Utilizing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in Schools: Staff Trainings to Help Students Manage Emotions and Build Resiliency.

BACKGROUND: Schools are well positioned to address the growing youth mental health crisis by addressing students' social and emotional well-being through regular, consistent and caring connections. However, teachers often report a lack of information on how to address student mental health in the classroom. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) focuses on helping individuals understand and manage intense emotions. "Utilizing DBT Skills in Schools" (UDSS) is a virtual training program supporting the integration of DBT into daily classroom activities. CONTRIBUTIONS TO PRACTICE: The UDSS curricul

Tracing the Historical Roots of Health Inequity Among People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in the United States: Impact of Models, Advocacy, Legislation, and International Context.

The history of inequity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the United States is a compelling story of social perceptions of disabilities, advocacy, legislation, and international influences. Although my focus here is on health inequities, the contributing factors equally influenced where people with IDD lived, worked, and recreated. This article provides a public health perspective for viewing intertwining advances in models of disability, the power of family and self-advocacy, and US legislation to create infrastructures for community-based training, services

Explaining the Link Between PTSD and Suicide: A Meta-Analysis to Introduce the CEASE Framework.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is a well-known risk-factor for suicidal ideation and attempts, but there have been few attempts to systematically evaluate correlates of this association. Using purported mechanisms of the development of suicidal thoughts and behaviors across nine theories as a guide, a series of meta-analyses (K = 191 studies, N = 79,106) were conducted. Posttraumatic stress disorder had a moderate association with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Defeat and entrapment had large associations with both posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Hopelessnes

Perceptions and knowledge of diabetes in poor urban communities in Accra, Ghana.

Diabetes is a major public health concern, leading to costly and life-threating complications while significantly impacting quality of life. However, limited evidence exists on how diabetes is understood in poor urban communities in Africa, including Ghana. Evidence suggests that community beliefs about disease can shape health outcomes and influence intervention strategies. This cross-sectional qualitative study assessed perceptions and knowledge of diabetes in two poor urban communities in Accra, Ghana. Thirteen focus group discussions were conducted, involving ninety-four participants segme

Distancing and discrediting among persons with an acquired spinal cord injury.

This study examines how individuals with acquired spinal cord injury maintain, contest, and dissolve boundaries within their peer community, with a particular focus on the roles of distancing and discrediting others. Carrying out a 26-month ethnography generated data from participant observation, interviews, social media, crowdfunding initiatives, news stories, government policies, reports, and related research. Drawing on theories of symbolic boundaries and stigmas, we theorised how the comparative context influences how individuals can be included or excluded from peer groups. We found that

Severity of acne vulgaris predicts maladaptive psychosocial perceptions and neuropsychiatric disorders: a case-control study.

Acne vulgaris can negatively impact a patient's quality of life. This study evaluated the psychological and interpersonal perceptions of patients who had received acne treatment. Using data from the National Institutes of Health's All of Us Research Program, we analyzed survey responses from 1,843 participants treated with systemic therapies for acne (reflecting more severe disease) and 1,843 matched participants treated with topical therapies alone. Outcomes included surveys assessing both mental and social health and the prevalence of neuropsychiatric conditions between groups. Compared with

Children and divorce: A rapid review targeting cognitive dissonance, in the context of narrative therapy.

Today, for divorcing parents, the social norms of "good" parenting appear to impose obligations to "fight" for shared custody of their children. However, this may intensify conflicts experienced by their children in the form of cognitive dissonance. Authors conducted a rapid review to explore children's experiences of divorce (ages three to 12 years old) in the context of narrative therapy, in order to uncover the mechanism of cognitive dissonance. Four databases of Scopus, PsychINFO, Family and Societies Studies Worldwide, and PubMed were searched for literature in the last 10 years. Results

The Billie project: A story completion study of young people's views on citizenship for persons in mental health recovery.

This study explores young people's perceptions of citizenship and recovery for individuals with severe mental health challenges using the story completion method. In this qualitative approach, participants were invited to complete an open-ended story stem about a fictional character, Billie, whose journey of recovery unfolds through their narratives. We analyzed 47 stories, with lengths ranging from 65 to 598 words (M = 253 words), applying both horizontal (thematic) and vertical (narrative progression) analyses. The findings reveal that participants often framed Billie's recovery in terms of

Why science must speak differently.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the complexities surrounding public trust in science, particularly in the context of overwhelming data and political polarization. The call to “trust the science” emerged as both a symbol of confidence and a source of public tension, exposing the challenges in communicating scientific uncertainty, data interpretation, and expertise. This paper examines the critical role of communication in shaping public perceptions of science, emphasizing the need for epistemic humility and transparency in the face of uncertainty. While data availability increased, the real c

Who pays for carbon dioxide removal? Public perceptions of risk and fairness of enhanced rock weathering in the UK.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is increasingly recognised as necessary to achieve net zero emissions. Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a novel CDR approach with large mitigation potential. With undefined social and environmental costs, and evolving economic and governance systems, ERW raises issues for public acceptance. A literature gap exists regarding how local communities view the possibility of at-scale deployment in their area. We address this with data from five UK public workshops to identify conditions under which communities potentially impacted by ERW consider deployment fair and acc

COVID-19 and the biopolitics of stigma in public housing: dividing practices and community boundaries in pandemic times.

The COVID-19 'hard lockdowns' in Melbourne, Australia in 2020 targeted public housing estates thus trading on perceptions of risk associated with public housing as some of the most stigmatised sites in post-industrial cities. This article draws on interviews with Melbourne public housing tenants on their experience of COVID-19 lockdowns to analyse the place of stigma in residents' accounts. Pairing Wacquant et al's (2014) concept of 'territorial stigma' with sociological work on the biopolitics of stigma we consider the dynamics of stigma, tracing how it functions to delimit community boundari
