PURPOSE: While quantitative studies have documented the prevalence and correlates of fear of disease progression (FoP) among patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), little is known about how these patients subjectively experience, cognitively process, and emotionally respond to the threat of disease progression in their daily lives. This phenomenological study aims to explore the multidimensional psychological experiences of FoP in MHD patients, thereby providing a basis for developing targeted nursing interventions.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study employed a phenomenological qualitative

BACKGROUND: From the perspective of behavioural psychology and adolescent psychopathology, non-suicidal self-harm (NSSI) among adolescents is a multidetermined behaviour shaped by biological, psychological and social factors. Digital mental health interventions are vital for adolescent self-harm support, yet their acceptance among self-harming adolescents is low with significant avoidance tendencies. Existing research focuses on technical attributes of these tools but rarely explores the psychological motivations and contextual factors driving avoidance in this group, and few studies interpret

AIM: To use network analysis to explore the relationships among distress, symptom burden, social support, and digital health literacy in older patients with gastric cancer following surgery.
BACKGROUND: Digital healthcare is gaining increasing prominence and represents a promising approach to improving long-term care and psychological support for older postoperative patients with gastric cancer. However, this population frequently experiences high distress, heavy symptom burden, limited social support, and low DHL, which together constitute major barriers to the effective use of digital healt

Online behavioral weight management programs offer a scalable solution to address overweight and obesity but often face high dropout rates and variable success. Understanding the barriers and facilitators experienced by participants who achieve weight loss targets versus those who do not is critical for optimizing programs. This study compared the barriers and facilitators reported by participants achieving ≥5% weight loss with those achieving <5%, using a social-ecological framework to capture influences across individual, interpersonal, and environmental levels. The framework was chosen to r

Assumptions about autistic sociality have shaped dominant understandings of friendship, often positioning autistic relationships as fragile, shallow, or inherently lacking. These framings stand in contrast to autistic people's own accounts of friendship as meaningful, sustaining, and deeply valued. This qualitative study explored autistic perspectives on friendship through joint, semistructured interviews with 11 friendship dyads (22 participants), including 20 autistic young adults and their self-identified friends (autistic or nonautistic). Dyadic interviews supported the coconstruction of r

OBJECTIVE: This study examined stigma experiences among children and adolescents with Long COVID, a chronic condition marked by persistent symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. We sought to characterize the nature, prevalence, and impacts of stigma on affected youth using a mixed-methods approach.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 58 caregivers of children seen at a pediatric post-COVID clinic, including the PROMIS® Parent Proxy Global Health 7 + 2 measure and nine adapted items from the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Inventory. Additionally, 18 parents participa

PURPOSE: Alopecia is a medical dermatology condition resulting in multiple psychosocial negative consequences in identity and appearence. Despite numerous qualitative studies examining the experience of people with alopecia, a comprehensive synthesis is lacking. This can obscure progress in research and minimize the impact of psychosocial support people with alopecia can receive. This systematic meta-synthesis aimed to critically integrate the existing literature to enhance psychological understanding of how people with alopecia manage issues about identity and appearance changes, and provide

PURPOSE: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder with complex etiology and high recurrence rates, often leading to substantial impairment in patients' quality of life (QoL). Within the biopsychosocial (BPS) framework, multiple biological, psychological, and social factors interact to influence QoL. Cognitive dysfunction is common in epilepsy and may play a critical role in this process. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of cognitive function in the relationship between BPS factors and QoL in patients with epilepsy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 252 patients with epilep

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a progressive musculoskeletal disorder linked to physical disability, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality in older adults. While malnutrition is a well-established risk factor, understanding the behavioral (i.e., individual choices and habits) and social determinants of sarcopenia is crucial for designing effective public health strategies. This study investigates the associations between physical activity, sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, and risk of sarcopenia in older adults living in Ceará, northeast Brazil.
METHODOLOGY: This cross-section

Parental labour migration, of either one or both parents, has been associated with various challenges among left-behind children (LBC). However, there is a limited understanding of the LBC's own views and experiences of social and mental well-being and how the new daily life circumstances they encounter following their parents' migration impact them. This study aimed to understand the influence of parental migration and its aftermath on the social and mental well-being of adolescents (referred to as LBC) in two rural districts in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative design, data were collected t

PURPOSE: Adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries (tBPI) are devastating physically and emotionally. In addition to the physical loss of function and pervasive neuropathic pain, patients describe difficulty with negative self-image and social relationships. Our goal was to gain an initial understanding of body image and satisfaction with appearance among tBPI patients.
METHODS: Among 126 patients in a prospective cohort study, 60 completed a brachial plexus injury-specific modification of the Satisfaction with Appearance survey. The survey encompasses three major domains: social discomfort be

BACKGROUND: Pragmatic language, or the use of language in social contexts, is a critical skill in daily life, supporting social interactions and the development of meaningful social relationships. Pragmatic language is universally impacted in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and pragmatic deficits are also common in other neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly those related to ASD, such as fragile X syndrome (FXS). This study used a multi-method, longitudinal approach to characterize potentially unique pragmatic profiles across different neurodevelopmental disabilities, and across contexts

(1) Background: With the term Virtual reality (VR) we refer to a three-dimensional environment generated by the computer, in which subjects interact with the environment as if they were really inside it. The most used VR tools are the so-called HMD (head-mounted display) which make it possible to achieve what theorists define "direct mediated action". The aim of our systematic review is specifically to investigate the applications of virtual reality therapy for the treatment of social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia. The most common treatment for social anxiety disorder is repres

Drug use involves social interactions. Therefore, norms in the proximal environment of people who inject drugs (PWID) can favor behaviors that may result in HIV transmission. This work aimed at studying drug injection-related norms and their potential association with risky behaviors among PWID in Athens, Greece, in the context of economic recession and political activism that followed the fiscal crisis and soon after a recent HIV outbreak had leveled off. The Transmission Reduction Intervention Project (TRIP) was a social network-based approach (June 2013 to July 2015) that involved two group

BACKGROUND: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD), also known as dyspraxia, is a disorder emerging in childhood characterised by motor skill impairments. The motor difficulties often produce negative effects in other areas of life, such as poor self-esteem and reduced social interactions. One treatment used for DCD is fascia Bowen therapy, which involves stimulating the fascia tissues of the body using finger and thumb rolling movements over the skin to improve overall muscle movement. However, no studies to date have been reported testing the effectiveness of fascia Bowen in DCD.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia, the diminished ability to experience pleasure, is an important dimensional entity linked to depression, schizophrenia, and other emotional disorders, but its origins and mechanisms are poorly understood. We have previously identified anhedonia, manifest as decreased sucrose preference and social play, in adolescent male rats that experienced chronic early-life adversity/stress (CES). Here we probed the molecular, cellular, and circuit processes underlying CES-induced anhedonia and tested them mechanistically.
METHODS: We examined functional brain circuits and neuronal p

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities-more than a billion people worldwide-are frequently excluded from social and political life, and often experience stigmatising attitudes and behaviours from people without disabilities. This stigma, coupled with inaccessible environments and systems and institutional barriers (e.g., lack of inclusive legislation), may result in discrimination against people with disabilities (and their families) to the degree that they are not able to enjoy their rights on an equal basis with others.
OBJECTIVES: This review examines the effectiveness of interventions for i
