome do not consent to repeat this kind of examination too often. In this paper, the authors propose a new cephalometric model based on the evaluation of

This paper reports a cephalometric analysis of the craniofacial morphology in infants with unoperated unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCCLP) and unoperated unilateral incomplete cleft lip (UICL). The purpose of the study was to determine the nature and extent of the craniofacial deviations in UCCLP as compared to the morphology in UICL, which has previously been shown to be close to normal. The samples comprised 82 infants with UCCLP (58 males and 24 females) and 75 with UICL (48 males and 27 females). The mean age was about 2 months in both groups. The cephalometric analysis of cran

INTRODUCTION: The overarching objective of the Office of Naval Research sponsored Blast Load Assessment Sense and Test (BLAST) program was to quantify neurofunctional risk from repeated blast exposure. However, human studies have limitations in data collection that can only be addressed by animal models. To utilize a large animal model in this work, researchers developed an approach for scaling blast exposure data from animal to human-equivalent loading. For this study, energy interacting with the brain tissue was selected as a translation metric because of the hypothesized association between
